3-3-5 works when you have the players for it

see wvu last year---35th in total d, 9th in scoring

it's essentially a 3-4, with a safety (we use 3; 2 corners) that plays in the box 90% of the time

Yeah. The Michigan base defense looks a little like this...

3 down linemen- Ryan Van Bergen/Mike Martin/Brandon Graham
"Spinner" DE/OLB Hybrid- Brandon Herron
2 linebackers- J.B Fitzgerald/Obi Ezeh
SS/OLB Hybrid- Stevie Brown
FS- Troy Woolfolk
SS- Vlad Emilien
CB- Donovan Warren
CB- Boubacar Cissoko

That's for right now though. Starting WLB Jonas Mouton will have to be factored in when he returns from injury.

The big debate in Los Angelos is who will start at QB for the Trojans. Barkely is really coming on and no doubt has the biggest upside of the 3 guys there (Mustain and Corp) but do you want to start a freshman QB. I think the dilema for Pete is if you dont play Barkely and one of the other guys does well what do you do next year. Highly unlikely a Matt Barkely ,who porobably projects to the next Carson Palmer, sits for 2 years.

Here's how things are looking for Ole Miss:

QB: Jevan Snead
RB: Brandon Bolden
FB: Andy Hartmann
WR: Shay Hodge
WR: Dexter McCluster
TE: Gerald Harris
LT: Bradley Sowell
LG: Reid Neely
C: Daverin Geralds
RG: Rishaw Johnson
RT: John Jerry

Snead has looked great, but there is a battle going on for the backup job between senior Billy Tapp and RS freshman Nathan Stanley. Stanley has been very impressive in camp and is really pushing to take the #2 spot away from Tapp. Tapp, a converted TE, is a guy that Nutt has a lot of confidence in to play in spot situations because he is smart and very athletic but his arm leaves something to be desired. We signed Raymond Cotton and he will arrive in the summer. Cotton was a big time recruit and is very athletic with a big arm, but he is raw. He will get to learn behind Snead for at least a year.

There is a big battle for the starting RB spot going on between Bolden, Enrique Davis, and Cordera Eason. Bolden is looking very good but Davis has really come on strong, Nutt has been very happy with Davis. Eason, the senior, had his moments but is still having some trouble holding on to the ball. McCluster is still getting his touches running the ball, and he really is the key to our offense. We looked lost when he missed practice one day last week which is not good. Sophmore Devin Thomas has looked pretty expolsive at RB, he was a former HS AA in the sc at back mold who people seem to forget about since we also signed Bolden and Davis in that class. We signed a bunch of backs this class with Rodney Scott, Tim Simon, Gabriel Hunter, and Korvic Neat all set to arrive in the summer. Neat is in the McCluster mold, and we need another guy like Dex since he is entering his final season.

Shay Hodge is the #1 wideout with Dex working in his slot RB/WR role still. We lost Mike Wallace so we are in need of a deep threat/KR. Lionel Breaux looks to be the leading candidate to fill Wallace's role. Breaux is a burner with size similar to Wallace (about 6-0 200), but he has been somewhat inconsistent. He dropped a sure touchdown one play then had a 38 yard TD run the next during a recent practice. Markeith Summers looks very solid, he is a great blocking receiver and has good size (6-2 200) and athleticism. His hands are solid too, he is still just a little raw. Sophmore Andrew Harris is another great talent who is raw, but Nutt has been raving about him. Everyone can't wait for HS AA Patrick Patterson to arrive, he should make an impact this fall. He is a big, athletic target who has super hands. Gerald Harris is the starting TE, he had a breakout game in the Cotton Bowl where he had 2 TDs. He is a blocker primarily, but he has some athleticism and has the potential to make an impact in the passing game. There are very high expectations for signee Zaccheus Mason at TE, he was a top basketball recruit who just started playing football. He is a freakish athlete at 6-6 250 but is extremely raw. He played QB and WR in a wildcat type offense in high school.

The OL is starting to gel a little bit, but it is clear that there is a lot of anticipation for Bobby Massie to arrive. It seems that Sowell is not the answer at LT for Oher. Rishaw Johnson has a ton of talent at RG but he still needs some work, the staff is excited about him. Geralds, Jerry, and Neely all have starting experience and will need to provide leadership since we will be starting two linemen who have never started an SEC game before.

RE: Kentrell Lockett
NT: Ted Laurent
UT: Lawon Scott
LE: Marcus Tillman
SLB: Allen Walker
MLB: Jonathan Cornell
WLB: Patrick Trahan
CB: Marshay Green
CB: Cassius Vaughn
FS: Kendrick Lewis
SS: Johnny Brown

"The Landsharks" should be one of the nation's best defensive lines this year. Greg Hardy still has a boot on from his foot surgery, we need him healthy. Hardy had an injury riddled junior year, but when he is healthy he is a true impact player. We are in great shape at DE regardless with Tillman and Lockett. Tillman is a 4 year starter in the Justin Tuck mold, he is big, consistent, and super athletic and plays left end but will shift inside to DT on occasion. Lockett is long and athletic (6-5 245) and really took his game to the next level last year after he blocked the extra point against Florida. It sucks that Peria Jerry is gone, he was a stud for us and the heart and sould of our team, but we still look very solid at DT. The starters will be Ted Laurent and Lawon Scott with Jerrell Powe behind them. Powe is down to about 325 pounds, 20 less than last year. Everyone is expecting big things from Jerrell this year. Freshman early enrollee Craig Drummond looks like he could be our next stud DE, Nutt has raved about his ability but he is another raw player. He should benefit greatly from graduating in December and already suiting up with the team.

We have some real speed at linebacker. Patrick Trahan has been getting rave reviews from the staff, he is incredibly gifted. He finished off last season with a safety on Graham Harrell in the Cotton Bowl. The coaches said he looked lost last season but is starting to understand the defense now, if he gets everything together then he could be scary good. Jonathan Cornell is the starter inside and he has some high expectations. He was a big time recruit who has been hurt, but he is healthy and has a starting job. Allen Walker is the SLB, he is only about 6-1 215 but he is a super athlete. He improved a lot as the year went on last year and showed he can be a real playmaker. RS freshman Jason Jones has been very impressive thusfar, he should be playing a lot this year.

Kendrick Lewis is the leader of the secondary at free safety, he had a great season last year and will be the leader of the defense. We lost SS JaMarca Sanford to graduation, Sanford was great against the run but offered little in coverage (was essentially a linebacker). Junior Johnny Brown looks to take Sanford's spot, he has some experience and actually played over Lewis at FS as a true freshman. Fon Ingram will back up both safety spots, he is a very good special teamer but got into some trouble last year so we didn't get to see too much of him on defense. Signee Jamar Hornsby was expected to make an impact at safety but has some legal issues and his status is up in the air. We signed Tig Barksdale too, he looks to be a SS but he needs to qualify first. Grades are an issue with him. At corner, Marshay Green is a cocky playmaker and is also our PR. He is undersized but is a great athlete and a converted WR with great hands/ball skills. Cassius Vaughn will start opposite Green, he matched up against Crabtree in the Cotton Bowl and did very well against him. He is a physical corner but is somewhat inexperienced. UCLA transfer Jeremy McGee is a converted RB who is vying for the nickleback spot, he is raw but talented. Marcus Temple will be competing with McGee for the #3 spot, he isn't very big or fast but he is a tough, high effort player. He stuffed Tebow to seal the win over Florida last year.

There is a lot of excitement over this team, Nutt made us a legitimate contender after being the laughing stock of the SEC. Snead will be in the spotlight this season and will lead the offense, and the defense is ridiculously athletic. There are two big questions, however. The first is left tackle, a lot is resting on the big shoulders of Bobby Massie. The other concern is if the team can handle the expecations and the exposure, something that Ole Miss' has not had since Eli Manning was here.

Yeah Trahan transfered from Auburn to JUCO then signed with Ole Miss, he will be a senior next season. Enrique signed with Auburn out of HS but didn't qualify then went to Hargrave and signed with Ole Miss, he will be a sophmore next season.

Really? Wow, what a disaster it has been for this kid. From being the starting QB for Notre Dame to a linebacker(most likely backup?) at Cincinatti.

Just my take here, i don't think you get Matt Barkely to commit if that is the route he has to go. Granted he's there and his leverage is gone but you then dont get the next Matt Barkely. These guys are looking at getting to the NFL in 3 years not spending two years on the bench.

barkley will redshirt, he said he knew coming to usc that it was very likely he would, he was ok with it because usc gives him the chance to be great.

So a kid comes in mid-term and gets a majority of the reps in scrimmages so he can redshirt, real confidence booster for all involved.

he gets the majority of the reps?
he no corp has has 123 pass attempts, mustain has had 107 pass attempts and barkley has had 125 pass attempts.
The coaches know what Corp and Mustain can do, they need to see Barkley.
Corp is the definite starter

I thought Barkely had the most action in their last scrimmage. You may be right about the redshirt but seems they're going about it in a strange way.

They've got Doug Nussmeier there to be the QB coach (or Jake's coach if you will) so it will be interesting to see how he progresses. Problem i saw at the saturday scrimmage is the offensive line looks brutal.

they finally realized he was fast so he will be used like a mix between Tebow and Pat White supposedly at times. Our D line is pretty solid so that could be the reason the O-Line looked brutal. Or maybe it was the fact that we never recruited any stud OL when Ty was there. (Juan Garcia is the only one I can think of, and he was a RS Senior this year, so I don't know)

I think he's going to still be in a pro style formation there and he's so valuable i think they will discourage set running plays.

As for the O-line they used to get all the big stud linemen from around the northwest for decades and then they started to drift off to places like Michigan and the dreaded Oregon schools. this coaching staff will get the most out of them but talent wise they arent there.

quick spring game observations:

1. jarrett brown has a gun; better arm than pat white
2. wes lyons is the real deal; 2 tds; about 5 other catches
3. devine didnt play much; had about 4 carries; 1 was a 75 yd td
4. coley white (pats bro) will have to change positions in the spring; didnt look good (granted it was 1s vs 2s), but he has a very weak arm

Julio Jones looks even bigger and better than he did last season.

and Star Jackson so far has been unimpressive.
