Because Real needs help? And Mourinho hasn't had breaks come his way before? Please.
If this was a smaller club against United, I'd say what you said. But Real? Come on now.

Jose needs to win Europe if he wants another year in Madrid. Simple as that.

Either way SAF is going to throw a fit and I can't wait.

Settle down fellas, that was a card, unintentional or not but he kicked dude right in the side. Sucks the ref gave em a red though.

I don't even like United (quite dislike them in fact), I just hate to see a terrible decision turn a match like that (when they are playing Real nonetheless).
Mourinho just said, "the best team lost". Classy move to acknowledge it. He knows.

After the red card against Barcelona a few years ago I have no tears to shed for United. Harsh but that's football.

Mourinho wants SAF's job hard when Fergie retires.
You really think it's outrageous that that got carded?

Oh wow. That is pretty reckless. I didn't think it would be that nasty from the comments here.

Nani extended with a trap and was pulling the ball in when Arbaloa ran into his studs. Keep in mind when Nani extended his leg Arbaloa was at his side not directly in front of him. Hardly malicious intent.
I'd call it a foul and potentially a card given the potential for injury but I'm not sure any other referee gives a red card there.

I thought it was outrageous that it was a red card for sure. Yellow card maaaaybe. His foot was high, but he had no intent to harm. His eye's were focused on the ball the whole time. The video tells a lot more than that picture.

Intent doesn't matter in reckless situations like that. Uefa directive is to send players off for situations like that. Do I think that a yellow would've been more deserved given Nani didn't see him and was just trying to handle the ball? Yeah, but that's at least a yellow regardless of the competition and rules are rules so a red is absolutely justifiable in that situation.

I used to ref soccer, and I would have certainly given that play a yellow. Leaping in the air, leg extended, studs up. That is a card every time. I didn't see it live, so I don't have the complete context. But 100% that should be card and due to the recklessness and danger of that play, I don't really have a problem with it being red.

I can agree on a yellow for recklessness. But I'd still disagree on the red because he had no idea they player was there. Agree to disagree I suppose.

But UEFA's instructed refs to ignore intent in high-risk situations like that and to go straight to red. The ref wasn't very good and I disagree with the UEFA rule, but that's no where near the travesty that people are making it out to be.

I felt like in the first half the ref did a pretty good job keeping things under control. Then the second half rolled around things really kicked off.

Well, I'm happy. Figured Dortmund would do about what they did today and I sure don't mind United leaving. Tomorrow seems like a lesser day for UCL, but you never know what some desperation may bring. I'm just excited for the Cup matches on the weekend.

You and the ref.
It was worthy a yellow, nothing more.
But lost in the shuffle here....... CR7 again baby.

I thought the ref might call it, but I'd have preferred a yellow and then the ref calling the Rafael handball later. Would've been more fitting to the game and left a more fascinating battle.

Dortmund are so sexy in Europe this year. Would love to see them take on the winner of PSG/Valencia next.
Is the draw seeded at the next round? Cause with Schalke's tendency to overachieve in Europe and them actually finding their form, they could actually have a shot against Malaga/Porto, PSG/Valencia or maybe even Milan if they hold on against Barca.

Whoever thinks that's a red first has not taken a physics class in his life before; second he should have his driving license immediately revoked.
