TCU, as a head coaching job, is not a step down from Michigan. Nobody that is serious, could seriously think that.

TCU is great because they are well-coached. Michigan is mediocre because they are poorly coached. The head coaching position at Michigan is still a top 10-15 position in college football.

Best team and recruiting base in the Mountain West or Michigan, which is in the middle of the pack right now in terms of where their program is behind Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan State (their instate competition), and coming soon... Nebraska.

I don't see why Patterson would want to go there right now.

In fact, I'll rank them (my opinion, of course, but not without some legit information behind it)

1) University of Southern California- sanctions hurt now, but Southern California is your backyard.

2) Texas- #1 team in the #1 state for football.

3) Oklahoma- one of the best historical programs in football. Can recruit Texas with ease.

4) Ohio State- great tradition, facilities, support, recruiting base, etc.

5) Alabama- Arguably the best SEC program. Solid state to recruit in, lots of financial support.

6) Miami (Fl)
7) Florida State
8) Florida
9) Notre Dame
10) Georgia
11) Penn State
12) LSU
13) Michigan
14) Nebraska
15) Texas A&M

Define "where there program is", if you're basing it on wins and losses then you are taking an incredibly myopic view of the situation. A coach isn't going to care what the record of the guy before him was, he's going to care if there is a system in place to win games.

It's a hell of a lot easier to win at Michigan than it is at Iowa, Wisconsin, or Michigan State. That they haven't just shows what a failure Rodriguez has been.

Notre Dame #6? Ha. This generation's players do not care.

I'd put Oregon somewhere in that list.

People keep saying that, but Charlie Weis had no problem having top recruiting classes. I did slip them behind the 3 Florida schools, however.

Were they top recruiting classes or were they top recruiting classes because they were going to Notre Dame?

They were top recruiting classes. Weis regularly handed people their asses on the recruiting trail.

Yeah Weiss brought in some great talent, they just didnt perform well on the field. Notre Dame will always get great talent.

But i agree with Bearsfan with the fact that Michigan is still a top 15 job in college football. The tradition and the reputation Michigan has will always have them in the back of elite recruits minds. If they get the right coach/coaches they will most definitely have the right players to do it with.

I might be getting to the point where i would have Oregon as a top 15 job.

Prolly the best facilities in the country, Nike is a huge recruiting ploy, good coaching, great fans, etc. Going to become a very attractive program.

Yeah Oregon is a pretty good point. Also, other than the USC there is no dominant program in the conference. Oregon and Tennessee were my next two.

Michigan's program is in such disarray that they quite possibly will have an equal class than tOSU... i hate you wonderbredd24.

While I don't know who tOSU has left to pick-up. If they were to stay pretty much stagnant, then Michigan would have a shot.

If Michigan got Watkins, Frost, Countess and Zettel then they would be pretty close. Then they would just need to get lucky with one or two out of: Wayne Lyons, Kevin McReynolds, Doran Grant, Chris Bryant, Avery Walls, Cyrus Hobbi, Darian Cooper, or Tim Jernigan.

Here are my guesses:

Fired
1) Ron English- Eastern Michigan
2) Bill Lynch- Indiana
3) Ricky Bustle- Louisiana Lafayette
4) Mike Locksley- New Mexico
5) Bob Toledo- Tulane
6) Neil Callaway- UAB
7) Paul Wulff- Washington State
8) Stan Parrish- Ball State

Saved
1) Rich Rodriguez- Michigan (although I disagree)
2) Mark Richt- Georgia (could go either way here honestly)
3) Dennis Erickson- Arizona State
4) Mack Brown- Texas
5) Houston Nutt- Mississippi
6) Rick Neuheisel- UCLA
7) Ron Zook- Illinois

I could make a case for all of them though, except for maybe Mack Brown.

you can put Mike Sherman on that saved list.

Ryan Tannehill and Tim DeRuyter saved his ass this year.

Those in bold should NOT be saved imho.

Quote:
Saved
1) Rich Rodriguez- Michigan (although I disagree) <-- Michigan supplied other programs with skill players via transfer, s/b the other way around
2) Mark Richt- Georgia (could go either way here honestly) <-- 11 UGA players on the police blotter from this Christian zealot HC, what's wrong with that picture?
3) Dennis Erickson- Arizona State
4) Mack Brown- Texas <-- He's a CEO, not a HC.
5) Houston Nutt- Mississippi <-- s/b fired just for overlooking Div. II-A school upset
6) Rick Neuheisel- UCLA
7) Ron Zook- Illinois
Of those no one is more of a game day liability than Mack Brown, he has no strategic value on a sideline. Oh yeah he talks a good game, is a terrific recruiter & is a natural politician, he lobbied AP Poll voters for Texas #1 a few yrs back with 3 AM phone calls. But did any major iconic national juggernaut program disappoint more or suffer deterioration in talent level than Texas this yr?

If Texas had any sense they would put him out to Bevolike pasture as AD, hire Gary Patterson from TCU by throwing gazillions at him, retain Muschamp to run the defense & let Major Applewhite run the offense, but won't happen. Both those assts. have HC ambitions of their own (watch UGA try to hire Bulldog alum Muschamp after Richt goes away), & the Board of Regents would have to admit their mistake in hiring Brown from UNC in the 1st place. Lots of deep, multi-generational pride in those Regents, but another embarrassing yr like this one & it could happen.

Michigan supplied other programs with skill players via transfer, s/b the other way around
Not defending Rodriguez, but when was the last time a player transferred TO Michigan for football, be it under Rodriguez, Carr or anyone else? The only one I can remember was Grant Mason, a CB from Stanford and he wasn't exactly a beacon of football skill.

Why, exactly, would Texas get rid of their current athletic director?

If Mack gets fired this year the job is going to Muschamp....Patterson wouldnt be in the conversation unless Muschamp happened to go to Georgia.

Well, Watkins just commited to Clemson, so that's one down. Frost probably has Auburn as a leader, and I doubt he comes to Michigan once we go 7-6 and Auburn plays in the NCG. Sam Webb has written an article implying that he'll likely cool on Michigan.

I'd say Zettel's love for Michigan might not even be enough to get him to Michigan after three bad seasons if he thinks Rod could be fired after next year. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see him end up at Iowa.

So far two 4 stars and ten 3 stars. Hooray for recruiting like he's still at West Virginia!

A few Gopher sources are reporting that the top candidates are considered to be:

1) Brady Hoke
2) Troy Calhoun
3) Al Golden

In that order. Kevin Sumlin is now considered not to be a good bet, although he, along with Hoke, is getting a lot of buzz for the Colorado job.

I respect the **** out of Kevin Sumlin. Dude has a great grasp on TX recruiting and would take a great coaching staff with him.

It's surprising to me he didn't catch on, as he used to coach at Minnesota.

My guess is that they didn't want to run the spread again after the Brewster failure.
