Default Olindo Mare chooses Seattle

The Broncos and Seahawks took a gamble when they let kickers Jason Elam and Josh Brown escape in free agency, so it was only fitting that they would be competing for the same veteran.

On Thursday, after offers were exchanged between the two teams and agent Drew Rosenhaus, Olindo Mare accepted a two-year, $3.5 million deal from the Seahawks. The 34-year-old veteran will be the replacement for Brown, who had been the Seahawks' franchise player a year ago.

Mare visited the Broncos on Tuesday and flew to Seattle Wednesday. The Broncos were the first team to offer, but the Seahawks won the negotiation.

The 12-year veteran has made 79.7 percent of his field goals during his career. He spent his first 11 years in Miami and was one of the best kickers in football.

In 2000 and 2001, he made more than 90 percent of his field-goal attempts. The past two seasons, though, he has struggled. He made 72.2 percent of his field goals in Miami in 2006 and was released. He was traded to the Saints in 2007 and he made 10 of 17 field goals in 13 games. The Saints released him this offseason.

With Mare accepting the deal, the Seahawks are not pressured to draft a kicker in April.
