The state just doesn't have the money right now to pay for the Vikings' new stadium. If we are going to stay in Minnesota, the Wilf's just have to fork over more money and stop being so god damn cheap.

Even the most mega-rich of owners rarely has the kind of change on hand it would take to fund the building of a half-billion to a billion dollar stadium.

The state needs to realize just how much money it would lose in the long run not having a professional football team there and work something out.

If they don't, there are some folks in LA who are already building a stadium I believe but who currently lack a team...

How much money would they lose? Most data suggests that public funding for stadiums is a really awful financial investment.

This isn't going away is it? The Vikings need a new stadium pretty badly and LA is all too happy the accommodate them. If it does happen, it's a Browns situation probably. LA Vikings just does not sound right at all. Neither do the LA Lakers, but still.

This is one hundred percent true i was just about to post this.

Owners have convinced states that it is a worthy investment so that they dont have to pay for the stadiums alone. In reality, building a new stadium has very little benefit to the tax payers, and certainly not enough to warrant the amount that the states invest in new stadiums.

I'd think the only way this would get done would be to build a retractable roof stadium. I realize this is less than ideal for those who want an outdoor stadium (And more expensive), but at least then they could pitch for big events (Final Fours, Super Bowls, concerts, Wrestlemania's) and use it more than the 10 times a year it would be otherwise.

We already have an NBA arena and an NHL arena that can host 3 of those 4 things. The extra 400+ million for a retractable roof stadium could be spent to fly everyone down to Miami to watch the Superbowl there.

Probably AEG, The people who re worked the Staples Center Area. I think their new stadium plans make it a convention center and will be able to hold concerts and Final Fours so it could be profitable even without an LA based NFL team.

If Minny does get a new stadium w/retractable roof, they should make sure the field is built to handle precipitation so it can actually be open for more than 1-2 games per year.

Can someone give a definitive statement on the most likely outcome, or at least rank the likely outcomes?

Well if they can get the private money to do it, more power to them. The state of Minnesota is dead broke, has four sports teams, and a major university.

The Vikings could have chosen to build a stadium in the suburbs about 5 years ago. They dragged their feet because they wanted to stay in Minneapolis. Then they got jumped by the Twins and the Gophers because their demands and asking price were too high.

Ziggy Wilf has shown no leadership on this issue at all, simply holding out Los Angeles as a carrot to scare Minnesotan's into doing whatever he wants. The problem for him (I think) is that Minnesotans are pretty smart people, and the current national mood is against public funding for anything, let alone a sports stadium.

Plus, the Vikings aren't even that popular, and this is a fairweather state.

It's probably the most likely that the politicians will fold and find a way to fund it. Probably with new local sales taxes and a general spending tax across the state, (or at least the metro where most of the money is anyway).

That's the irony of this. If there was a public vote it would likely fail. However, no politician wants to be remembered for "allowing" the Vikings to leave.

Then again, Minnesota has lost an NBA and an NHL franchise before, only to get an expansion team later.

The Jags have never been a serious contendor to relocate, no matter how much the ignorant talking heads keep trying to bring them up.

No NFL team has ever relocated because of attendance issues. Ever. In the history of the sport. Not only that, but they're locked into their stadium lease at Everbank until 2030.

You know why teams relocate? Because other cities build them fancy new stadiums.

And yes, the AEG group plans on providing private funding for the stadium. Only thing is that Roski wants to be a minority owner for whatever team is playing in his building.

As far as the most likely scenario goes, I think it's still:

1. Chargers
2. Vikings

The Raiders are a candidate, but they'll probably end up sharing a stadium with the 49ers in Santa Clara.

And of course the wildcard is the Rams. But I have no idea what their situation is regarding their new owner and trying to get a stadium.

I don't want them to move.

A. I want my home state to have a football team no matter how much they suck.

B. I DON'T WANT THE RAMS TO GET REGULATED TO ANOTHER DIVISION. I like being in the West.

Well if they can get the private money to do it, more power to them. The state of Minnesota is dead broke.....
Isn't the state of California even more dead broke though?
Like filing for bankruptcy broke?

Me personally, I can picture the purple & yellow Vikings in LA, just like the purple and yellow Lakers they stole away from the State of Lakes.

The California stadium is privately funded.

California is dead broke, but these stadium announcements that keep being made are from people who keep talking about privately financing the stadiums and doing it themselves.

There are 2 sites being discussed for stadiums in the LA area.

One is based in the City of Industry, which is about 15 miles east of LA. Ed Roski, one of the guys who helped build Staples Center and a minority owner in the Staples Center teams (except the Clippers), already owns the land and has done the environmental/financial studies that usually are the big roadblock to construction. Now he needs to find a team to build. Who knows whether he'll build first and look for a team or vice versa.

The other proposed site is next to the Staples Center in downtown LA, where they will tear down part of the Convention Center to make space for it. The group behind this is the group that built the Staples Center, AEG. They have done none of the environmental studies/handling of the initial legwork because the main financier is based in Denver and won't commit money until a team commits to them.

Either way, for LA, its a different proposition than it is for Minnesota. The LA stadium can potentially host hundreds of events a year, which would be a stretch for the Minneapolis market.

With Roski, from what I can remember reading, he plans to build the stadium whether he has a team or not. If he gets it built and can't convince someone to move in, he'll likely push for an expansion team.
