The Pistons are probably the only team that can offer CV more money than the MLE. And if they cant land Boozer, they may just do so. Otherwise, he'll be had for the MLE as well.

Grant Hill has interest in returning to the Suns or Magic on the cheap.

And I def. think Dwight and Hedo are sincere, this is a very close team and Lewis/Turk have grown very, very close the last few years. Dwight expressed his distaste for the trade initially to get VC as well because, he was such good friends with Lee and Battie. He's since said he likes the deal and VC now but, he's a little torn at the same time. So, he's holding out hope they could bring Turkoglu back into the fold.
For Toronto to have a chance they have to let Shawn Marion, Anthony Parker and Joey Graham all walk, which would get them at $9M under. Will they offer Hedo something in the $11-12M range? Hedo and his agent can talk all they want. They have to make it look like there is a big market for his services.

The only team I think would give Bass more than the MLE is Dallas. But I admit, they may not be willing to do that. Bass is drawing a lot of interest though. I mean if Gortat can command the MLE, I would think Bass could. That said, I'd be surprised if Gortat got it...AND a starting gig.

Read a rumor saying Sheed to the Celtics is a lock.

I would've been totally baffled if Hedo's Magic teammates didn't catch his back immediately after the VC trade.

Ric Bucher named Hedo the #1 Free Agent...and said to watch Utah as well. There is a market for Hedo. And Portland is leading the way.

You're right in saying only Dallas will offer him more than the MLE but, he could certainly pull in the MLE. And Gortat should actually be in high demand because, he is a true center. There arent a whole lot of great centers out there and Gortat has intriguing enough potential to get the full MLE. He will def. be starting next year if Orlando doesnt retain him, imo. Houston is said to be real hot after him now, also.

I also heard a rumor that Otis may split our MLE because, we're so strapped for cash. That may be a problem.

The mid level exception. It's something teams use when they have no available cash. It's equal to the average NBA salary. Essentially, almost every team in the NBA is over the salary cap come FA time. So, they use this exception, worth almost $5.6 million to sign FAs. You could also split this to obtain more than one free agent.

To be clear...even teams under the cap can use it but, this is normally the biggest chip teams over the cap have to work with.

Mid-level exception. Permits an NBA team to spend a set amount of money above the normal salary cap limit. Can be split any number of ways.

Do they have to make a salary dump before the season begins or they are over the cap when the season begins ?

Almost every team is over the cap. But the NBA has a luxury tax in place so, you can be over the salary cap. But if you exceed the set luxury tax, the team/owner will have to pay for every cent you go over, dollar for dollar. A lot of teams do this but there are also plenty of teams that avoid the tax at all costs. Even if it means blowing up their team or giving away good players for nothing.

Just some examples...

The Knicks were $37 million over the cap last year.
The Lakers were $22 million over the cap last year.
The Celtics were $20 million over the cap last year.
The Magic were $11 million over the cap last year.

Because the Knicks, Lakers, and Celtics were so far over the cap, they paid the luxury tax and the Magic did not last year. But really, damn near every team is actually over the cap. They just dont all go over the luxury tax.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but teams can spend more than the MLE. It's just that the MLE contracts are not penalized by the Luxury tax.

If you're over the cap, you can only use the MLE. You cant make actual offers....because basically, that money isnt actual there.

If you remember last year, the Spurs and Magic were courting Corey Maggette but all both teams had to offer was the MLE because, they were both over the cap. But then here comes GS out of no where with actual cap room and they put the MLE to shame because they had the available money to do so.

It just takes 1 team for there to be a market on a player. Hedo would fit Utah perfectly. But if Boozer and Okur stay, they won't be players in FA.

I can see Gortat in Houston. Read that one too.

Who do you like the Magic going after? What PG options do you see?

What did you think about Bob Vander Weide saying the team "doesn’t care about no stinkin’ league luxury tax. Just give me the tab, baby."?

Well we're already sitting at $68 million thanks to VC. That's $1 million south of the tax. Most think we'd be tapped out at about $10 million over. Thus why, re-signing Hedo now after bringing in VC seems very unlikely. Because, he alone eats up all of that. We have 4-5 guys to add. It's going to be pretty tough to get some real good talent.

I was liking the Bass talk but, now Otis says we may need to split the MLE. If that's the case, I dont even know what to expect. You could forget about Sheed or Bass if we do that. And you'd probably have to start Pietrus because, you wont find a great starting caliber PF for a portion of the MLE, most likely.

AJ is back but, we could use a PG, SG/SF, starting caliber PF, and a center.

Cheaper guys to keep an eye on...PG Ronnie Price, PG Marcus Williams, PG Jason Hart, SG/SF Keith Bogans, SF Matt Barnes, SF Yakhouba Diawara, SG/SF Rodney Carney, SF Grant Hill, PF Channing Frye, PF Sean May, PF Soloman Jones, PF James Singelton.

Added some more ^ after looking at an available FA list. Not amazing at all. haha.

I figure Otis will atleast find a way to bring in some name talent some how. He keeps flip flopping on things this off-season. We want Hedo, we dont want Hedo, we want Hedo, we cant afford Hedo, we want Hedo. lol. We want to add a quality starter with our MLE, we will make offers to Bass and Wallace as soon as FA starts, we wont be making any offers right away and sit tight, we will be splitting the MLE.

I dont know what to believe exactly.

Interesting summer for the Hawks. They are one of the few teams under the cap but have huge decisions. IMO I wouldn't resign Bibby. He's too old and after signing Jamal Crawford and drafting Jeff Teague there is no use for him. Marvin Williams should just be given a 1 year tender as I don't think anyone will give him a big serious offer in which we would be forced to match. Flip Murray could be brought back for cheap and I really want Zaza back. Apparently the Hawks are up there with the Cavs in the Charlie V sweepstakes but aside from depth I don't really see where his fit on this team would be since the Hawks need big bodies. I think bringing in someone like Chris Wilcox would really fit the team style and need.

Wilcox is someone I wouldnt mind either but, he'll want more than he deserves at this point. And someone is bound to give him that probably because, a lot of people think he has untapped potential still.

Eh I doubt he gets a big contract. I can actually see him maybe giving the Wizards a home town discount but that seems unlikely since our FO seems to be set with our roster, the only possible move is if someone will trade a vet big man for Mike James expiring contract.

Bucher in Sac-to said Amare will still go to the Warriors. Conditional draft picks instead of Curry. Warriors will offer Amare a new contract immediately. If that happens, even though I love Biedrins, major steal for the Warriors.

I dont think Wilcox will get a bid deal...just not something Orlando would be willing to pay for him.

I agree that the Hawks shouldn't bring back Bibby. I think they have made the right moves to move on without him. Bibby is a guy I would like the Magic to pursue unless his price tag gets out of range. I don't consider him a guy that would demand the full MLE. This might be a reach, but Otis Smith has gone after 2 of those old Kings players in the past... Doug Christie and Hedo. LOL.

Marvin might find a surprising market, but it's safe to say now that he has never lived up to the heights of his hype.

The Hawks are so close to being so good. I like what they've got cookin'. They need to keep Joe Johnson next summer though. If they had a dominant center and moved Smith to SF and Horford to PF, they'd be really scary.

The problem is that Hawks FO doesn't believe in depth. They believe in a 6 or 7 man rotation. They have had so many years to add some veteran depth but would rather fill out 5 or 6 roster spaces with defunct D-league players. It's frustrating because this team just looks the same every year the only difference is the hope that the young guys will take one step more but as usual Horford, Jsmoove, Marvin, Solomon, look the same as they did the year before. The troubling thing is that the years have gone by so fast that JJ is already going to be a FA next summer. That scares me a lot. If JJ leaves the Hawks are back to being a perennial contender for the #1 pick every year.

Yeah, Sheed and Bass both seem like long shots now. Was fun to hear at the time, but I think Otis is more a Juwan Howard/Adonal Foyle kinda guy. He sure sounds flippy floppy like you said.

More from Hedo's Agent Lon Babby... "I don't want to comment like Hedo's already gone," Babby said. "Let's see how this thing unfolds. I'm not ready to talk about Hedo and the Magic in the past tense."

If you read Brian Schmitz's story in today's edition of the Sentinel, you'll see that GM Otis Smith also refuses to close the door on bringing back Turkoglu.

"They (the Magic) have said they want to talk to us," Babby said. "It's really just a matter of how much money they are willing to spend. Is it (Turk's return to Orlando) likely? I don't know. It's harder now than it was before -- not just financially but what the team's going to look like and what Hedo's role would be on the team. But I don't preclude anything until the process unfolds."

Yeah, they have to expand the usage of their bench. I liked their depth... just not their frontcourt depth. They have the pieces to make a trade for frontcourt size. They should've entered the Amare Stoudemire sweepstakes.

That's the biggest thing really...how much money the team wants to spend as we were saying. Most say $10 million over at the most. That would eliminate any chance of Hedo but, if they could talk them into opening the wallet a little more, perhaps. haha. There is always a chance, it doesnt seem likely but, there is still a small chance. Everyone was saying the same thing prior to us losing Mcgrady, Darko, and Keyon, though. I've been let down before.

I want Hedo back. It would just be funny to see how we'd fill out the rest of our roster. We'd have to bring in 3-4 guys for the minimum. Could you imagine 3-4 Jeremy Richardson's or Mike Wilk's or even Adonal Foyle's? But actually getting playing time. hahahahaha.

Chris Broussard just said he thinks Hedo will land in Toronto. Calls it a neck and neck race with Portland.
