Ernie “Fats” Holmes, one of the anchors of Pittsburgh's "Steel Curtain" defense, has died in a car crash. He was 59.
Dan Rooney says:
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and untimely death of Ernie Holmes," said Dan Rooney. "Ernie was one of the toughest players to ever wear a Steelers uniform. He was a key member of our famous Steel Curtain defense, and many people who played against him considered Ernie almost impossible to block. At his best, he was an intimidating player who even the toughest of opponents did not want to play against.
the legendary Steelers of the "Steel Curtain" , the best D ever....the best team ever.....continue to leave us. this is sad for me because they are the reason i am a Steelers fan. i was born during their run and thats all i grew up hearing was my dad talking about the Steelers. talking about the 70's Steelers and the "Steel Curtain" with my dad was my best memories growing up. my dad's favorite player is Terry Bradshaw, mine is Jack Lambert. if i remember right is someone on her related to Jack Lambert, anyway i came home from the hospital in a Jack Lambert jersey, so to see these guys leaving us makes me sad.
