Default Sporting News: AFC Tight Ends

Quote:
1. CHARGERS: Antonio Gates is as integral to the offense's success as LaDainian Tomlinson. Gates can get open deep and is an excellent red zone target. Brandon Manumaleuna is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league.

2. BROWNS: Kellen Winslow has a rare mix of talent and drive. With good health the past two years he has flourished. Steve Heiden (6-5, 257) is an ideal backup; he has a big body for blocking and is an adequate receiver.

3. CHIEFS: Look for Tony Gonzalez to have another big season. At 32, he doesn't run as well as he once did, but he can still make difficult catches when covered well. Rookies Brad Cottam and Mike Merritt will help as blockers.

4. COLTS: Dallas Clark is overshadowed by the team's excellent wideouts, but he exploits the deep middle and picks up yards after the catch. Depth is a concern. The team is counting on draft picks Jacob Tamme and Tom Santi.

5. STEELERS: Heath Miller is one of the best all-around tight ends, though he has been underused as a receiver. He runs good routes and is a tenacious blocker. Matt Spaeth (6-7, 270) is a big target with good hands.

6. RAVENS: If Todd Heap isn't on the field -- he missed 10 games in '07 -- the passing game will be in trouble. He still has the speed to get deep. Daniel Wilcox is also a good receiver, but the team's tight ends lack muscle as blockers.

7. PATRIOTS: Even though Benjamin Watson has never blossomed into a 60-catch target, he has become a far better blocker than expected. Marcus Pollard, 36, still has some snaps left in him, and David Thomas has flashed promise.

8. BRONCOS: Tony Scheffler has good chemistry with Jay Cutler and is a dangerous weapon in the seams, but his foot problems are a concern. Nate Jackson has excellent hands, and Daniel Graham is a strong in-line blocker.

9. TITANS: Since being slowed by a knee injury in '07, newcomer Alge Crumpler has lost about 15 pounds. The Titans expect him to revive his career. Bo Scaife won't have the No. 1 role anymore, but he'll make a significant contribution.

10. TEXANS: Owen Daniels has been a favorite target of the team's quarterbacks the past two years and is an improved blocker. He must overcome fumbling issues. Mark Bruener is a good blocker, and Joel Dreessen has potential.

11. RAIDERS: Though he lacks speed, Zach Miller gets open and has good hands. He's a reliable blocker, but there's room for improvement. John Madsen is a converted receiver who has the speed to create mismatches.

12. JETS: Chris Baker has the best hands on the team but isn't much of a vertical option. Free-agent pickup Bubba Franks can still be a threat in the red zone. First-round pick Dustin Keller needs to work on his blocking.

13. JAGUARS: Marcedes Lewis is coming into his own as a blocker but is still developing as a receiver. Depth is an issue. George Wrighster is struggling with a knee injury and might not be ready for camp.

14. BENGALS: This is not a key position in their scheme -- the Bengals haven't had a 30-catch tight end since 1997. But free-agent acquisition Ben Utecht should help the passing game, and Reggie Kelly is a solid blocker.

15. BILLS: Robert Royal is a strong blocker but isn't a threat in the passing game. The Bills hope rookie Derek Fine develops into an all-around tight end.

16. DOLPHINS: There isn't much impact here. Incumbent David Martin will get a serious challenge from former Cowboy Anthony Fasano. Coaches like Fasano's motor, and he probably has better hands than Martin.

Glad to see Heath Miller getting some recognition!

How can a team with concern at depth be ranked 4th? I thought this was an entire position ranking, not a starter ranking. Clark is good, but he's not so good he makes the TE corps for the Colts as a whole better than teams with more depth.

I'd have to agree. The Steelers and Broncos as a team have better TEs than the Colts have currently. Not sure how a team with two rookies at the postions can be better than a half a dozen teams in the AFC. Not saying that Tamme won't turn into a great #2 for us, but right now a ranking of #4 for soley just Clark is overated.

Don't think the Jaguars should be rated so low. We had a very good rotation of Marcedes Lewis, George Wrighster, and Greg Estandia before George and Greg were both lost for the season. In the same game.

The Raiders and jets should be higher than what they are. especially those teams who lack depth at TE

These rankings are always interesting. It seems like they ignore depth and just focus on the starter. I mean yes Dallas Clark is a great TE, but who else do they have? No one.

From a talent perspective, I think the Colts are better now with Santi and Tamme backing up Clark. It's just a question of experience and how soon/much the rookies can provide. Santi is likely the #2/blocking tight end though.

Sure he will. Except for the fact that Oakland's offensive line is so horrible at pass blocking that he will often not have time to get into his route and he will often be in blocking.

I think the Texans should move up ahead of the Broncos. Daniels has been a beast these last 2 years and seeing as Crumpler might return to form hes no lock and the Broncos have been looking for a good TE since Sharp.

LOL............so true........LOL

We have the worst offense line of All-time hands down, bar none. Is that why it improved so much year giving up 30 less sacks and 6th Ranked rushing offense? Exactly how does a offensive line get worse when:
1. Playing with same QB all year as opposed to 4 different QB's
2. Replaced the worst player on the line AKA Barry sims, and sure Kwame not might be great but tom cable did draft him for his style of play in SF.
3. We have Zach miller who is a excellent blocker and in Russell's only start recorded 8 receptions
4. New and improved Runningbacks. Michael Bush, Darren McFadden anybody?
5.We get to play the chiefs twice a year, who got rid of Jared allen the only Game changer on the entire team.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! see you in september

Couple of things.

1. I'd take the AFC's top ten TE's unquestionably over anyone outside of the NFC's top 3.

2. Heath Miller. Hope the Jets fans who were so pleased that they passed on him for Doug Jolley and Mike Nugent are still happy about it. After, all, he had a "sports hernia".

3. If Chris Baker has the best hands among TE's on the Jets team, then congrats, they have wasted another first rounder on a TE.

I guess 3rd is ok for the Chiefs, even though Tony G is going to go down as the best TE of all time! (homer!)

Suck it, blowfish.

Derek Schouman will dominate for about one drive until he gets hurt for being too small and injury prone!

I know columnists rave about him, but Im not the biggest Ben Watson fan. For all his measureables, he should be so much better than he is.

Where did Kyle Brady go? I love that dude as a blocking TE. He's like another linemen on the field.

I wonder how crazy of numbers Winslow would have put up if he never broke his leg and wrecked his bike.

he'd easily be the best TE in the league if it wasn't for that.

I have him ranked #2 anyway, behind Gates.

You also passed the 4th least amount of times in the NFL. You gave up a sack every 11 pass plays. That isn't much better than the 10.23 pass plays for every sack given up by the Chiefs.

We're also not the ones who signed Kwame Harris to be our left tackle. Brian Waters is the only player starting at the same position as last years line. I would say the Chiefs did alot more for their line than the Raiders did for theirs.

As much as I hate to give credit to a division rival the Broncos have a pretty good tandem with Scheffler and Graham.

I'm fine with the Chiefs at three while Gonzo is still a beast he has not been as good in the red zone as Gates and Winslow the last few years and will have a rookie behind him.
