I feel pretty confident giving a final evaluation on Manziel at this point assuming nothing crazy happens between now and the draft. I've watched 10 full games of him from this season and focused on plays that required NFL QB skills which basically means I ignored the WR screens and designed runs.

First of all anybody questioning his arm talent is crazy. His arm strength is above the baseline for NFL QBs and he shows the ability to drive the ball on throws down the field. His accuracy, particularly on deep passes, is exceptional. In terms of arm talent I think he's similar to Tony Romo although his accuracy can be a little too inconsistent at times when his mechanics get sloppy.

I'm not even sure it's worth talking about his escapability at this point as everybody is aware of it. It's going to continue to be a weapon in the NFL.

Probably his best trait is his ability to create plays outside the pocket. He has a natural instinct for creating something out of nothing and he'll continue to put pressure on defenses in the NFL with his ability to threaten with both his arm and legs when outside the pocket.

As for negatives I feel he still needs work on his mechanics. He made huge strides in this area this season but he doesn't have the elite arm strength like Kaepernick, Stafford, and Cutler to get away with sloppy mechanics. When he doesn't have his feet set he has a noticeable drop in velocity and when you're velocity isn't elite to begin with this can cause problems. His accuracy also suffers when his mechanics get sloppy and I've seen him throw more than a few wayward passes because of this. If he can continue to solidify his mechanics he profiles as a guy capable of carving up a defense with his arm.

My biggest concern with Manziel at this point is his ability to operate efficiently from the pocket. He's made huge strides in this department between last season and this season but there's still work to be done. I feel that he can be slow going through his progressions and at times makes bad reads. I also feel he's still too eager to get out of the pocket when he feels pressure instead of looking to step up and make a play from the pocket.

Lastly I feel his decision making can be questionable at times. He has a habit of trying to do too much with the ball and, while people will point out his bad defense as the reasoning, the fact is that INTs will be costly to a team whether it has a bad defense or not. He needs to learn when to take the easy pass instead of trying to make a play that isn't there.

Overall I came away very impressed with Manziel and moved him up my board accordingly after this long session of scouting. I have him solidly at #2 in my QB rankings at this point. I still have Bridgewater comfortably ahead of him as he's way too polished and I don't really have any question marks about him. I have Manziel pretty far ahead of the rest of the QBs though and, assuming his character concerns and size aren't problems, I have no problem with a team taking him in the top 5.

I think he's going to have some struggles as a rookie. I'd like to see him run a rather simplistic offense early on, similar to RG3, that won't force him to make many complex reads that I feel he's not ready for at this point. His combination of less than ideal mechanics, less than elite arm strength, and aggressive decision making have me thinking he's going to throw quite a few INTs in his first year. With that said he's shown an ability to improve quickly and his early struggles will be countered by some truly amazing plays that get people excited about his long term projection.

I still feel his best comparison is a more athletic young Tony Romo.

Anyone hear he's not throwing at the A&M pro day? Is that true? Is he throwing on his own private day or is he just not throwing at all?

Yep. Good read. Here's the whole thing: http://www.houstonchronicle.com/spor...e2acba496f0#/0

My favorite part of it is that he's daring the Texans to pass on him, but is supremely confident that if they don't take him, the Jaguars DEFINITELY will lol.

I don't know if he's wrong, either.

Good read. It's still a tough call for Houston. For most of the season, I had Manziel going #1 to whichever team landed the pick. Hard to pass on a guy like Clowney, but if you're willing to, Manziel is the obvious choice (to me). I'm still very high on Bridgewater, and I don't think he'd be a bad pick, but Manziel is special.

Saying Johnny Manziel lacked confidence would be worse than a lie, but I'd like to hear a bit more humility from a soon to be rookie QB in the NFL.

The Browns are in the same situation they were in two seasons ago. To guarantee they get either Manziel/Bridgewater, they're going to have to trade up to #2 to get him. I just hope Cleveland doesn't allow themselves to get yanked for three first round picks like the Skins were.

Damn the Rams are going to be set up in a big way with all these present and future high round picks.

Exceptionable analysis, really well put, couldn't have said it better myself. IMO, you've become one of the best posters on this site.

I love Manziel and think he has a bright future but unfortunately, what he said doesn't always happen. Vince Young got passed over by Houston and pretty well said the same thing and look how that turned out.

Some people just get turned off by supreme confidence, that's why Newton had so many haters and where is Carolina now, first place team last I looked. I think Manziel has that potential if he can stay healthy. That's the only question mark for me.

Going to be interested in seeing him throw in his private workout this week. Mainly looking for arm strength and an ability to make all the throws.

I am only comparing them in the sense that some people get turned off by their personalities, they are nothing alike as QB's. Some people thought that Newton's character would lead to failure at the next level and I hear the same thing about Manziel.

I loved Newton's personality and I love Manziel personality, they both have strong leadership capabilities and mental toughness.

The only knock I have on Manziel is whether he can stay healthy, it is the same questions I had about Kaep, RG111 and Wilson. If he can stay healthy, I think he will be special.

It is my opinion that the only thing working against Manziel as the #1 overall pick is his style of play. Lot's of GM's have a picture in their minds of successful franchise QB's and Manziel just doesn't fit that image and they won't take him high, but I'm convinced if his Pro Day is successful, that some GM will fall in love with him and take the risk, at what pick, I have no idea.

Sorry, if you thought I was comparing Manziel to Newton as a QB.

I'd venture a guess that there will be a camera or two there.

Haven't heard of anything specific, but I'd guess both NFL Network and ESPN will show most of it live.

It would be nice to see a third round talent get less exposure.

To me it's less ridiculous than the amount of coverage Michael Sam gets as a 5th round DE/OLB tweener.

At least he's the first openly gay player, but with the attention he gets I'd never draft him. He is an extremely borderline NFL prospect with his very limited athleticism, but if I cut him, I am a bigot who only cut him because of his sexuality, literally not worth the headache and media circus.

Manziel is the same way, for his actual talent level (not the severe over hyping of his actual talent level) he too is not worth the media circus and constant headaches as to why he's not playing.

LOL. He's allowed not to like a prospect.

If people on this board didn't have strong opinions about players, this board would suck balls.
