Default HOF Cailber Clutch -- Tony Romo

I saw this on a fan blog regarding Romo and thought I'd post it here.

Props to Davidh from the Boys Blog for doing the research.

"I just went through every Romo game and checked out his performance for every drive inside of two minutes of the first and second halves.

Gentlemen, at the risk of sounding hysterical, we have ourselves one of the most clutch QB’s of all time - in the regular season, at least.

In 25 games where he has thrown a pass in the regular season, Romo has led 16 end-of-first half drives to give Dallas a chance to score, and they scored on 12 of them (8 TD’s and 4 FG’s). The rest were missed field goals. He also led the Cowboys to 6 end-of-game drives, which ended up with 3 TD’s and 2 FG (one missed FG).

His stats for these last-gasp drives? Try a staggering 113-91-1081-9-0. For those of you keeping score at home, that’s a completion percentage of, oh, roughly 80%.

Lookie here:

2006 Results:

vs. NY GIANTS – 3-3-74-1-0…4th quarter 2:00, from 15-36 to 22-36

vs. PHIL – 7-5-53-1-0…2nd quarter, TD pass with 44 seconds left
2006 Total: Eight (8) end of first half drives, resulting in 7 FGA and 4 FGM, and two touchdown passes; Three (3) end of game drives, resulting in one touchdown pass (in a lopsided loss), one game-winning FG, and one blocked game-winning FG.

Stats – 43-32-506-3-0

2007 Totals

vs. St. Louis – 10-6-64-0-0…2nd quarter, 15-yard TD run with 16 seconds left

vs. Detroit – 6-6-50-1-0, 15 yard run…2nd quarter, TD pass with 33 seconds left - 10-8-79-1-0…4th quarter, TD pass with 22 seconds left
2007 Total: Eight (8) end-of-half drives, resulting in six (6) touchdowns, one FG and one MFG; Three (3) end of game drives, resulting in two (2) touchdown passes and one FG.

Stats – 70-59-575-6-0

And by the way, this isn’t even counting several drives that scored clinching points in the final two minutes – vs GB in 2007 – or that ran out the clock – i.e., vs. Colts in 2006, or last minute drives that just came up short, i.e., Detroit 2006).

I am this close (holding index finger and thumb about 3 cm apart) to making a golden statue of Romo in my backyard, and bowing down before it, dancing naked and maybe even sacrificing some neighborhood cats"

Before you bow down, let him at least win a play-off game and more importantly a championship before you do so.

I agree, he's been clutch and putting up big numbers.

I bet if you dig deeper into that research, Barber was in on probably 90% or more of those drives at the end of the half and 4th qt, if not all of them....thats when were at our best

I'm starting to hear a LOT of people refer to Romo as "the next great one."

Take it for what you will.

Who considers driving at the end of the first half clutch? Clutch is coming back from behind with little time. At least, thats how I consider it.

Clutch is performing under pressure, and succeeding when it's needed most. So, getting a score at the end of the first haldf to end on a good note, could be considered clutch, but not always.

I guess it just depends on how you interpret clutch. I just always considered it if you're losing and come back. 80% completion is crazy though. The question is if he can keep it up in the playoffs.

Yes, at this point all that matters is winning a playoff game, if he loses the 1st playoff game all the Romo doubters will come out and say he folds under pressure and such, I can already hear it coming...

Speaking of which I hope we dont draw Seattle, they probably give us the most problems with their 4 wrs all over the field

Manning had doubters too. I'd hope it isn't in Tony's head. Those things can get to ya.

Remember it is Romo who marched us down the field not once but twice at the end of the Seattle game last year in the playoffs.
