Ohhh Jerry. You're already screwed cap and then you go and do this. Please stay who you are forever.

Quote:
Cowboys K Dan Bailey's six-year extension is worth $22.5 million, with $7.5 million guaranteed.
Only in Jerry's World. More cap strapped than any team in football, the Cowboys will likely have to convert salaries into prorated "signing" bonuses elsewhere on the roster to fit Bailey's head-scratching new deal into their already in-the-red finances. Bailey gets a $4.5 million signing bonus and $3.4 million per year in new money. We don't have any problem with Bailey -- he's 26 and one of the top placekickers in the game -- but the Cowboys' contractual dealings are annually the most preposterous in football. Maybe they'll bulk up Bailey and get him to double at defensive tackle. Dallas is currently nearly $22 million over the cap.

I don't know why people pay kickers. The kicking game has become so easy. 11 kickers (12 if you round up Gould) made over 90% of their field goals. 17 of the top 20 kickers in all-time percentage are active kickers. Just sign a couple of undrafted free agent guys, let them compete, and when his contract runs out, if you can't sign him for super cheap, start the process over again.

Can a team operate over the cap (sign FAs to let's say $130 or $140 mil) during free agency? If they know their June 1st cuts will get them under?

This is right. Not to mention he was a 5th round pick who started 120 games in a row from day 1 including years where the Giants had a top 3 OL. Hell of a career.

I'd only pay for guys who make clutch kicks. Going from Cundiff to Tucker is a huge difference. I agree with not wasting good draft picks but it is worth it to keep good kickers around.

Bailey's worth it. You don't let a guy like that go. His couple million in salary is pretty much negligible and can be renegotiated regularly.

I'm pretty sure the answer to this is no. Every team has to be under the NFL salary cap once the new league year starts. I dont think that any team has ever been over when the new league year has started.

Pro football is the most popular sport in America for at least the 30th straight year.

That's according to a survey taken this month by the Harris Poll, which has been asking adult fans, ages 18 and over, about their favorite sport since 1985.

In 2014, 35 percent of fans call the NFL their favorite sport, followed by Major League Baseball (14 percent), college football (11 percent), auto racing (7 percent), the NBA (6 percent), the NHL (5 percent) and college basketball (3 percent).

In 1985, the first year the poll was taken, the NFL beat MLB by just one percentage point (24 to 23 percent), but since then interest in baseball has fallen while the NFL has experienced a huge rise in popularity.

Nine percent fewer fans call baseball their favorite sport over the 30-year span, the biggest drop of any sport. The polling numbers suggest that the sport hasn't been able to recover from a popularity standpoint from 1994, when a strike forced the cancellation of the World Series.

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/...on-on-cap.html

The NFLPA has an option to boost the cap by 2 million this year. Cap was at 128m in 2009, expected to be 126m this year.

Before the new CBA the cap was jumping by 7 to 12 million a year...

Did you really think it's going to jump by a minimum of 7 mill every year? That not sustainable and it's not like the players are forced to get a second job if it only increases by $2 mill.

Not sure why Cassel is going to void his contract... Where else does he have a chance to start or make more money? Jax?

that would be hilarious to see him void his (pretty nice) deal to seek a starting job...

CBS will air Thursday Night Football in Weeks 1-8. NFLN will take over in Weeks 9-16. The agreement is for 2014 only, but could be extended later.
