I don't usually follow them too closely, and I always get confused when the Best Film doesn't win Best British Film when it is, in fact, a British Film. But I like that they gave awards to Murray and Mulligan, and I hope Oldman picks one up.

Argh it looks like The Artist is gonna steamroll everything at the BAFTAs. Good movie, but come on.

I need to get up to date with all the award type movies. I've been very slack this year.

That's because in movies it's been a very slack year.

Yeah I think I said something along those lines a few dozen pages back. There have been movies I have really enjoyed like Warrior and Moneyball, but I haven't really watched anything that I consider Oscar caliber yet.

Yeah I wasn't blown away by the majority of movies that got nominated this year. With that being said I don't have alot to complain about with the amount of amazing movies coming out this year.

I'm going to go see Episode 1 in an hour or so. Can't pass up Star Wars. I don't care how *** Jar Jar is, the podracing and Maul scenes are going to be insane. I don't even care if it ends up being crappy 3d, I'll take it on the big screen. I'll watch it 5 times if it means that they'll re-re-release Empire Strikes Back in theaters.

**** you guys for shelling out the cash to pay for more BS Lucas puts out. For shame on both of you. Just wait, in another five years it will be re-released in 3-D with extra CG again and then again in another five years....so on and so forth. Just stop.

No it hasnt. Oscar best picture nominees dont represent anything other than the Academy's opinion, it doesnt mean that those are actually the best movies out.
Thats not to say that some of the nominees arent good though. The Artist is very enjoyable, and The Descendants is fantastic. Hugo is, by all accounts, amazing as well.
But go watch stuff like Margin Call, Take Shelter, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Certified Copy, etc, and tell me this is a bad year.
Then throw in 'bigger' movies like Potter 8 and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which were both tremendous, and Ghost Protocol as well (havent seen it but have heard nothing but good things), and this is an oddly great year for blockbusters in terms of quality.
Id also mention Dragon Tattoo because I absolutely loved it and thought it was better than the Swedish one in absolutely every aspect, but you didnt care for it, so yeah.
Point is, I dont think 2011 was/is bad at all. Quite good, in fact.

My Week with Marilyn was pretty whatever. Outside of somehow preventing the screen from combusting from cuteness when Williams and Watson were both on screen, its main success is in Williams' performance. I think she'd deserve it more for Blue Valentine last year, but I'm hoping she takes Best Actress. Because **** Streep.

I'm pretty sure that at this point in her career, if Meryl Streep wants to, she can put on a Nazi uniform and read the phone book for 2 hours and STILL win the Oscar if she puts together a proper campaign.

Theres almost zero chance that the oscar doesnt go to either Streep or Viola Davis.

Even after that I'd still consider this a 'bad' year for movies. I went to the cinema once this year and honestly didn't want to go and pay to see any other movie. Not a whole lot really peaked my interest this year unfortunately. Now I'm still going to catch up on a lot of these movies in the near future so my opinion could change, but I'm not optimistic of that happening.

The production value for Episode I is very nice.

I almost always agree with the Chicago Film Critics Association awards. They know what's up.

that would be very avant garde of her. of course she'd win an oscar for that!

Yeah, I thought 2011 was very solid in terms of films. The Artist, Midnight in Paris, the superhero films, comedies, and Dragon Tattoo I thought in particular were good to name a few. I think I went to the movies more this year than I have in the past few years. 2012 is going to be an AMAZING year for movies though. I'm gonna go broke paying $10 a ticket for all these good movies this year.
