There is basically one outlier. Actually, there are 2. But one if them is in the 2000s.

Just ran the numbers and there is a negligible difference in eFG% between eras. In terms of PPG however, the eighties were essentially a juiced ball era and the nineties were higher scoring than both the 2000-2010 period and the 2010-2014 period. So, basically, go away.

What are the totals for 3PA, FTA and foul calls between the eras?

I can't do it now since I'm at work. I just did a quick and dirty excel dump.

Actually, just did it quick. Why not?

3PA are, predictably, up each era.

FTA are down with each era that passes (80s had the most, then 90s, etc)

Fouls follow the same pattern as FTA and have gone down with each passing era.

I love how I said you can't compare stats btw eras and the rebuttal is "Na uh! Look at the statz!"

Well done gentlemen. Well done.

God forbid using the eyeball test.

WAT? Using logic and statistics rather than philosophical non-sense of "THIS IS HOW THE GAME HAS CHANGED" in a game predicated on statistics and efficiency? NON-SENSE, GOOD SIR!

As Commie has stated numerous times, rules have changed that both deter and benefit defenses since the 80's until now. We're not talking about football, which has mostly undergone a one-sided set of rule changes to benefit offense.

I'd argue that basketball is one of the most consistent stat driven sports anywhere. I mean, maybe baseball, but even then there has been many huge changes to the rules and way the game is played to impact the consistency and comparison of stats overtime.

And yes BBD, you don't have to care about what we say, just like how no one gives a **** about what you say because it's all idiocy based on your own terrible perception of basketball.

Considering ive spent the last year or so digging up and watching every old playoff (or notable regular season) clip/game I could find, including every game of every important 80s and early 90s playoff series (just finished the 94 finals and am moving onto 95), the eyeball test argument holds zero water against me.

Hard fouls receive much harsher penalties now, and are less common as a result, but there were just as many ticky tack BS calls in other eras as there are now. The idea that you would get mauled any time you drove into the paint and a foul would never be called is one of the more ridiculous misconceptions ive seen. Hand checking mattered for a select few defenders who actually knew how to use it (Payton, Moncrief, etc) but it generally didnt alter the games that much. In fact, 80s games were a thousand times more free flowing and defenseless than they are now.

That changed in the 90s when perimeter skilled talent became far rarer (Center was the only really strong position of the decade. SF was pathetic, PG after Stockton/Payton was pretty bad, SG after Jordan and Miller was fairly awful) and games slowed down to accommodate the focus on the big men. And because almost every decent team had good bigs down low posting up, a lot of games revolved around 40 minutes of banging in the paint, which is one of the only ways that the game was definitely more physical. And that's the biggest change from then to now, along with the intricacies of defensive schemes that we see now that came along with the allowance of the zone and the evolution of the 3P shot.

Great post above commie! I preferred the 90's style mostly because I prefer post play over chucking up 3 pointers and I'd guess that the fouls difference is because of this change.

I think the 90's was more physical, not necessarily better defensively but certainly more physical and due to the different styles of how the game is played it is even further accentuated. In the 90s the guards drove to the hole to draw fouls on the bigs or the bigs were posted up. Nowadays the best "bigs" in the league are predominantly high post face up players and they have been for the past decade, even Duncan, as by far the best post player of the last decade, is a far more face up based player than the old timers were.

It's a preference thing, I preferred the more physical inside based game over the modern finesse and long distance style. Doesn't mean I don't still enjoy it though, just preferred that brand.

The NFL on the other hand... their changes seem to be focused on becoming more like basketball and less like football, honestly I can't really think of any rule change outside the OT rules that I've liked in the past decade that I've been following(I'm sure there is one, I just can't think of it) and for those who've been watching longer than I have it would be even worse.

People have enjoyed making fun of his last few years (which admittedly were awful) but it's not like he's always been a negative player. Same thing happened with Monta this year. We're so quick to turn these guys into punchlines that we forget that they have potentially useful skills. I'll admit I've been guilty of this too in the past to an extent, but not as much as a lot of people.

Not really a big fan of Brons comments about Wades injuries and chemistry being off and all that. Then he followed it up by saying he doesn't want to make excuses except that's what he's doing and nobody wants to hear excuses for the best player in the world coming off 2 rings.

Durant never got an excuse or pass for losing Westbrook in the playoffs. He's not getting one now either he's just stepping his game up which is what I love to see out of superstars. I just think both of their situations now are somewhat similiar and I thought the contrast between the two was interesting.

Really? KD didn't get a pass last year in playoffs? He absolutely did. And rightfully so.

I'll admit I've been guilty of this too in the past to an extent, but not as much as a lot of people.
It comes with the territory when he makes as much money as he does. His turnaround has been astounding, quite honestly, and it may just be a simple change in coaching philosophy. His shot selection has improved quite a bit leading to his TS% sky rocketing. Who would have thought that some actual coaching would help a guy.

I heard far more people being harder on him during that playoff run and for his play. I don't agree but I remember some of the articles bashing him right after.
