I don't buy that report. We will probably up our offer a bit from the 12 million, but no way I see us going to 17.

12 million and i'm still killing myself. But yeah, 17 is very unlikely. No way Mike Ashley goes that high. Just the thought of it makes me cringe though.

Before I waste my time posting something decently long, does anyone here want to discuss good young players to use in FM 2012? I am just giddy over how good Mbaye Niang (newly signed by Milan IRL, by the way) and Hervin Ongenda are. France is going to be f'ing scary up front in a few years if these kids are anywhere near as good as they are for me in my save.

With all of the games Madrid has in La Liga, Copa del Rey & Champs League we need midfield cover. Alonso only missed like 3 league games last year and he is getting up there in age. Modric will rotate with Khedira or Alonso. He can cover for Ozil if needed as well. Kaka may be on his way out by the transfer deadline too. Honestly I think defense is our biggest need but I trust the staff with this pursuit.

Didn't realize the price RM paid for Modric. Not worth it at all, IMO. Obviously it is Real, money means a lot less for them than most other clubs, but it just does not make sense. Even if you rate Modric to being worthy of that pricetag(33M), how will his role be worth it for Real? He will be basically a depth player, unlikely to beat out Khedira, Alonso or Ozil when they are fully fit. He's a great player, but as a purely rotational player I would have went with someone a good bit cheaper to fill the void. Lesser names with comparable talent and a much cheaper pricetag are definitely out there, and RM could definitely land them if they wanted to. I am not that big of a fan of the Song deal for similar reasons, but he only cost 15M.

Modric is better than Khedira by quite a bit imo. Now, they are different players, but Modric destroys him overall.

Really sad to see Modric finally go. He is a tremendous player, but I have to echo similar sentiments to the others in this thread. I just don't understand why they pushed so hard and paid so damn much to get him. Dude is a beast no doubt so he deserved to command such a huge fee, but I don't know where he fits in Real Madrid.

Hopefully Spurs can put that money into some new midfielders. Early reports are William and Dembele as well as a swoop for Lloris.

What does Real play exactly? Don't they play a 4-2-3-1. So....

----------Xabi--------Modric----------
DiMaria---------Ozil----------Ronaldo
--------Benzema or Higuian----------

What's wrong with that? Am I forgetting someone obvious? I don't see an issue. I know Mourinho usually likes a bit more steel in his midfield, but Modric, Xabi and Ozil would pass teams to death.

Keep Khedira on the bench.....they're Real, so whatever. Plus, he will get plenty of games because, as mentioned, they have a **** ton of games to play.

Who would be the ball-winner in that lineup? You are right, that line up would be great at passing the ball, but they need someone to put them in that situation in the first place, the job that Khedira/Diarra generally performs. To look at their rivals comparatively, Iniesta and Xavi are two of the greatest playmakers in the game, but they keenly rely on Busquets to win the ball. Alonso is a world class defensive mid, but his quality comes more from being a deep lying playmaker rather than a quasi-defender. Whatever Modric's defensive skill set is, I don't really think it compares to Khedira/Diarra. Considering Mourinho's typical style is more defensive and counter-attacking rather than possessive/tiki-taka, they really need a true ball-winner back there to operate effectively.

Khedira and Xabi mantain the balance between a central midfielder that passes and does the dirty work. Modric (or Moudric lol) would not fit in that balance. I think Modric is basically in Madrid to rotate Ozil and Xabi.

I feel like Xabi could adapt to a ball winner role.....eh, I just think keeping Modric on the bench for Khedira makes no logical sense from a talent perspective.

Honestly they are all going to get playing time. That's all I care about. If it was possible to make it through a season with just Ozil, Khedira, Alonso & I guess Lass as our primary midfielders then Modric would not have been brought in.

They could also rotate out Di Maria and put Ozil on the wing and have Modric, Ozil, and Ronaldo just play in free roles.

I wasn't criticising the signing particularly, lord knows Mourinho knows more than me and seems the players in training etc, from an outisider it just seemed like an interesting conundrum he has given itself.

No problem, coaches make mistakes all the time so anyone can have an opinion! I am a Barcelona fan and personally, I don't mind Modric that much! If Madrid had gone through with the David Silva transfer, THEN I would have **** my pants.

That's the deal I've wanted the most since his Valencia days and Florentino keeps mucking it up badly.

They've upgrade CB and ST while incresing the depth throughout the team, creating actual competition for spots and putting pressure on the top the players rather than just having mediocre backups who don't mind sitting on the bench.

PSG probably deserves a shoutout to, Ibra, Silva, Lavezzi, Verratti and Lucas, is a great haul n they've avoided having to sell Nene.

I like Modric a lot and before the EC would've agreed, but Khedira is really becoming a boss, they're both astounding players and will form a great partnership when Xabi's age becomes too much. Sami's not at Yaya Toure's level yet...but that's just a matter of time.

It'll be heavy rotation with Mourinho breaking out the 4-3-2-1 with Oezil and CR7 behind the striker for games against Barca and other sides that'll pack the midfield.

I'm already nervous for the CL draw on Thursday. There's no doubt in my mind we'll get stuck in the Group of Death again being in Pool B.

Pot 1 is United, Arsenal, Barca, Madrid, Porto, Milan, Chelsea, Bayern

Then we have the chance of getting Juve from pot 3 and one of PSG/B. Dortmund from pot 4.

Dembele to Spurs confirmed. Lloris and Willian getting closer to being done too.

Walcott rejected an extension at Arse and could be on the move this week.

Affelay close to being loaned out too. Didn't travel with Barca to Madrid.

City had a bid rejected for Javi Garcia. Benefica won't sell him for less than the 25M opt out clause.

I think Arsenal should go after Afellay, especially if they are letting Walcott go. Just sounds like a good fit for them. If he can stay healthy, he can be a pretty good player.

Dembele is a great buy. That guy is an absolute thoroughbred out there. If they can snag Willian/Lloris that would be fantastic for them as well, unfortunately. I am a huge fan of Willian's game

I'm liking the Demebele signing. He has some huge upside given he has only been playing in the central midfield for the last year or so. If we land William and Lloris, that will be a great haul.
