Quinn had similar question marks coming to the NFL and he turned out to be great so it may turnout to be nothing in Clowney's case but Quinn didn't get drafted near the top of the draft.
Are you thinking of Coples? Never had that take on Quinn (though I did have Aldon Smith as the better pass rusher of the two - looking like there is no wrong answer between those two).

I think Clowney had massive impacts on games. And in the NFL, teams won't be able to give him that much attention - unless the team that drafts him has no other pass rushers. For Houston, example, he'll see a lot of 1-on-1's. Teams aren't going to single Watt to double a rookie on a regular basis - even if it is Clowney.

When he is healthy, Smith may still turnout to be the better pass rusher or at least Quinn's equal.

Of course, if Clowney gets on a team with a superb pass rusher on the other side, he'll face less double and triple teams. It would be scary for QB's but still doesn't completely answer the question of why only 3 sacks this past season unless he was taking plays off which was my real point. Most NFL stars at DE don't have the luxury of a Watt on the other side and they still register 10+ sacks a season after being double and triple teamed.
