Default Sporting News: NFC Wide Receivers

Quote:
1. Arizona Cardinals: Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin are an outstanding pair, though the coaches want Fitzgerald to improve his routes and pick up more yards after the catch. Potential No. 3 Steve Breaston has had a good offseason.

2. Green Bay Packers: This unit should go four deep in quality players, led by Donald Driver and Greg Jennings, an emerging star. James Jones has good size and hands. Second-rounder Jordy Nelson is big (6-3) and good after the catch.

3. Detroit Lions: Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson provide height, speed, leaping ability and great hands. Johnson, who dealt with back woes as a rookie, could have a breakout year. Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey are solid backups.

4. New York Giants: With his height and reach, Plaxico Burress (6-5) is a matchup nightmare for defensive backs. Amani Toomer is entering his 13th season in superb shape. As a rookie, Steve Smith came on strong in the playoffs.

5. Dallas Cowboys: They lack a deep threat opposite Terrell Owens, whose 16.7 yards per catch average in '07 was the best of his career. They hope Miles Austin, who has excellent speed, can provide big-play ability. Patrick Crayton is an excellent slot receiver.

6. Philadelphia Eagles: Kevin Curtis (1,110 yards in '07) is one of the league's unsung No. 1 receivers. Reggie Brown sometimes disappears at key times. Rookie DeSean Jackson could give the offense a much-needed deep threat.

7. Carolina Panthers: Steve Smith is electrifying, but he needs some support and the Panthers hope big targets Muhsin Muhammad and D.J. Hackett provide it. Hackett could be a solid option over the middle but has durability issues.

8. New Orleans Saints: Marques Colston is a big target and a go-to guy in the red zone. David Patten was a pleasant surprise as the No. 2 in '07. Devery Henderson has too many drops, and Robert Meachem must rebound from a lost rookie year.

9. Atlanta Falcons: Roddy White has gone from a pass dropper to a potential Pro Bowler. Laurent Robinson exhibited speed and fearlessness as a rookie. Michael Jenkins must hold off rookie Harry Douglas for the No. 3 spot.

10. Minnesota Vikings: Newcomer Bernard Berrian has solid hands and can beat defenses over the top. Robert Ferguson and Bobby Wade had their share of drops last season. Sidney Rice made some great catches as a rookie last year.

11. St. Louis Rams: With the release of Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt still facing knee issues, this is a position in transition. Drew Bennett must step up as a starter, and rookies Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton must produce.

12. Washington Redskins: Santana Moss is a gamebreaker but has numerous health issues. Quick Antwaan Randle El is a solid No. 2. Two big rookies, Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, are the top candidates for the No. 3 and 4 slots.

13. Seattle Seahawks: There are a lot of questions to answer: Will Deion Branch (knee) be ready in Week 1? Will a contract squabble remove Bobby Engram from the equation? Will Nate Burleson be more consistent? Will any of the young guys step up?

14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Bucs have no one to complement Joey Galloway, their only home run hitter. They have high hopes for Paris Warren, who missed last season (ankle). The clock is ticking on Michael Clayton.

15. San Francisco 49ers: Newcomer Isaac Bruce knows Mike Martz's offense inside and out, but he has lost a step. Bryant Johnson is a big target with much to prove. Arnaz Battle could flourish as the No. 3.

16. Chicago Bears: Devin Hester must take a giant step forward because the Bears sorely need a playmaker. Aging Marty Booker will start, and oft-injured Mark Bradley and reclamation project Brandon Lloyd are in the mix.
http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...c.php?t=427832

I would move the Philadelphia Eagles from 6 to 9. Also I would put the Rams, and the Redskins above the Vikings.

I personally like the Cardinals and Lions WR's the most. They can dominate teams with the size they have on the outside. Of course this assuming that they are all healthy. It's too bad that the Lions QB is Kitna, bc Calvin Johnson deserves better.

I also think the Panthers are waay too low. Steve Smith is still one of the most explosive players in the game. Muhammed is a good possession guy, and Hackett should improve their WR corps. Not to mention they have Jarrett waiting in the wings if the light ever turns on for him. At least above the Eagles, maybe even the Giants or the Cowboys.

Personally I agree on the Lions I would take them over the Packers. It's close though I wouldn't argue with anyone who would prefer the Packers.

If you want an amazing duo go with the Cards if you want more depth probably go with the Packers or Lions although the Cards have added some players so there depth is better. Cards, Lions, Packers make your pick for the top 3 you cant go wrong with any of them.

The Packers have 4 #1 quality WRs and if Brett Farve comes back, that makes 5!!!

guh.....if thats anything but sarcasm boy....grr!

and of course the bears are last. i think they got jipped on the TE poll where they have good pass catchers.....i mean i know that doesn't factor into a true WR discussion but the bears aren't as bad off when it comes to a bunch of guys running down the field to catch the ball as everyone thinks

the only problem with hester is that if he has even an average season at WR while staying studly as a KR, he is going to cost a bundle more to resign than if he's just a situational WR and a stud KR.

could be the difference between just making sure he's higher paid than roscoe parrish and having to fork out Berrian type money to him....

I think it's pretty clear the top tier in the NFC, in terms of wide receivers, consists of Detroit, Arizona, and Green Bay (that's the order in which I would rank them).

After that, there's a noticable gap to the second tier imo, but I definitely put the Giants as the lead at #4.

I'm surprised the Rams are even that high. Drew Bennett was garbage last year and Burton and Avery are unproven.

Its pretty sad that the Buccaneers are being kept afloat by Joey Galloway. This isn't taking away from him at all, mind you. If he gets hurt we would be dead last.
(this is a bucs fan saying this)
