The problem with John Carter is there is just nothing about it that reaches out and says, "Come watch me."
Not the actors, not the premise, not the title of the movie, not the marketing. Nothing at all. It's just... there.

How John Carter, which actually looks like a decently entertaining movie, cost 250 million to make is beyond me. It's a movie I will probably never pay to watch, and will wait until it's on HBO or something.

It actually DOES have a pretty decent cast with Taylor Kitsch (he was solid in FNL and has talent), Mark Strong, Thomas Haden Church, Willem Dafoe, Bryan Cranston, Dominic West, and random appearances from Jon Favreau/David Schwimmer.

Damn, I didn't know they spent so little on these two, and they are both movies that I thought had great special effects that didn't distract from the movie. District 9 had to use effects for the aliens and the technology but it wasn't just to look cool. It actually helped drive the story instead.

They did a horrible job of marketing John Carter. You see an action-adventure scifi epic and you don't expect the title to be "John Carter." They should have pushed the E.R. Burroughs angle more - science fiction pioneer author of Tarzan etc. It's probably not a bad movie, but with how they marketed it I'm not surprised it bombed.

I'm a huge FNL fan and I actually like Taylor Kitsch as an actor (along with alot of the cast) and I still think it's looks like a terrible, generic, piece of trash sci fi epic that I can see any Saturday on late night TV and forget immediately after I've watched it. I have no incentive to actually pay money for it, and the retards in charge of studios should ******* know better by this point.

And I didnt know any of that until you posted it.
Why?
Because the trailers and hype for it were such garbage I had no desire to check the cast.
And most of them are CGI aliens arent they?

Great point. There is honestly no draw to me. Everything looks like something I could have imagined. Nothing unique about it. They might lose $100 mil or more on this movie according to this one article I read.
They only thing I do like is yelling JOHN CARTER like the Terminator. It sounds the same as Connor.

I watched The Dark Crystal. Haven't seen that in years. It still holds up very nicely from a production value standpoint.

I went and saw This Means War (wasn't my pick for movie night) and it was actually pretty good. I there was more action than I thought there would be and it was actually pretty funny. I would recommend it as a solid popcorn movie.

Exactly what I want to see. Knowing that they are using live live ammunition is cool also. I'm not going to see an action movie to have things like plot get in the way.

Cache's alright, a little underwhelming on the whole. Cronos is better. Have not seen the other two.

Yeah, Funny Games is an all-time great but I really felt disappointed with White Ribbon (aesthetically stunning, but disappointing.)

I can grasp the "underwhelming" feeling, however I thought it was fantastic.
Without using spoilers I'll say this...
Creates an uncomfortable tone which fits with the storyline, and it wasn't a tremendously predictable story arc which is good. The negatives were the dryness of pace and lack of obvious resolution, but those can be redeeming to some.
