Turned on the Ireland game in hopes of a miracle goal.
Dammit, Mario.

Would have liked to see Croatia advance rather than the Italians, but admittedly the best two teams are going forward.

Okay, how was Navas not offsides on that goal? On the pass to Iniesta, Navas was clearly offside. I know the pass wasn't to him but he was clearly involved in the play and thus should have been called offsides.

I guess that's what happens when you put your rooting interest in Poland and Croatia. Really thought the latter was going to muster it up and advance. Oh well. Go... England?

The natural ability of Mario Balotelli is ridiculous. I just hate how he's so hard to root for.

I think that's fine. I'm not sure though.

As far as I understand, Navas being offsides doesn't matter since that pass wasn't directed at him, he was onside for the pass directed at him, and the pass was from a teammate, not bouncing off the goalie or crossbars.

Navas wasn't directly involved in the play so the flag stays down. Then he was level on the pass that he scored on. I ref so that's a pretty simple no call.

Maybe they changed the rule since I last refed soccer (it was like 9 years ago) but back then, if a guy is in the offsides position when the ball is kicked and involved in the play, even if the pass isn't directly to him, he's still offsides.

Looking it up on wiki, FIFA stated new offsides rules in 2003 that went official in 2005.

Well, I injured my leg in October 2002 and stopped playing then and then stopped reffing Summer 2003, so it makes sense why I didn't realize the rule changed.

Just read the new rules; Iniesta was offsides on the original pass. His feet were in an onside position but his upper body was offsides.

I mean even if they tied it would still be the same two teams moving forward. Croatia put up a great fight though that's for sure.

I mean his upper body looks pretty level in that photo and FIFA rules don't count arms & hands as offsides.

It's definitely close. And I don't really care about either team. I just wanted clarification on the rule.

If England can prove to keep playing as entertainingly as they did versus Sweden, I'll be rooting for them.
