This is the NFL after all and guys get replaced all the time, if you get your feelings hurt because they were looking at another guy you were probably in the wrong profession to begin with. Think about how many QB's that have actually been elite, and their team drafted QB's in the 1st round(who are rookies by the way, not hall of famers), they typically go out and play better ie Drew Brees.
Great post. Your dead on in every way. But in all honesty, I also agree with Dan(did I just say that). It was a long shot Manning would come here in the first place. He's maintained from jump, his preference was to stay in the AFC. And honestly who's to say how he would have looked in this offense? I was not thrilled as most Niner fans were about the prospect of a 36 year old QB learning a new offense, coming off a near career-ending injury. HOFer or not, the guy has performed in the same scheme his ENTIRE career. And he's lost his fair share in the post-season. It wasnt the slam dunk most of the media and fans were painting it as. Who knows how Peyton would have faired with this team.

But most importantly, Jimbaugh has been beating bush for Alex all year. I understand he didnt accept the offer but it just looks bad when your biggest supporter, secretly goes and workouts your possible replacement. I understand the business aspects of it. But if thats the case, keep the relationship business-like. You got the guy caddying for you at celebrity golf tournaments, your car-pooling together, then he's got Alex accepting his coach of the year award like he's his spokesperson. You, Jim Harbaugh, made it personal because you carried as more than a coach/player relationship. Of course he's going to feel slighted. If it were Simpletary, I dont think Alex would have blinked. But Jimbaugh being right there in the middle probably blind-sided Alex, and rightfully so.

But Im over it now, its time to be a professional, if your Alex. If your that butt-hurt, ask for a one year deal, ball so hard and prove Harbaalke and everyone else wrong, then leave the Niners hanging high and dry next year after you have put together two back-to-back good seasons. If not, swallow your pride and sign on the dotted line already. I don't see Baalke budging much off the intial offer. Its take or leave time Alex.....

Smith and 49ers appear to be finalizing a contract. 3 years $24m but no word on the guaranteed amount. I just hope that with Baalke/Harbaugh going after Manning, it doesnt screw up Alex progressing in 2012. I'll be so happy if Smith has a better season than Manning. :)

On another note... Manny Lawson in talks with the Packers.

Thought that might interest people here.

Find it very odd no 4-3 team desperate for LB help like the Saints, Falcons, or Eagles haven't been all over Lawson by now. He played very well in Zimmer's scheme last year and I figured he'd be a hot comoditity. I think going back to the 3-4 would be a mistake but considering the Packers get next to zero pass-rush from any OLB not named Clay Matthews, he might be a upgrade over guys like Walden, Jones, and Zombo.

Alex Smith's deal
Quote:
AP Source: Alex Smith's new 3-yr deal w/ #49ers is for $8 million per season with $16.5 million guaranteed, can pay him up to $33 million.
49ers gave Alex some extra "I'm sorry" guaranteed money after getting their hand caught in the cookie jar.

On twitter Randy Moss said he is going to wear #84 and Rock Cartwright is going with #28. Wonder if Manningham will get #82 from Byham?

Happy he is back because like he played last year he really is a good QB. With an offseason working with Jimbaugh he only will get better so we can open the playbook more. Besides that already an upgrade in the receiver-corps and i guess they will pick 1 or 2 guys in the draft. Only RG is still a need but besides that they are in a great position for the draft.

Ripple effect from Saints bounty punishment: Rams lose Greg Williams and 49ers move up one pick in round 2. Not bad.

9ers in contract talks with Schwartz.

So, Smith got an extra $6m+ in guaranteed money and possibly more depending on incentives. Happy he's been re-signed.

And thank God, Tebow was traded to the Jets which sucks for me personally since I live in NY. :(

Looks like the Tebow trade may get rejected by the Jets since it appears that there's a clause in Tebow's contract that requires the Jets to pay the broncos $5m guaranteed. Dont know why but I just read it several minutes ago on PFT. Either way, thats funny.

And yeah, I agree with you. Lucky for me, I avoid media crap and overrated crap like ESPN. :)

Congrats. I hope he ends up with Jacksonville.

The Schwartz was strong for the Vikings, not the 49ers.

Naw Maiocco is reporting that Smith got $9 mil guaranteed.

On another note, how much are folks going to prioritize OG in the draft if the Niners nab Leonard Davis?

I'm thinking its still a second round need, though I know we will and should target BPA.

I surely hope we dont sign Leonard Davis. He was out if work for a reason. He is a shell of his former overated-self. There are still some guys in free agency we might look at. We'll find a good bargin like we did with Goodwin last year. And I still say WR at 30. But a OG will be drafted though, Im almost certain. Probably a Center too.

I think I want Konz the most out of the guys that might be there at the end of round 1. Although, Hill is very interesting and would make a lot of sense considering they may no longer need an immediate impact WR from the draft. Zeitler works for me as well.

Just draft a OG in the 3rd-4th round area to compete with Kilgore. I don't want a washed up veteran.

Still some guys in free agency that could make sense for us....

Veron Carey
Jacob Bell
Jake Scott
Trai Essex
Derrick Dockery
Deuce Lutui
Anthony Herrera

All guys who still have some tread left on their tires. You can bring them in on the cheap(somewhat) and have them compete with Kilgore for the starting spot and at worst, they're quality guys with experience. Not to mention they'll probably be some quality vets on the market when June cuts roll around. I don't think anyone needs to panic about the OG position just yet.

UGH. What a crappy group. Essex would be the best option since he's the youngest but I see he's listed as an OT. Has he even played OG before? Lutui would be second best but seems to never get into shape and doesnt have the work ethic so forget him. And everyone else is 30 or older. UGH. I really wish Baalke would have just kept Snyder. UGH.

And how old is Synder? All those would be an improvement over Synder. You probably haven't watched any of them for a extended period of time. Bell, Scott, and Carey are a vast improvement over Synder. Synder's only redeeming quality was his versatility. Other than that, he blew....big chunks. That's why he's no longer a Niner. Your going to need some depth with experience anyway, being we're losing two OGs. All those guys have been productive starters for a stretch in their career. Synder was a career back-up who happen to be a better option over Rachal because of his ability in pass-protection. Not because he was soooo much better than Rachal, as two different coaching staffs had Rachal starting over him in conseuctive years. That alone should tell you he's no world beater. I would argue the fact that both Rachal and Synder wont be back should improve the play of the entire O-Line a great deal, as I saw each as being the two weakest of the group.

And I believe Essex is a OG naturally, but played OT due to injuries. I honestly always thought he should have been a OG, as he never really had the feet of a OT.
