This doesn't mean the Jaguars won't draft an LT: Tra might be something of a stop gap.

Good move, tho

What the heck are the Eagles going to do to solidify their line and get depth for it? I wonder what McNabb is thinking as he sees guys leave that team. He will bring some experience to that line for the Jags, but they better think long term and draft someone soon.

Nice temporary plug. Should allow them to bypass OT in the first round now.

Im about to copy and paste what I said in the Free Agency thread. I think the Jags see opputunity at other positions to build depth and get young at other than T that will provide a more immediate impact. They have shown they have the talent to make it to the playoffs. Thomas provides the luxury, if you can call it that, to avoid a reach on Andre Smith or Michael Oher at this point (assuming Jason Smith and Monroe are picked); unless they are drafting them to play RT.1

Agreed, he'll be solid for you guys for at least this year, but after that, don't expect much out of him. He's still a good pass blocker, but isn't all that good in the run game nowadays. Going up against smaller DEs in Indy's scheme might help him for those games, but expect him to struggle against Mario, but who doesn't? I still would expect a LT either this year or next to groom under him, as that would be a good idea for the Jags...

Would you really want to bypass a chance at a franchise LT for a mere stopgap, though?

We already have really good depth on the interior, and since Herremans is now looking to be our LT, it was wise of the Eagles to let him go. We already have the guys to fill his spot, whether it be Max Jean-Gilles or Nick Cole or Mike McGlynn. Our interior depth is just about as good as anybodies in the league, I would imagine, and since Herremans can play either Tackles, and Shawn could play RT, there already is a lot of depth along the OL.

This is what our OL looks like now, or something very close to it:
LT: Herremans, Dunlap
LG: Jean-Gilles, McGlynn
C: Jackson, Cole
RG: Sh. Andrews, Gibson
RT: St. Andrews, Justice

The bolded guys are ones that either haven't started or have only started a little bit, but the coaching staff really likes. Both MJG and Cole have shown they can start and be very good, and McGlynn is a mid round pick from last year who has looked promising. All the bolded guys are either starting calibur depth or very good options in case of injury. (MJG and Cole are the starting calibur, maybe even McGlynn) Our OL is pretty full already, and perhaps may not be addressed until later. I could also see LT being addressed early though and throwing this all out of whack. Also keep in mind Stacey can play LG and Shawn could be the RT, putting MJG at RG. Our linemen are also very versatile as well, which also helps for depth purposes.

The only concern is if Herremans can be successful there. Now I know it was the preseason, but he neutralized Julius Peppers this year at LT and he is actually better suited as a Tackle than Guard anyway. I personally think the Eagles should take a LT anyway if a top one falls into range, but Herremans will be solid there.

Sorry this is so long, I didn't intend for it, I just went off on a tangent I guess. I love linemen!:D

I disagree. I still have them going that way in my mock I'm working on atm. (It should be noted that there, Raji and Crabtree are both unavailable though.)

I really think Thomas is only a stop gap that they wanted to sign just in case the draft didn't fall in a way to get them their LT.

It's not like Thomas' deal is some earth shattering contract, if a rookie comes in and beats him out he could probably ride the bench with that and be a nice reserve.

This signing is good. It means we aren't obligated to go with a tackle at pick 8 even if he's not the BAP. That doesn't mean we'll neglect the position, though--- our depth at o-line is mediocre at best.

BJ Raji just went to the top of my board (of players that might reach us).

Instead of picking a guy like Andre Smith at 8, we might look at a guy in the early second like Eben Britton or William Beatty. Both are big-time athletes who are a bit raw, and whoever we select in the draft, he'll have time to season while Tra holds down the fort.

Believe me you will not like Tra soon. Prior to this past season he was looking like he was done. He is not the best run blocker so don't expect to see him opening up holes for MJD. He is a good pass rusher but not against bigger, every down ends. He did extremely well against DeMarcus Ware, Andre Carter and smaller rushers but when he faces guys like Jared Allen he breaks down (see the playoff game).

He will do good against the likes of Dwight Freeney but expect monster games from Mario Williams, because Mario Williams is better than Allen and Thomas got beat numerous times.

The Jags also have to deal with the fact that he usually gets injured. They should still take a LT early (Round 2-3) because they don't have a shot at the top tackles in Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith. Get a guy like Beatty, Kropog, Meredith etc. etc.
