Yahoo Answers is the place for HW questions, tons of nerds on there just desperate to show how smart they are. Seriously, I got lost in some intro to higher mathematics class (proofs) and Yahoo Answers saved me.

2x + 3 = 17
.....-3....-3
......X.....14
......2.....2
X = 7
5x + 3 = 18
.....-3....-3
......X....15
......5.....5
X = 3
3x + 8 = 50
......-8...-8
......X.....42
......3......3
X = 14
Them are right, right?
I haven't took math in 3 years, I think I'm doing it right.....

One number is twice another. Their sum is 120. Find the numbers.. I know the answer is 40 and 80, but i dont know how to show my work. I hate the beginning of the year, because your rusty on everything.

In math and physics, it always help to break down what you have and analyze from there.

So we have X and 2X.
We can now say that X + 2X = 120.
X + 2X = 120
=> 3X = 120
=> X = 40.
Thus, the numbers are 40 and 80.
