LOL, Diaby nearly made history there.

He nearly scored 2 goals in about a minute, into his own and opponents'.

3-0 Inter at half time. And Milan will be playing with 10 men in the second half, with Gattuso being sent off.

****.

Really, this is bull. Crap like this happens all the time. It's the equivalent of Roger Goodell taking away a team's entire draft for talking to a free agent before the free agency period opens. It's technically not permitted, but every big team does it.

Hey, maybe Real Madrid should be banned for inducing Cristiano Ronaldo. Oh, and Man U should get banned for the dozens of times they've done this exact thing in the past. What? It's not gonna happen?

That has to be the biggest ******** I've ever seen in any sport. Ever. Okay, maybe a little hyperbole, and I don't even like Chelsea. But seriously, until January 2011? That's two whole transfer windows. Even missing one could be devastating.

Well, not much was likely to happen in the winter window, but missing the next summer window is downright devastating. The rumors had it that Chelsea were saving up cash to make serious bids for Pato, Aguero et al this coming summer.

And Chelsea isn't exactly a YOUNG squad. Dunno if they have it in 'em to keep stable until January.

The kicker, and in my opinion the most ******* of all the ******* things, is that they WAITED until JUST AFTER the summer window closed, so we couldn't make any emergency signings.

It does seem ridiculous considering the amount of times teams are accused of doing this sort of things but Roma ended up with the same punishment a few years back after signing Phillipe Mexes, so it could end up sticking. Although you'd imagine that the ban would get reduced after an appeal.

Although a much smaller club, FC Sion in Switzerland got the same punishment as well recently, they are appealing to the Court for Arbitration of Sport as we speak, I imagine Chelsea will be awaiting the results of that appeal with great interest, since it is likely to set a precedent Chelsea will either a) be able to use or b) make an appeal less likely to succeed.

That ban was lifted entirely upon appeal.

I think secretly Abrahmovich is smiling. If this stays it will give him two windows without any spending and they'll come back with a vengeance in summer '11 when the recession may have lifted. Also just think, they have Cech tied up, Cole signed a new deal, im expecting really big things from Mancienne when he comes back from Wolves, Zhirkov is young, Essien, Joe Cole and Carvalho will all still be in their prime in two years. While it's not ideal it is not the end of the world for Chelsea but they will have to replace Terry, fat Frank, Drogba, Anelka, Ballack, Deco etc in a few years so it may delay that recovery

What I'm guessing will happen: Chelsea will appeal, and drag the appeal out into the January 2010. This gives Abramovich the opportunity to go after some young talent in preparation for the ban.

The ban will then be reduced to one window, as is the current precedent. Chelsea will miss out on the Summer '10 window. They will only buy as needed during the Winter '11 window, and then (now flush with cash and with a transfer kitty twice the normal size) return with a vengeance in Summer 11--- just in time to buy some superstars to replace aging Drogba, Anelka, Ballack, Deco, Lampard and Terry.

In other news, here are some amusing and surprising responses from other English football fans, who you'd expect to be celebrating like the New Republic after the destruction of the second Death Star (courtesy of Sky.com):

Jacob Weeks (Arsenal fan) says...
I think it's unfair to target Chelsea like this. There are plenty of teams that deal in this way. Yes it needs to be stopped but it really is all going against English clubs at the moment. Just like UEFA targeted Eduardo despite all the other players like Ronaldo who dive constantly. If you punish one the rest must be punished

Rockozzz King (Manchester United fan) says...
This is a very harsh ruling. It's been said here before and I agree that English clubs are being singled out. I'm curious what FIFA or UEFA will come up with next? I just can't see this ban sticking past January. It will be overturned and Chelsea will splash in the market next summer.

Josh Hunt (Manchester United fan) says...
I have to say I feel for Chelsea fans on this occasion. Would a punishment of this severity have been handed to Real Madrid? I think not.

Sam Spidouski (Fulham fan) says...
How come Madrid were not punished for the Ronaldo affair. Rumour has it he had signed a pre-contract the year before joining them. No consistency.... another example of this is how Eduardo was punished for diving when no further retrospective decisions on diving are planned Seemingly, Blatter will not be happy until the Premierships stranglhold on Europe is no more.

Steve H (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...
Absolutely ridiculous! Seems to be a witch hunt against chelsea. all of the bigger teams act in the same manner.

James Weldon (Newcastle United fan) says...
This is an absolute joke. Typical of the governing bodies targeting English football once again. This should be over-ruled. But then again, only a Manchester United fan will see this as fair. They get the roll of the dice every single time.

Dave W (Bolton Wanderers) says...
It seems very harsh to Chelsea, especially over a reserve team player, if this is the case then, why don't Fifa do the same to Real Madrid? There pursuit of players is very questionable most of the time.

Martin Steeper (Doncaster Rovers) says...
This just proves what we already knew. Platini and his chums at FIFA, hate the English game. I dont care much for Chelsea but this wouldnt happen to R.Madrid, Barca, Lyon, Inter etc.

Lj Wilson (Newcastle United) says...
Seems a tad harsh to me. It seems as though Fifa are just trying to punish the English teams more than any other country.

I think I overreacted. I didn't realize there was precedent (probably just jumped to conclusions when I heard Goodell mentioned in the analogy).

Anyway, I'll just add that a January transfer ban would normally hurt less than a summer one (no one wants to deal in January, whether you're trying to win or trying to survive), but in this case, if it applies only to this upcoming January, it might hurt more than expected due to the African Cup of Nations and the nature of Chelsea's squad.

Actually, that's a bit of a myth (at least regarding this go around). Chelsea faces a very easy stretch during the ACN, with the toughest matchup being against Sunderland. Even with a depleted squad they shouldn't have problems racking up points during the duration.

I think this could potentially hurt Chelsea's title hopes. An injury to Drogba or Essien during the ACN would be hard to swallow given how important they are. On a side note, I'm interested in seeing Zhirkov sometime soon. I'm definitely not a Chelsea supporter, but I'm curious to see how he does compared to Malouda.
