I think it's more that they're not as close as you think they are.
To put it bluntly, they aren't good passing the ball and defending the pass. You just won't make the playoffs with that being the case.

i thought their defense played pretty well last year. it was good enough at least. they just couldnt score. that defense was on the field way too much.
i think with a good run game, and perhaps one more playmaker WR and a game manager qb, they can be decent.
it really depends on their offseason. we've seen less talented teams turn it around before.

The Falcons desperately need Abraham and Coleman to stay healthy and productive for 16 games, and for Anderson to take the next step and become a pass rushing force. They have the makings of a tremendous D-line, which could be their saving grace, but it's full of question marks.
And they need a big run-stuffing nose tackle to compliment the group they have now. Grady Jackson previously filled that role.

I'm just not seeing what you're seeing, BBD.
They don't have a good #2 or #3 corner, which allows their #1 corner to not be as exposed as he can be. Their safeties suck, and the middle linebacker isn't much better. The LDE they drafted hasn't looked anything more than a non-factor, and Rod Coleman is only a year older and injury prone the last two years.
If not for Carolina's offense being a waste of space, the Falcons will get lit up for 30 in every division game. And they can't pass the ball well enough to outscore that.

well, a big thing for me will be their offseason. i need to see what they do before i put my stamp on them.
Remember, Houston and Anderson were rookies. They should get better. Like BF51 said, if they get a NT and they can stay healthy, they can have a very good dline. They won't be the best defense on earth, but if a couple of things fall their way, theyll be good.
As for offense, well, thats where they need to focus their offseason. They should go after a veteran qb like Warner to hold the fort, and develop a qb behind him preferably a 2nd round qb.
*shrug* it remains to be seen what happens. last year was a surreal experience for them. its hard to play well with all the crap they went through.

These threads keep popping up, but even these are going to be hard to judge without seeing what players get released and signed and drafted...
All I know is im sticking with the super bowl matchup of the Chargers vs the Cowboys
