Joey Porter
What can you guys tell me about him. Why was he released, was it money problems or playing problems?

He wasn't playing up to his contract and he still wanted to hold out for more. Whoever gets him is going to have to overpay.

He was our best linebacker since Lloyd and we let him go. You will be getting a great ballplayer if you sign him. He had a down year with us, yet he still led us in sacks and had 2 int's, one returned for a TD. It will come back and haunt us. We didn't want to pay him more, but we tendered contracts to Starks and St. Pierre. I'm not big on our front office right now.

Give up on it, jesus. He wasn't all sunshine either. Even after the $1 Million bonus he was going to hold out of camp and the last thing you want to do is bring a new coaching staff to deal with the old staff's headcases. It was a good move. He was a good player, but it's still a business get over it.

Believe it or not you need to have enough money to pay 53 guys to be on the roster. You can't just say he is good and pay him whatever he wants. The cap will never work with moves like that.

Past him prime can still be very solid, he doesn't warrant the money, his body has gone through too much trauma it really pisses me off how every on on espn is saying how big of a mistake the steelers made by letting him go.
I think he will go to the niners

Just because somebody doesn't agree with you doesn't make you right. Chill out bro. Your not the all knowing Guru on this site. You think it's a good move and I along with the whole Steeler nation besides the kids on this site think it was a horrible move. Yes I know it's a business, but we have plenty of other guys we could stand to lose besides him. It was also no gimme that he was gonna hold out. Just because you don't like him doesn't mean it was smart. He was our best linebacker.

what? farrior does not cost more at all
haggans doesnt cost as much, and the main thing is, is that porter woulda held out and thus forcing our hand to pay him or cut him then, this way its on the offices terms
just gice it up, cuting porter was a good economical move
football is a business at the end of the day and the steelers had to make the right business move

Is it me or is it asinine to tell me I'm not the all knowing Guru and then say "I along with the WHOLE Steelers nation besides kids on this site think it was a crappy Move"?
Here's the skinny. It wasn't a great move in the fact we had to lose Porter. However I'm on Steelers scout forum, My forums and this forum and frankly your one of very few people that research the draft and is a steelers fan.
There's really 3 types of Steeler fans.
1) Bandwagon fans (Eww) - The fans that cheer and watch Steelers only during good years.
2) Solid Followers - Fans that follow the Team regardless of season, but know very little about the FA moves/Trades/Draft
3) Fanatics - Follow the Team regardless, Live breathe and sleep Steelers and follow everything.
We fall under fanatics. I'd say 75% are Solid Followers, 15% bandwagon and 10% Fanatics.
Ok, So you can have the 90% of Steelers fans that don't understand the cap or things involved with offseason info.
I will say this, Porter was our best Linebacker, But.. Unfortunately for your theory there is 10 other players on the Field with Mr. Porter that need to be paid and under the cap as well.
Were you this upset when Cowher took over? At that time our Best LB was Huey Richardson, what was the Steelers first move during the Cowher Regime? Cutting Huey.
Who else could we cut? Haggans? Gardocki? I mean, Porter was the highest paid Defensive player... his contract only outweighed by Marvel Smith.. yea, 2nd highest paid player on the team. We could have cut Joey... or .. practically the entire defense.
It was a lose-lose situation.
We keep Porter, We have a diminishing OLB and we can't afford a combination of Ben/Troy/Aaron Smith/Marvel Smith/Alan Faneca/Chris Hoke/Chris Komeatu/Trai Essex/Dan Kreider.
We Cut Porter, we lose him and his salary.
Now,
Had you read into or studied any of the issues behind it, you would know what the heck was going on.
1) We cut Porter to allow him to go to the team of his choice. We were getting trade calls from NYJ, SF, CIN, NE, and 2 other teams (Can't remember, I believe it was STL, and Cle). But instead of Forcing him, because of the type of Front office we have (Which you should study up on, watch the Steelers Dynasty DVD.) Instead of keeping him and sending him to somewhere where he'd be miserable we cut him. He even talked to reporters. He stated he was bummed, but he's very greatful for the opportunity we gave him.
2) You have the teams defensive co-captain, who wants a big payday, after a bad season, and it's basically his last contract (likely due to age). He wants to be paid in the top 5 OLB's area. I loved Porter. I had a Pro-bowl Jersey, Black, White steelers and a Game-Worn Jersey which he autographed. Since we drafted him and he started taking shape as a player I was a huge fan. But we're talking a lot of money. Now, if he was putting up Pro-bowl #'s and was Younger? Fine, but it was not financially viable to do what he wanted.
3)"It was no gimme that he was going to holdout". Yes it was, he had stated earlier that he was going to hold out unless he got the big payday. What a great way to invite a new coaching staff in to have a player acting like a headcase over a payday he's not worth.
4) I stated Earlier that I loved him, I loved the intensity, ferocity, and Attitude he brought to Pittsburgh. I thought he was a great motivator. But I thought the same thing of Gildon and look what happened after we gave him that last big payday? He didn't even pass the Bills physical.
5) I'm not an all knowing Guru, but I hate when people say things that they really have no understanding about it. I can read headlines as well and form opinions, but once you start going into depth, will you ever understand whats going on. You limit yourself to one train of thought and you won't be able to think without bias. Thats a horrible thing. You have to be open. What would you do if we payed Porter. Had to lose Ben and Troy and Then Porter broke his neck? Likely wouldn't happen, but would you be upset at the FO because we lost troy and Ben and should've cut 8 other players? I mean, you can't have it all.

Like Who? Your previous post mentioned Haggans and DeShea. I'll tell you this, For the fact that they're both Starters and Veterans. They're making near league minimum. Probably $1m over league minimum (Which puts them near 1.5-2M ea.) now, Porter wanted paid, near the cost of 3 DeSheas and Clarks. Think about it.
You have Faneca, Marvel Smith, Aaron Smith (Just resigned), Ben, Troy all coming into contract years in the next 2 years. How on earth would that have been feasible?
DeShea and Haggans are veterans, but there's little depth or lack of experience at their positions, but once there is, don't be surprised to see them as cap casualties either.

Just thought you guys might want this to sit in the back of your mind as well.
Joey Porter is the best player left on the FA market.
SF and NYJ might be the only players for him.
BUT!..
However small a chance. Porter might be going around to different teams and realizing his heart is in Pittsburgh. Like I said, Small and Unlikely chance, BUT, he isn't signed yet, so don't think that all hope is lost, he could end up coming back and taking a "Hometeam" Discount.

yeah and since SF is looking like they are gonna sign banta cain, that pretty much eliminates porter, since lawson has the other OLB spot
edit, looks like we are looking at TBC also :

I wouldn't either, if we didn't get Spencer in 1/2.
