Pretty much.
I doubt Melo would've signed a contract extension if he knew NY wanted him that bad. If I'm NY, I know I'm not winning a title this year and sign Melo in the off-season and try as hard as I can to keep either Gallo or Felton (depending on how bad they want Deron Williams or CP3).
He was going to NY regardless, it was just a matter of how bad NY wanted him.

Yup, once they see Melo playing with Stat, I'm sure they'll all come around.

The Knicks might have given up a little too much, but they weren't gonna win anything without another star and taking the gamble of getting Melo in FA would have been dumb. They have to bank on getting a few guys to replace Chandler and Gallo but this was a deal they had to make. The roster they had before this was barely even .500 in the East, which I know has some great teams but it's extremely top heavy and they get to beat up on some awful teams. This deal had to happen.

as far as i can tell the only people on the Knicks roster for the 2012 FA class will be Melo and Amare at around 40 mil which leaves enough room for another max contract, then they use the MLE on someone and sign vets etc, just like the Heat

I'm just hoping NY can either fall/climb out of the 6 spot. Do not want Melo in playoffs vs. Bulls.

I am excited for the future rivalry though with the Knicks and Heat.
If NY does eventually get CP3 or Deron, then I'm taking them all day er'day

This is really fantastic news though. I expect the amount of posts about Mozgov and Gallo to go down one million percent.

If Minny's pick is lottery protected it's a good trade.

AGREED!
What assets? RFA to be Chandler? Mozgov? Felton for 2 years until Paul or DWill (as opposed to Billups for 2 years until Paul)?
Gallo's contract would have prohibited us from signing a PG in 2 years anyway...

Not really, Curry is a huge expiring and Randolph while he sucks now and will probably continue to suck still has upside. We're going to be in the lottery for a while anyway and non-lottery picks are basically a crapshoot in the NBA.
If it's not protected though holy ******* **** this is bad.

Randolph has some skills which he showed in GS last year. Getting minutes in Minny could help him, look how Minny changed Beasley's career when most were ready to write him out of the league. Plus Curry is a 12 mil expiring so yeah.

Wow way to botch my statement to try to prove yours and then not be able to prove your point.
Why would the NBA who owns Chris Paul's contract and the team he plays for allow him to go to NY. They would essential kill their own business cause they don't want contraction and letting Paul leave kills the Hornets franchise.
Get Dwill with what? you have no assets you just gave them all to the nuggets and wolves.
All those players you are trying to **** on have trade value as we can clearly see. They would have been able to make us forming a big 3 much more realistic.

yes but that is taking a massive risk in that you arent promised at getting either Melo or one of the PGs. Melo clearly needed that extension...he made it as obvious as one could and NY couldn't give it to him without the trade. When you have the ability to grab someone like Melo....you do....you don't worry about how this hurts your chances at getting a different top 10 player in 2 years time

I am not worried his whole point was how now we can form a big 3 but we cant cause thanks to melo's extension we got no $ to improve this team and no assets to trade for the 3rd member.
The roster as constructed as I posted up above a couple posts ago are not winning ****.

Because when CP3 is a FREE agent he is ALLOWED to go wherever he wants.
All those players have value to get us what exactly? What did you want us to go out and get?
They would have been able to make us forming a big 3 much more realistic.
I'm pretty sure you can't form a big three until you have a big 2 first.
"The Toast" is coming true whether you want it to our not. UNLESS the CBA changes (and the cap doesn't go which it always does) in such a way that would not allow us to afford another max contract AND CP3/Deron choose to not take less money (which is also a possibility - especially when you consider that both are rumored to want to play with these two in NY).

Melo was getting his money either way. Whether it was with NYK, NJ, Denver or whoever. His primary goal was clearly to get that 3 year 65 mil extension.
