I'm excited about David Carr, i've always liked him. I would be very very comfortable with Alex, David, Nate

Good for Carr & good for the 9ers, he's from Bakersfield & played at Fresno St. so I can see why he wants to catch on with them.

Always liked him, he throws a very catchable ball. He got a horrible deal with the Texans, set the sacks allowed rcd. his 1st or 2nd yr, spent his whole early career on his butt b/c Houston had the worst OL in the NFL. SF needs to fix (not upgrade, not nice to have b/c it's mandatory) its OL with this offseason & draft so Carr won't repeat that nightmare experience assuming he joins the team.

Carr is an upgrade over Hill but I dont want Smith looking over his shoulder. As for Davis, I dont think that he's going to develop into a quality starting QB but at the same time, who knows? All I said was that I would rather see him get a shot in 2011 instead of drafting another QB in the first round.

Man talk about missing out on the pie. All the people that we talked about are gone except for T.O. and I'm pretty sure he's not coming here. Is David Carr our big signing of the year? FML

If Smith is looking over his shoulder at Carr we are in trouble heading into next season.

I would rather see SF let Carr sign with Arizona. Would be nice to see a Carr led Cardinals team twice next season. :D

Here's a good article about RFA's -

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...oven-wideouts/

It's mainly geared towards WR's but also has to do with other positions as well. Add in a "poison pill" and quite honestly, we could probably get a player or two who are already established at a good price.

No one really worth signing though. As much as I would have loved to seen us sign Dansby and/or Rolle, they were overpaid but at the same time, their contracts are front loaded which isnt a bad idea for either side.

I really wish we bring back T.O. and trade for CB Richard Marshall. I would be happy with that going into the draft.

Doing research on what a "poison pill actually is. Anyone got a good source?

This article claims the tactic has only been used once...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...der/index.html

"The only logical explanation for the lack of poison pill use in one of the most competitive and cutthroat industries in the U.S. is that some type of gentlemen's agreement is in place. With the job turnover for coaches and executives and the ever-present insecurity that entails, how can it possibly be that not one of these 32 teams has had a desire to do what it takes to sign any of these tagged or tendered players?"

The poison pill was used twice. Once by MIN against SEA for OG Steve Hutchinson and the Seahawks against MIN on WR Nate Burleson as well, revenge. I would say that the Vikings easily won that fight. Of course, SEA was stupid NOT to franchise Hutchinson.

The union was against it or complained or something which is why it hasnt been used since but if I was the 49ers, I would and wouldnt give a damn about anyone getting pissed off.

The poison pill is basically a loophole that allows you to get the player at what you want but if the original team matches it, the contract becomes guaranteed for that team.

Yeah but it was to be expected. I think this FA period was more about not hurting ourselves (franklin, brooks, etc.) then making a splash.

Our victory has to be that Antrel Rolle is a Giant, Karlos Dansby is a Dolphin, and Anquan Boldin is a Raven.

Brandon Marshall may be a Seahawk before the weekend is over but at least he doesn't have Burleson on the other side.

And I don't think the Rams have made any signings, A.J. Feeley maybe.

We're in a great position to take some impact guys in the first round to keep taking steps in the right direction.

Default Carr update

Here's the article on Carr's meeting with the 9ers:

http://www.mercurynews.com/sports-headlines/ci_14522063

He was 21 for 33 for 225 yds. & a TD for the Giants in relief of Manning for the Giants last yr, not bad for a backup. What the stats don't tell you are his experience translating into the intangibles & wow factor, his team leadership & game management skills, assets that make him the hottest marquee name former starter QB available in the FA season so far.

The 9ers should grab him with an offer he can't refuse ASAP b/c if he goes to Zona his superior head for the game, his greater experience, & his coolness under fire, & those intangibles will allow him to beat out Matt the Lionheart for the starting job b/c Leinart can't handle failure & tends to melt down under pressure. Zona has a much greater need for a backup QB at this time b/c of the huge vacuum left with Warner's retirement & the lingering Leinart questions.

He would be a better fit for the 9ers for this reason: they altered the offense in latter p/o last season to the shotgun spread to accommodate Smith who ran it at Utah under Urban Meyer, & it seemed to work better than anything else Jimmy Raye's offense did (other than maybe moving TE Vernon Davis all over the place like a slot or motion man receiver to better get him downfield), it was at its best when the Gore power running game wasnt working. Carr is more adaptable & experienced with the shotgun b/c he ran it at Fresno St. more than he was under center. As a Texan they had to take radical measures to keep him upright, so they changed to a 3-step drop with shortened receiver routes & ran more shotgun formations with former #1-ranked WR Andre Johnson in a version of the spread to maximize getting him the ball. So I believe Carr could plug into the 9ers spread almost seamlessly backing up Smith -- I say sign him.

I'm not saying Nate Davis is the next great NFL QB, but you really do need to get the taste of Ken Dorsey and Cody Pickett out of your mouth.

Okay, we all love Patrick Willis but hmmmmmm, he needs to get his head examined -

http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/...or-willis.html

I agree with him in regards to just staying with who we have at QB but when he mentions a player who we should go after to play QB, he loses all credibility. Or should I say, a RB who plays QB.

On a related note - the Browns are interested in David Carr as well. Basically, the Browns, Cardinals, Giants and us are interested in Carr.

On a side note -

We need to make an offer for Rams FS O.J. Atogwe NOW!!! With Rolle being the highest paid safety in the league, we need to make Atogwe an offer that we're willing to pay and hope he accepts it because coming off an injury and someone who'll be 29 in June, his leverage isnt as high as it is for DaShon Goldson who'll be 26 in September and has the same agent as Rolle.

Let's hope we go after Atogwe and am able to get him at a good price because im sure that Goldson will want the same or more than Rolle.

Pretty happy all the top FAs are either signed or close to it. Now can people stop posting unrealistic free agent fantasies?

I bet if you picked the guys off that list that beat out a vet to make the final 53 their first year (as Nate Davis did) it would look a lot better. I'll admit I'm a bit too lazy to do that haha.

Interesting list though, thanks bro.

What vet did Nate beat out?

My point is this: several people seem to be saying, if Alex doesnt work out this year, we see what we have with Nate and maybe let him play for the starting job in 2011. Now, ignoring all the things that must occur for that to happen, I find that to be foolish thinking because the trend suggests that players taken late in the draft do nothing more that go on to be back ups. CJ provided us with TWO exceptions to that rule.

Damon Huard.

I mostly agree with you though. I don't think Davis is someone to lay the corner stone of the franchise on. But there is something to say for his arm strength and other physical abilities.

it was funny being at the niners-lions game and hearing all the fans screaming for N. Davis to be put in. Smith was horrible though, so i cant blame em.

Let's hope we go after Atogwe and am able to get him at a good price because im sure that Goldson will want the same or more than Rolle.
General manager Scott McCloughn already stated that the franchise isn't going to make a big splash in free agency and if I remember correctly he specifically stated about the safety position that we're going to go with who we have and let the younger players we drafted in the first place (Reggie Smith) try and take the mantle. We're not getting Otogwe. We may still be able to acquire a highly touted safety via the draft however. Not sure about Scott's thoughts on that.

While I agree with Scott McCloughn's approach of building through the draft, there are times when I believe one needs to seriously looking into free agency a good degree. That being said, I can't say that the 49ers brass haven't done that in recent years. They've made big splashes with players like Nate Clements and Justin Smith.
