The problem is that those guys are decent candidates at best and they're headlining the list. Whipple doesn't have much big-time experience outside of D1-AA. Long is experienced, but couldn't develop Kevin O'Connell who's physically gifted and talented. SDSU has 2 good QBs a couple years ago and didn't produce much.

You have to take SDS stuff with a grain of salt for Chuck Long. When he was at Oklahoma and had top talent like he will at Miami, he was able to average 50 pionts a game and win Assitant coach of the year award. He is a big time OC. Just not a great HC.

Think Norv Turner.

Long would be a great choice.

I wouldn't be upset with that choice, but looking through his history there are flags and reasons for concern. Why did he develop Josh Heupel well (no talent) but struggle with O'Connell (3rd round pick to the Pats)?

I'd be interested to see his effect on recruiting considering he was once a top NFL draft pick and successful college QB.

1st, your making KevIn O'Connell sound like this super prospect. Many thought he was a reach in the 3rd and more of a 4th or 5th rounder and he sucked bad since getting to the Pats. So its not like hes this great talent that wasnt developed properly.

2nd, theres a limit to what u can do at SDSU. There isnt the recruiting base so u dont have access to all the players u need. That limits some of the packages u can run and also limits some of the throws the QB can make because the WRs either cant get open quickly enough or they drop balls.

Big difference the at a Miami or Oklahoma that have guys that can make big catches in tight places, and know how to get open.

Dont put too much stock into his SDSU time.

here's how i rank that list in terms of want -

1. Shula
2. Whipple
3. Gunter Brewer
4. Chuck Long
5. Curtis Johnson
6. Scelfo
7. Rip
8. Mazzone

Big drop off after the top 2 though IMO.

My red flags with Long are

1. The OU fans did not like him or his system and were very happy to see him go
2. He took over for Mike Leech which definitely helped him a ton as far as numbers
3. Why was his offense (they ranked 72nd in the nation in total yards) so awful his last year at OU? Was Rhett Bhomar that bad or did the Big 12 just catch up to his system?

Isnt it about time we lock this thing and start the new 09 Canes thread?

This one is pretty long and cluttered.

Be nice to start fresh instead of having a thread full of Nix.

Meh, we've had this one for the last 2 years, we're already the only team with our own thread, prefer it if there wasn't one for each season.

I'll change the title though. :p

It doesn't make sense...that's all. Heupel and White have ZOMG success at OU and suck in the NFL. O'Connell goes to a mid-major school with a big arm and great athleticism....and struggles. What went wrong? Call me a pessimist, but a great QB coach should be able to work wonders with an O'Connell, especially if he can mold a Heupel/White.

Then again, Jacory is nothing like Kevin O'Connell.

Also, save the talk about him "struggling" as a rookie coming from SDSU....cut him some slack.

Snippet from the new BB article on CaneSport.

Quote:
For one, Brown's confidante - Brian Butler - says "there is a very low chance" that the five-star tailback signs anywhere on Signing Day.

"That's because of the time it will take to evaluate," Butler said. "Miami doesn't have an offensive coordinator right now.

"Everything in the schedule (to sign) is built around when they hire an offensive coordinator. Things will be built around that."

And Butler also say Brown is waiting to see where certain offensive linemen sign before making a decision.

"Offensive line recruiting is very important to Bryce," Butler said. "He's mentioned Marcus Hall, Morgan Moses as well as Bobby Massie. He's really paying attention to those three as well as a couple of more Miami is recruiting. That along with the offensive coordinator are the two things he's really looking at."

Butler says, assuming Miami's new coordinator hits it off with Brown, that he will remain with Miami. Butler says Brown still considers himself a UM commitment.

"If they hire a top-notch offensive coordinator that really fits in with Bryce (he'll be at Miami)," Butler said.

Something else Butler and Brown have decided upon - because Butler says they have been inundated with phone calls from media outlets, Brown is setting up his own website.

A link to Brown's page will be posted on Butler's home page - www.potentialplayers.com - by the end of the day on Thursday.

"Bryce is going to start updating on the website," Butler said. "He'll give schools he's considering and give everyone a weekly update on visits and all the little things.

"We want to make it as efficient as possible so we don't have to take 50 phone calls. So now everyone can get all the information they need and want. Bryce is going to personally update it on a weekly basis at the least. He doesn't have school anymore so he can update it and people can hear it straight from him."
The weird gets weirder....

Joey, are you still confident he'll be a Cane in the end? I'm starting to get a little nervous now.

Wow, is this what Canes football has come to? Mazzone on a short list of OC's...wow. That's just sad.

And what does NCSU winning anything have to do with you guys considering an OC that CHUCK FRICKIN' AMATO fired? I was just commenting on the absurdity of the "great" miami hurricanes even considering such a person for the job. Get over yourself.

Like I said, if all you have come to do is trash the OC candidates we are looking at them stop trolling and leave our thread.

Your not a Miami fan, therefore unless your input has some intelligence (the phase LMMFAO isn't intelligent) and thought to it, then leave.

When the 1st thing you do is come to a Miami thread and say "What has Miami come too?" then you aren't being productive. You are just causing trouble, so get out.

let me ask you this bruh, is there any sort of "time table" Miami has on hiring a new OC and if it isn't before signing day, you think it could affect some decisions of the recruits you guys recruiting?

Okay, well how about this....

If you hire Mazzone, I'll look forward to watching every team in the ACC stomp your ass while Mazzone ruins the future of MANY promising athletes. Since I pull for a team that has hired Mazzone in the past, I'd figure you'd be "intelligent" enough to ask me my opinion on the guy.

No doubt though, the best thing for the ACC as a whole is to have Miami as a football power...Mazzone is not the way to get there.

No doubt though, the best thing for the ACC as a whole is to have Miami as a football power...Mazzone is not the way to get there.
I dont need to be intelligent enough to ask you about Mazzone because I'm intelligent enough to fund out already that we are not offering him the job. If u had real interest in discussng that, you would have seen that I already posted that he isnt an option. But u have no interest in that because for the 3rd straight post you bash us.

This is my last respone to you. Take the bashing elsewhere.

They are hoping to have it done within the next 10-14 days before everyone comes on visits.

However, that is not a hard time frame and can be extended if they havent found the guy they want.

Shouldnt effect recruiting alot. Bryce and Rueben Randle are really the only 2 it has a big impact for and Bryce is gonna wait around to see who we get because he wants to be here.

So really its not a huge deal. If we take long, our class basically goes as planned. If it happens within 2 weeks theres a chance we can steal Rueben Randle and/or Bobby Massie and have icing on the cake.

Getting a good OC hire is more important that any recruit.

But Im not stressing it. We will get a good Pro-Style guy and Ryce will be here. If we can find a way to pull another top prospect on top of that, then its just extra but not expect so it isnt really hurting our recruiting.

I personally hope we go with Scherer. Although that new candidate from Boise sounds intriguing as well.

Default I love the Canes but

I dont see them doing much better than this past season. I think their defense should be better and I really think that this could be the season that snaps the Miami, Fla streak of atleast 1 player from their school to be drafted in the 1st round of a draft in very many years..

Apparently Scherer is a fallback plan.

Hes ok but not my top choice.

I do like the Boise State guy (I think his name is Pease)

I personally would put them in this order

1.) 1 of Mike Shula, Chud, Koetter (all said they arent interested)
2.) Chuck Long
3.) Pease the Boise State guy
4.) Scherer

But I get the feeling they are waiting on someone specific that hasnt come avialable yet.

Steve Logan from BC would be an outstanding hire, plus he has ties to Shannon's mentor, Jimmy Johnson. I'd love to see this happen someway somehow.

Well obviously Chud would be the top choice, but he isn't in the running anymore, that's why I didn't mention him. Out of the realistic options, I'd say Scherer and Pease would be my top 2.
