Looking at the projected FIFA rankings for October, Ukraine will have 871 points compared to 870 for France and 850 for Sweden. Had the Swedes drew with Germany last night (they led 2-0 only to lose 5-3) they would've been on 891 points and been seeded for next month's playoffs.

Projected FIFA ranking points for UEFA playoff teams.

Portugal - 1036
Greece - 983
Croatia - 901
Ukraine - 871

France - 870
Sweden - 850
Romania - 767
Iceland - 633

France's 6-0 win over Australia at the weekend was not enough to give their ranking the boost they needed as friendlies don't carry the same ranking weight as WC qualifiers. Being in the smallest Euro group of 5 teams (and two less games compared to the other 8 groups with 6 teams each) might have cost them a seeding and the difference between playing Portugal and Iceland.

England will be a big riser, moving from 947 points to 1,080 thanks to their two wins over Montenegro and Poland. The USA jump from 996 points to 1,040.

looks like the WC seeds will be:
Pot 1: Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Colombia and Uruguay(if they qualify)
Pot 2: Japan, Australia, Iran, Korea, USA, Costa Rica, Honduras, (New Zealand or Mexico)
Pot 3: Ecuador, Chile, 5 CAF teams, 1 UEFA team
Pot 4: Russia, Bosnia, England, Netherlands, Italy, 3 UEFA teams

gonna be some ridiculous groups.

How did Switzerland manage to accumulate so many points playing in a division where Iceland finished in 2nd place?

Pot 4 looks like it'll have more depth then Pot 1, especially if Portugal, France, Croatia and/or Sweden will be there.

Australia Pot 2 huh. Whatever teams get to play us should consider themselves lucky. We had to sack our coach because of bad results in friendlies :\ FRIENDLIES

The Swiss have a good team that only really dropped points in the game they left Iceland come back to draw in. They have a great coach, a strong defense and midfield with Xhaka, Shaqiri, Seferovic, Stocker and a number of other young attackers. Depending on their group they have a good chance to advance to the knockouts at the euros.

Looking at those pools, I'm hoping for an Australia, Burkina Faso, Iceland, Colombia group.

I didn't say that Swiss were a bad team. But Netherlands sliced through their group like a knife through butter and their group was MUCH tougher imo.

The win vs. Brazil in a friendly clearly carries a lot of weight here.

And I guess last year's great friendly wins vs. Germany and Croatia are also.

Switzerland's group was actually better (58.8 vs. 79.6) in the FIFA Rankings. Switerland is 4-2-1 in their last 7 friendlies (with wins over 3 top-10 teams) compared to 3-1-3 for the Netherlands (none in the top 15). It really isn't too surprising.

The funny part is, despite being a seeded WC team, Swiss won't even be in first drawing pot for the Euro qualifiers.

Mexico dismissed coach Victor Manuel Vucetich and Miguel Herrera is set to replace him. Rumors going around that his squad (America) will form the national team (or the majority of it, with replacements for the internationals).

should stop playing only youngsters in our friendlies, its the euros that killed us though, not the friendlies, they barely carry weight although screwing up that game against the belgians probably did make a difference.

by the way, average ranking doesnt really work that well as the backend does weigh way to heavy

lets scratch the swiss and the dutch themselves from the equation

romania(29)
turkey(40)
hungary(43)
estonia(99)

slovenia(30)
iceland(46)
norway(47)
albania(58)

really cant even be bothered to do the last 2 although those are probably in favor of the swiss. Still know which group is tougher and if you think about the game in reality you know romania and turkey are the toughest 2 teams of the teams above
