McGahee out 2-4 weeks with knee surgery
Quote:
McGahee to have surgery
By Aaron Wilson, Times Staff Writer
Baltimore Ravens star running back Willis McGahee is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee as soon as today in South Florida.
McGahee's knee has been bothering him since shortly after reporting to training camp in Westminster, and he hasn't been practicing lately. This is regarded as a clean-up medical procedure.
Because it generally takes two weeks to a month to recover from a knee scope, McGahee could possibly return for the Sept. 7 season-opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The surgery will be performed at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, Fla., near the University of Miami campus. It's the same hospital that surgically repaired his left knee after a devastating injury in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl where he tore nearly every ligament.
McGahee was held out of the Ravens' victory over the New England Patriots last week.
Heading into that preseason opener, Ravens coach John Harbaugh expressed hope that McGahee would be able to return soon.
"We decided to take about a week and work the knee, strengthen it, get the swelling down and get him back after the game," Harbaugh said.
Although rookie runner Ray Rice has been impressive and started in McGahee's place against the Patriots, the Ravens don't currently plan to increase his role beyond a complementary presence when McGahee returns.
"Willis is our back, no question," Harbaugh said. "You need at least two good backs to get through an NFL season."
Rice gained a dozen yards on six carries with four receptions for 17 yards against New England, figures to remain the starter and get the most repetitions in practice while McGahee out.
"I'm looking forward to his return to see how good a duo we could be," Rice said of McGahee.
The surgery marks another setback for McGahee, a Pro Bowl alternate last season who rushed for 1,207 yards and seven touchdowns.
He didn't spend much time at the Ravens' training complex this offseason and reported to camp at 236 pounds, four over his listed playing weight. He attended just one mandatory minicamp and another voluntary minicamp, skipping the rest of the workouts as a new offense was installed.
McGahee acknowledged that he could have reported in better condition and have better knowledge of the playbook.
"It could get better," McGahee said when he reported. "That's what training camp is for. I know I'm rusty. I know I'm not going to come to training camp and be on point. That's hard, and I've got to work to that level."
Running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery noted early in camp that it would take time before McGahee would be completely up to speed.
"He's got to learn what we're doing," Montgomery said. "The offseason program that we implemented here, they can't make it mandatory that you be here, but you need to be here to learn what's going on. Willis wasn't here, so he's playing catch-up. You have to be in great shape in this offense.
"Right now, he's going to struggle a little bit until he understands what we're asking him to do. If he wasn't the athlete that we all know he is, it would be frustrating. It still is kind of frustrating because we're trying to teach him and it's just not coming as fast as you would like it to, but you know it will come."

Why couldn't he get the scope earlier in the offseason?

Rice is still a project, and certainly not a three down back yet. At the least however, this basically assures Cory Ross a roster spot. But we need Willis back with us ASAP. Two undersized RBs as our first and second strings could prove to be a problem.

I have been disappointed with the stories of how lazy he was during the offseason and showed up to camp out of shape. To me he is work ethic away from being an elite level back but his laziness and lack of conditioning is why he can't break those runs or get that extra yard, because the talent is there. I know he worked real hard in rehab before he got to the NFL but I noticed even since his first year in Buffalo he has never really committed to an offseason workout plan and come back stronger.

He probably didnt work hard because he knows we suck. Just like he knows Buffalo sucks. We will wait and see.

As someone who has gone through a major knee surgery, although not to the extent of Willis' but still major reconstruction of the patella and all cartilage, its always in the back of your mind and can and will limit you. I agree with STRIP that he needs to dedicate himself moreso during the offseason and that his limitations are on the mental side. One would think with him being the feature back of a predominantly running offense and signing a big contract would be enough though......

Insteadof givin up alot for a player with character concerns, we sho0uld have given up more to get a better RB who does not have character concerns in Michael Turner. Not like it mattered who ran the ball for us, Im pretty sure we could have gone 5-11 with Musa Smith runnin the ball.

I dont necessarily agree with it, but don't act as if McGahee is some great RB, he isn't even top 15 in the NFL IMO.

Rice will be the full fledged starter by around week 10. Any chance he gets with Willis out or sucking he'll take full advantage of. This Ross kid seems pretty good. He and Rice look to be a nice backfield ofthe future, with Rice the stud.

I love McGahee as a player. Hearing his work ethic is bad is disappointing, but he is so talented.

yea I became a semi Miami fan because of Ray Lewis, and when I saw McGahee I would have done anything to get him.
And scotty, Ross is nothing more but a change of pace back.

but his speed and change of pace ability is a nice compliment to Rice. Still, Rice will be a stud for you guys, especially if/when McGahee's glass knees break again
