I'm currently working in an athletics communication office at a Division I University. My official title is a Digital Media Specialist.. fancy way of saying I work on graphics for the website and social media outlets. I'm also the main contact for Baseball, Tennis, Cross Country and I oversee on Swimming.

Next week I'll be in Richmond, Va. for the Atlantic 10 Championship for women's basketball and then the week after that I'll be in Brooklyn for the A-10 men's basketball championship.

How is Richmond? My wife has a chance for a promotion in Richmond and I started looking for jobs up there. I'm sure it's better than Huntsville but I don't want to go through the process of a job search and moving if it's a crappy place.

I have no clue to be honest. This will be my first year traveling to Richmond so I will let you know!

Well Alexandria is pretty terrible itself. I have a good number of friends in Richmond so I've visited 10 or so times. I've always had fun. I prefer NOVA/DC for living. Richmond is much cheaper though.

A couple of days ago, a radio program covered the topic of job interviews and weird questions that interviewers ask. One caller said that he was asked to name five thing that he is NOT. Here's how I would have answered that question. I am not:

a Satanist
a 19th Century Russian czar
a native of Jupiter's moon Io
a tree
a Toyota Cambry

I would then be thrown out of the interviewer's office immediately.

I hate those kind of questions. They're so useless. And the answers for them are generally fake as hell anyway. I hate that.

It's re-tarded. I hate "lateral" thinking interview questions. I had one douchebag a few weeks ago try to jump from disparate topics every other sentence to play "gotcha" with me.

If you want to play gotcha with me, have a nice day, I'm not working with you, you ******* douchebag. I should have ended the interview then, but did so in a followup email. They were surprised that I rejected extending the process.

The more I look back in it, the more angry I get. I work with people that do that in interviews (tricky, sometimes advanced programming questions) and I hate that they do it. It's some ******* geek ego ******** that has little to do with the real world.

I determined that I'm not going to work with people like that again.

The worst phone screen I ever had was with a gigantic douchebag who asked me to describe my work experience, and as I was going over it, he'd interrupt in the middle of my sentences and say "yeah I don't care about that" "don't care about that" and kept doing it. Then he was like tell me about your experience at company X.

And I was so infuriated at that point bc of how rude and unprofessional he was I just told him I don't think it's gonna work out and good luck with his search and ended the convo.

Who does that? If you don't care why ask me? And worse, why interrupt me to tell me you don't care?

I'd never work for that guy so I figure why waste time. Ended the phone screen right then and there.

if anyone ever wants a job in PR, or even my job, just let me know, it's amazingly stressful, every day I wake up in a panic over something or another, and in general I'm happy to collect a recruitment bonus.

I think I would have answered the "I am not," question with a very combine-esque answer and said something like, "I don't like to focus on those types of things. I like to focus on what I am, and I can tell you what I am..."

etc.

I think maybe some people do stuff like that to feel superior over someone else. It's an adult and slightly refined version of bullying, but still bullying. I want nothing to do with somebody like that, either professionally or personally.

Yeah, I got the impression that this guy was a power hungry jerk. It's not like I'm fresh out of college, I'm not some young boy you're talking down to. I would never work for someone like that. It took everything in my power not to curse him out honestly.

He just seemed very bitter for some reason. Angry and bitter. He kept trying to get company sensitive information out of me about our clients and I refused to give it to him, and he was very angry about that.

it was yesterday, but whatever: richmond is ******* awful. there's no chance i'd ever, ever live there. it's still the only place i ever felt nervous being out after dark. maybe the suburbs are less horrific, but the downtown area near VCU was absolutely terrible. i'd not only decline a trip back, i'd sincerely rethink my employment if pressed.

I co-run an on-site office for a temporary agency. I handle all recruiting and placement. I also do payroll, the majority of write-ups/disciplinary actions, and firings.

I do the same thing every week. Mondays I load up on candidates for interviews at unemployment offices twice a week, one day in between to catch up with on-site supervisor stuff, then Friday is orientation/drug screen/placement day for incoming workers.

Then I'm on call for whenever my associates get hurt or do something stupid... we have a 350% turnover rate out of a program of 150-230 people... I think I've employed half of my county...seriously. Factory life is rough, the pay is too low.

Anyone have an interview with a search firm/recruiting company prior to interviewing with the actual company? I submitted my resume to a company and the search firm (who I assume represents them) contacted me within a few hours wanting to schedule an interview (at the search firm).

It's probably normal, but i just haven't done it before so it feels unusual.

Yeah, I've met with a headhunter prior to them putting my resume out there.

Perfectly normal. They want to know you so they can push for certain jobs that you will fit best in. Both the ones I went to were pretty casual affairs where they just ask the standard "what are you looking for" type questions. These are the guys to ask what you are worth as well as they should have a very good idea based on resume/experience and be able to tell you what you are worth and if they can't they might not be the one to go for!

I'm a certified recruiter for one. If you get direct hired then the company probably gets around 30% of your yearly salary upfront and the recruiter gets a percentage of that. If it's a temp to hire then it's more spread out.

You represent them and the capabilities of the recruiter. He'll interview you to learn your 'sizzle' attributes so he can better market your abilities to clients. You'll get a higher paying job and he'll get a better cut.
