Default Hester given 4 year extension

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/footb...072708.article

It can reach up to 40 million, although much of that is based on incentives, likely what he can reach only if he becomes a star receiver. It does have 16 million in guarantees though.

It's too much money for a player I would prefer they stand the line on, but Hester also makes the Bears a ton of money through jerseys and ticket sales, so I understand. He's arguably the most popular player on the team.

Well it's not really 10 million per year. He still has two years left on his contract for less than a million, so it's really 6 years for 41 million, and that is based on a lot of incentives. It looks like a lot more than it really is.

Paying a returner almost $7 million a season is pretty insane. We've all seen how returners tend to flash for a season or two and then fade.

Who knows if he'll amount to anything at wide receiver. Sure, you can say the incentives could reduce the salary if he doesn't perform but I bet unless he doesn't play full-time at WR he'll meet most of his performance criteria.

If the Bears are willing to throw all this money at a returner, why don't they throw some money at the rest of their offense? Really, Rex Grossman AGAIN?

We'll see how it actually breaks down. As I've already said twice now, it's an incentive laden contract. Most of the money will be dependent upon his ability as a receiver, and he is currently top of the depth chart there. The Bears are not a franchise that overpays very frequently, so I don't think they are going to give it all away. The 16 million in guarantees is a bit much, but like I said, he's already made the Bears that much.

They offered Berrian about half this much, so it shows how they feel about Hester too.

You have absolutely no idea if that's true, but it seems pretty unlikely. Incentive-laden contracts usually don't have easy to reach incentives.

Neither of us can say what the incentives are. It could be he gets all his money except $500,000/year if he doesn't have 500 receiving yards a season. It could be he gets only $1,000,000/year unless he has 1000+ yards and starts 12 games at receiver. Obviously those are both extremes and not likely but I'm just saying that we have no idea on the structure or amount of money involved in the incentives so it is pointless to speculate.

Bernard Berrian for one. But there was a whole host of players available in free agency this season, just like there is every season, and the Bears did nothing to help their offense. How can they expect anything but another abysmal showing from their offensive unit based on what they've added and lost?

I like Bernard Berrian probably more than anyone, as those that have been here for a while can attest. That said, I'd much rather have Hester than Berrian. Hester won us 2-3 games in the last two years. Berrian can't, and never will, be able to say that.

There. More details.

Essentially they are giving him a lump payment of 15 million to control his rights through 2013. His base salary will probably average at 2.5 million per year, with a giant bonus that the Bears will either pay if he becomes an elite receiver, or they'll cut him and he'll never see the last 14 million or so (with contract escalators)

is he going to have to make a jersey number change since he's no longer a DB?

If he did, it would kill the Bears. I'm sure they'll fight to the death to let him keep his #23.

As far as the contract, as everyone already stated, i find it to be a bit much. You basically gave him 16 mil to stay on the team and have the chance to earn millions more, as if that wasn't enough.

These incentive laden deals never seem like too much, until somebody actually hits all of them like Fitzgerald and then your screwed for alot more money then you bargained for...I don't know why but I get the feeling at some point they are going to want him to focus more on WR and less on ST for all this money.

he could still fail to catch the game-winning TD in your next matchup against the Vikes. You never know.

Honestly nobody kicks to him anymore anyway so it doesn't matter. I think next year he's just going to out there to force teams to directional or squib kick, which will give us better field position but less opportunity for touchdown returns.

Well i really like that we got him locked up. I like the incenitives. If he hits all of them, well then he prolly deserves the money. The guaranteed is prolly a lil bit to high but its better then let him go

Good signing by the Bears. Hester is a game-changer and you gotta lock those players up.

As for the guy that said the Bears should invest their money in their offense, I think that's exactly what they just did. Hester puts points on the board from special teams and just as importantly, he constantly gets the Bears great field position. Any return he makes is equivalent to catching a 30-yard pass on offense.

Man the Bears have given out a lot of money to keep their own players this offseason.

Tommie Harris- 17-18 million guaranteed
Hester- 15 million " "
Lance Briggs- 13 million " "
Chris Williams- 9 million " "
Brian Urlacher- 6 million " "
Alex Brown- 5.5 million " "
Robbie Gould- 4.15 million (split in half between '08 and '09)
Des Clark- 2 million " "

The base salaries are actually pretty low if you look at the contracts (except for Urlacher who was given an extension that looks a lot better than it really is), so the money will still spread out pretty evenly, but you really can't call the Bears cheap anymore. They reward their own.
