The book was Ardil-22 which is the Portuguese version of Catch-22. So I'm assuming that book belonged to the woman from the plane/helicopter because she looked Portuguese. She had that picture probably to identify Desmond.

I think this woman Naomi probably is working for Penny in some way. Penny is obviously loaded. And that red light seems to be a homing beacon where she can be traced.

The picture on the monk's desk was, as has been said before, of him and the white haired woman, meaning they're both in on pushing Desmond to his fate or calling, or whatever. Also, Penny's dad had the picture of the polar bear in his office which tells me he is in on it as well. What this tells me is that either Desmond is the most important character on the island or that the other 815ers also had "others" pushing them in the right direction. Either way, there is a ton of "others" involved in this that we haven't seen yet because they're scattered across the world.

Nah, Mr. Widmore isn't a part of this. That polar bear picture was one of a hundred things that Desmond "noticed" that had connections to the island. They may very well have not been real. Just the island playing tricks with him.

Desmond wouldve married Penny if not for Mr. Widmore. So you're saying that the one episode with Desmond's flashback was all fake, or what?

Desmond would have married Penny if not for Ms. Hawking, the old woman who sold Desmond the ring and told him he wasn't "supposed to" marry Penny because he had to end up on the island. Desmond was gonna marry Penny despite what Mr. Widmore said.
Coincidentally, that same old woman was in the photo with the head monk last night.
Re-watch "Flashes Before Your Eyes" . . . the first Desmond flashback from this season.

So if Ms. Hawking was real then the polar bear picture and whiskey were also real, even though it was a flashback. It was the second time Desmond had gone through that because the 1st time he hadn't tried to buy the ring. He knew what was going to happen because he had already been there. The first time through he left Penny because of Mr. Widmore.

The whiskey was real. Desmond didn't encounter the whiskey until after he had his flashback visions on the island (after the hatch blew). Everything else from the polar bear to the song from the hatch playing on the jukebox that was seen in his flashback is likely a result of the alternate events that occured the second time he "lived" through this experience. Since Desmond didn't meet Ms. Hawking the first time around because he didn't go to buy the ring, she is not the only thing that changed. All of the "signs" that Desmond noticed in connection to the island only were there the second time around when he mey Ms. Hawking. Or at least that is how I see it.
Mr. Widmore is connected to the island, but I don't think he played any role in getting Desmond to go to the island, or at least not a direct/intentional role.
I am fairly confident that Mr. Widmore's company may have been the one that built tha hatches on the island. This is why Penny knew to look for an electro-magnetic anomaly when searching for Desmond. This is speculation on my part, but it sure makes sense.
Also, the cable running from the water to the jungle is what supplied the power to the underwater beacon that signaled the submarine, as Ben stated previously. Since the hatch blew, it is no longer functioning, meaning the island cannot be found in the previous manner.
Desmond's flashbacks are without a doubt the most complicated.

The Widmore Company is tightly associated with the Hanso Foundation who started the Dharma Intiative. A bunch of things on the island were manufactured by Widmore. Including pregnancy tests just to name one.

Just wanted to point this out as evidence that time does not work quite the same on the island as it does elsewhere . . . there are a lot of theories about time loops, and separate parallel timelines on the island. Check this out:
Scroll down the page a little over half-way and look at the entry from March 30th entitled "Those Crazy Clocks"
http://losteastereggs.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2007-04-12T05%3A30%3A00%2B01%3A00&max-results=20
Obviously that clock was very deliberatly altered as they shot that scene. Nothing gets placed in a scene on accident. The producers compose every scene and location very carefully.

The food drop had the Widmore name on it too.

The fact that the clock went back to 12:35 really make me think that is just a continuity error. They happen all the time in TV and Movies.

How do you know that Mr. Widmore didn't drink the whiskey the 1st time through? And the polar bear and the song could've been there the 1st time but he wouldn't have noticed becuase they would be insignificant.
How can you not think Mr. Widmore is in on the whole island thing? He has a polar bear picture on his wall, the whiskey, his company supplies and funds the Dharma initiative, and he helped lead Desmond to the island the 1st time through. HE is the one who held the boat race competition that took Desmond there. I am 99% sure he is in on the whole thing.
BTW, you said earlier that Mr Widmore isn't connected to the island, but in this post you said he is.

Unintention contradiction. Widmore is undoubtedly connected to the island in many ways, but I don't believe that he is in on this plot to bring Desmond to the island in the way that the monk and Ms. Hawking were.

This should shake things up a bit;
Quote:
Question: Should we expect one or two more deaths in the final weeks of Lost?— Nick
Ausiello: (Major spoiler alert) Get ready to clutch your pearls: I'm told there will be at least five — count 'em, five — deaths on Lost during the month of May. Meanwhile, exec producer Carlton Cuse offers this exclusive tease about the show's two-hour, sure-to-be-blockbuster season finale on May 22: "Let's just say the end of the season features a showdown between Jack and Locke — a showdown long anticipated and a showdown with an extremely significant outcome for the future of the castaways." Just 35 days to go!
Question: I just heard that there's going to be an episode of Lost this season without flashbacks. Is that true?— Dan
Ausiello: Sorta. The May 2 episode won't employ the traditional flashback technique, but there will be flashbacks. They just won't be going back that far.
Question: I recall you having an interview with somebody associated with Lost and talking about a "game changing" episode where we'll be blown away and everything will be turned on its head. Has this episode already aired? I sure hope not. — Chad
Ausiello: That "somebody" would be Damon Lindelof, and no, it hasn't aired yet. My hunch is it's the aforementioned May 2 episode, since it was penned by Darlton (aka Damon and Carlton).

As for the bold statements;
1. Wow, that will be amazing. That is a lot of characters.
2. Finally, this is huge. This has been brewing for a long time now.

I think at least two of them (and likely three) will be OTHERS. I think Naomi the parachute girl will be one of them.
Charlie is the only one we really can expect to die. Though I actually think that its possible he doesn't.

Man I love this show!
I really wanna keep up with this thread but ya'll are posting too many spoilers so I'm just avoiding it. :( From what I have read in here these final few episodes are going to be insane!
BTW, do they have any of the LOST "experience" stuff happening online anymore? I was really into it for awhile but it just got to be too much. I spent so much time dissecting the Hanso Foundation website it's not even funny.

We don't really post many spoilers, and when we do, we usually post them so that you have to highlight them <<< like this>>> . . .
