And according to "several 49ers staffers" that spoke privately to ESPN this week, Crabtree reportedly enjoyed "very good practices" during San Francisco's bye week.

The plan is for Crabtree to play 12-15 snaps, mostly at slot receiver, when the 49ers return from the bye to play Houston.

Hopefully Crabtree can make an immediate impact, we could use a boost in the passing game. Facing a weak Houston secondary is a perfect opportunity for Crabtree to shine.

The bad taste of the Atlanta drubbing lingers around this team, every team has a stinker game in it, let's hope they can chalk that one up to lessons learned.

New blood pumping in the system from Crabtree in a 9er uni & Gore returning on offense, defense has to stop Schaub's big arm, s/b a good one.

Shaub is on fire right now, and it'd be a statement and a big confidence builder to slow him down and win a tough one on the road. The Niners cannot have a bad start and get down in this game or it'll be over quickly.

Scratch the 12-15 snaps in the slot idea- Crabtree is going to start.

http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/...days-game.html
Quote:
There is a "strong possibility" rookie receiver Michael Crabtree will be in the starting lineup Sunday against the Houston Texans, 49ers coach Mike Singletary confirmed this afternoon.

Josh Morgan started the first five games for the 49ers at split end. But Morgan told The Press Democrat today he has been informed Crabtree and Isaac Bruce will be the 49ers' starting receivers on Sunday.
Houston has a pretty bad secondary too, so hopefully Crabtree's first game is a memorable one..

49ers also placed LB Jeff Ulbrich on IR and signed Matt Wilhelm

Maybe they looked deeper at Houston's game tape and realized this might become a shootout. Fight fire with fire.

Also, from Maiocco's Ulbrich post:

"Offensive lineman Adam Snyder will continue to split time, but it won't be at right tackle. Snyder has been moved to right guard, where he and Chilo Rachal will share playing time for the near future, Singletary said.

Veteran Tony Pashos will take over as the full-time right tackle, where he had been splitting time with Snyder the past four games."

So THERE is the move that we were looking for at RG, but not with the person (Wragge) many of us thought. So, this is the team's way of saying that Snyder is (currently) considered the 5th best O-lineman on the Niners. Hopefully Snyder can be more consistent there than he was at RT. Also, it makes the OT position depth even scarier. If Pashos or Staley go down, the Niners are SCREWED!

I don't get why they benched Morgan though. He's been our best WR this year (not saying a whole lot, but still). Should have benched Bruce IMO.

"Rookie 49ers DL Ricky Jean-Francois missed flight to Bay Area after bye. He was not here for this morning's walk through, team source said. Jean-Francois will be fined undisclosed amount and Mike Singletary will "run him until he can't walk." Officially, team has no comment."
-per Maiocco

Haha, I liked that running part.

I don't know if Crabtree starting is a good thing or a bad thing. I mean, how ridiculously easy is our playbook that Crabtree can come in after 10 days and start. :D

Great news that Crabtree is coming along quickly enough to start. But wtf is up with benching Morgan? Crabtree and Morgan would be an explosive duo, if you want an explosive offense why bench your most athletic WR? Bruce has done nothing this year except stink it up the last few games, and he can't do anything after the catch. This has me befuddled, are we really this clueless on offense? This totally reminds me of the Derek Smith situation that haunted us the last couple years, Bruce is the one that should be benched...why stunt a young WRs growth? They are already stunting Jason Hill's and now Morgan, bleh.

And why would you ROTATE olinemen? If one is playing like crap, bench him; we need continuity. Argh.

Bruce is a vet and replacing him with a dude who's never seen NFL action would likely piss off some people on the team. That is my guess.

You're probably right, but Bruce has played like crap. The guy has been dropping balls as well, that's not vet-like.

He's barely seen any passes thrown his way. And when we do throw to WRs, it's usually in desperation. From my memory, all the throws Hill attempts to throw deep are lame ducks or way off target.

Snyder isnt the 5th best OL on the team, but maybe the most versatile. Cody Wallace will be called on to step up with his own versatility at RG if Snyder does an epic fail there, or if Heitman's aged battered body can't handle the beating anymore at center.

I agree 100%, why bench Morgan? Morgan has great hands & was coming along as a classic possession receiver that they need to move the chains. Morgan had a stellar camp & early season last yr complete with circus catches, then tailed off somewhat in the later season. He's at a crucial point in his development this yr to become a fixture with the team. I think Bruce is living off his considerable reputation this season & they don't want to risk demotivating the future Hall of Famer, Morgan is fall guy to make room for Crabtree.

Morgan is a talent, but he is still raw. Bruce has lost a step, but his track record has shown that he can make the catch when needed. Yes, I've seen him uncharacteristically drop some passes, but a couple have been bad throws in traffic. Plus Morgan has let a few through his hands as well, especially the long touchdown pass that would have been out longest passing play of the year. Team chemistry and the hierarchy of veterans on the team that is in place is important. Bruce was partly brought in to be a role model and leader for our young WR corps, and he can't do much for them on the field if he's on the sideline. Morgan understands this, and will continue to develop, taking over as the starter for Bruce next year.

If this was Madden, I'd have Crabs and Morgan starting, trading Bruce to a team like the Chiefs for a high 2nd and a 4th....but it's not, so let's think about the other factors on an NFL team, like the human element, veteran leadership, and young guys having to pave their way.

Agreed.

There are countless things seen behind closed doors that we can't even imagine. I wouldn't remove Bruce from the starting lineup if I were them either. Leadership goes a long way for a football team, especially one that is built on the foundation of work ethic.

I don't believe this situation should be Bruce vs. Crabtree it should be what it is, Crabtree vs. Morgan. I personally believe it when Singletary says Crab is working his tail off. I don't believe he has a choice. The question I want answered is, why isn't Morgan, who has been immersed in the offense from Day one, outworking crabtree to KEEP his spot. Singletary doesn't strike me as the type of guy who would start Crabtree just because of his ability, I believe Crabtree would have had to show him through his work ethic that he was outworking other guys.

For me, this falls on Morgan. His ability to bounce back and fight his way for touches is going to determine whether or not we have a dynamic duo at WR for the next 10 years.

Keep in mind, Crabs had to be working out privately with someone, meaning he probably wasn't out of shape. Also, I imagine that the team had him studying some information. There is a lot you can send and have someone study without giving away any if at all of your playbook.

Well, give Crabs credit for handling his business, keeping in shape and being an active studier. Yes, he made a horrible decision with choosing his agent, but as far as football, he know that. Crabs know football. Let's enjoy watching him play, and hopefully he can put on some kind of show in his "homecoming" game in Texas.

Adam Schefter just reported that the Niners signed CB Tarell Brown to a three-year, $7.125 million extension that included $2.5 million signing bonus.

Locking up young talent on the cheap = good work Niners! :)

Taylor Mays S, USC & Trent Williams OT, Oklahoma in Scott's new mock.

I'd be pretty happy with that, assuming Eric Berry isnt available. Mays would be a nice replacement for Michael Lewis, and you can never have enough quality lineman.

I would be overjoyed with that. :)

This would be amazing. As I am part of the minority (maybe the only one lol) that still has Mays ahead of Berry.

Despite stellar TD scoring from Vernon Davis & a fair to middling running game the 9ers are 27th in the NFL in total offense. And worst in the NFL in drives stalling, dead last in 3 & outs, 40.3% of the time.

I'd say that raises a big red flag, but Jimmy Raye says he won't tinker, tweak, or otherwise change the offense, won't convert to the spread even though they're starting Alex Smith & that's where he has the most experience.

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/2...its-blueprint/

9ers fans, it should not take you too long to see What's Wrong With This Picture. The past 2 9ers HCs have been defensive specialists & the offense has been almost completely turned over to the OCs, & this team has had 7 of them in 7 freaking yrs. Maybe they need a new OC before that 8th one in 8 yrs......all I can say is that it's a good thing Andy Lee is one of the best punters in the NFL.

Again, at rock bottom, dead freaking last in the NFL in 3 & outs. Man in lifeboat points to hole in bottom of hull. See that hole? That hole where all the water is coming in the boat, yeah that one.....

I agree, although a Joe Harden would be just as good for us as a Taylor Mays would be given our specific team needs. If we get either one, I'm calling it the right move.

Yeah Baas played center at Michigan, maybe he can replace Heitmann. Heitmann is declining badly, maybe he was a local draftee (Stanford) & an UDFA for a reason.

Wallace can play one guard spot. Somebody chk. this, hasn't Chilo Rachal been benched 2 wks. ago & still rides the pine?

For once Mark Purdy agrees with me, Smith isn't the answer at QB:

Everybody is jumping on the We Should've Drafted Rodgers Instead bandwagon now.... hell yes he was the better choice. Could've drafted him, but nooooooo.......
