Unless they are guaranteeing that Dwight goes to Brooklyn I think I like our chances of landing Dwill. You're talking like Cuban has never reloaded our team every season. He's done that consistently and given us a deep bench. And there is plenty of players in the FA for role players and depth. It's not like we need to add another all star to the team to be contenders when we already are.
I understand that, I do, and Cuban's one of, if not, the best in the biz and Carlisle is probably the 3rd best coach in the NBA and gets the most out of everyone. But in terms of assets to get better, the Nets posses more than the Mavs. And it's not like the Mavs were some super team either needing just Deron as the missing piece, you guys snuck into the playoffs as the 8 seed. Yeah, I know I'll get the "Nets suck lols" in response, but nobody really notices that they lost the most manpower games out of anyone this season, which includes 5 games and the end of the season with Deron, Bropez missing most of the year with his foot injury, and us being forced to start guys like Shelden Williams. It got ugly. If we were so bad, you ask, why would Deron want to go there to win?
All those injuries were extremely costly. We were throwing pure scrubs out there and pulled 22 wins out of our asses. But Bropez will be back. Reports are saying Wallace will re-up with us as well. MarShon Brooks (who's going to be a really good scorer in this league) has another year under his belt. Morrow and Green are good bench players and scorers. It's not a team that lacks talent. It's not like we're in full out rebuilding mode. Bringing back Deron, and a huge "if" of staying healthy, the nets are a playoff team. Granted a low seed in the weak east, but they're hardly some **** team that needs full rebuilding. In terms of assets, I really feel the nets also have more than the mavs:
Mavs roster: (contracts going into next season)
Dirk: 20.9 mil (his contract doesn't really matter, as his super star prowess is a huge plus enough)
Marion: 8.6 mil with another year after. It'll be hard to ditch his contract and Marion's aging fast and not worth that money right now.
Haywood: 8.3 mil with 2 more years afterwards. Bad, bad contract. Should get amnestied, but even still, it's a liability at this point.
Roddy B: 2.2 Mil. Not a big contract, good enough player, but really just kinda meh.
Domique Jones: 1.2 mil. Young kid with some talent but really a non factor in this.
total, that's 41.2 mil. Throw in Deron's max (about 16 I think) and that's 57.2 mil. Let's say the cap is 60 mil, you'd have less than 3 mil to try and entice more free agents. Even with the amnesty of Haywood, that's about 10 mil to work with and not many players on your squad. Who're you going to fill them with? Who's out there? And this is me not counting any of the team options, as I assume the Mavs will decline the most impactful ones.
Now, to the Nets:
Morrow: 4 million expiring
Farmar (assuming he picks up his player option) 4.25 expiring.
Petro: 3.5 million expiring
Bropez: 4.1 qualifying offer
Jordan Williams (less than 1 mil)
that's, in total, about 18 million dollars. 18 million. Throw in Deron, and the Nets are around 35 mil. Boost Lopez's by, let's say 5 mil (since he's coming off injury, but some team may throw him an offer) and that's at 40 mil. Wallace's rumored contract talks have been 3 years 24 mil, so that's 8 mil, putting the nets at still under 50 mil, with pretty much a full starting lineup with quality guys such as Lopez, Brooks and Wallace alongside Deron.
Lopez is a better trade asset than anyone on the Mavs, plus the Nets have almost 12 million bucks in expirings with Ammo, Johan and Farmar.
I'm not saying it's a no brainer for Deron to stay with the Nets and I'm not saying the Mavs would be a dumb decision, but in terms of assets to make moves and all around talent, it's not like the Mavs are far and away the obvious choice for Deron.
I've made my side of the argument and reasoned why he should choose the Nets over the Mavs, so for now, I'm going to bear with the rumors for this week, see what kind of crazy moves the nets pull out of their ass on draft day (because i'm almost positive one is coming) and sit back and hope Deron stays with us.
