I love this mock, Just add WR Sammie Stroughter and NT Sammie Lee Hill in the 5th round and they'd be set to draft a QB and BPA with their last 3 picks.

liking the sammie love, feel like he would be a nice WR for us and a returner when rossum hangs them up. i also like worrel williams as a late round ILB to pair with willis. big body and a huge motor.

Ah, they did sign Smith. Reported as a 2 year deal for $10.5 mil

http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/...ckle.html#more

We have 4 Smiths now...whatever the hell the significance of that is.

$5.25 million a year? Isn't that a little steep?

Thats a lot of moolah.

Also, on Jennings release, per Maiocco

Quote:
His release, which has been reported for several weeks, saves the 49ers $716,000 in cap room this season.
Thats it? I thought it would save us around 3 million?

I thought it was more, but either way, I'm glad he's gone. Smith didn't cost much more and is a better player.

5+ mil a year for a proven veteran tackle that has a Pro Bowl on his resume is what a team has to pay nowadays in free agency, especially to lure him away from his former team.

He corrected it -

"saves the 49ers $3.108 million in cap room this season. (Sorry, my math was horrible. Jennings' cap figure for 2009, had he remained on the roster, was $6.592 million. Now, he'll count $3.484 million in "dead money." The difference is $3.108 million, which is what the 49ers save with this move.)"

So I have been having some different thoughts about our draft.

I really think we are planning on starting Marvel next year which I am fine with. I also think we signed him just in case one of the top teir OT's doesn't fall to us. Now we can grab a guy in the third or fourth round to groom behind him, and we won't have to reach for one.

With Strickland leaving as a FA, Spencer coming back off of a knee injury, and Walt getting older, does this maybe shift our focus to corner in round one? Malcolm Jenkins perhaps? Or possibly Darius Butler or another CB in round two? That need at CB might have been bumped up a little but now.

I am getting a little more open to taking Aaron Maybin at ten, IF Everette Brown is gone. Now that we are a full time 3-4 team we can really settle in on some guys. We all don't think Parys Haralson can be a full-time 3-4OLB because he is a liability in coverage. As the weakside guy though he is going to be blitzing more often than not, and won't be relied on too heavy in coverage.

If we drafted Maybin then he could come in behind Haralson, and be a situational contributor as a rookie, and then take over when he was ready.

Just some quick notes to think about.

As Maybin was a full time DE in college (like Parys) has he proven that he can stand up and be more useful in coverage than Parys is? If not, they're in the same boat as Parys is a decent pass rusher, and it would be somewhat of a waste of the 10th pick.

I had mentioned previously in this thread, that with the recent developments at CB, that it has become more of a position of need and may garner consideration in the 2nd Round. I do believe there is more validity to looking into taking a corner earlier than a safety in the Draft. Goldson and Smith are both confirmed FS now, so why take another mid round pick and add it to two other young players at the same position? Taking a corner early that could eventually replace Harris is a good move.

It's hard to project where we will pick up a CB in this draft. It will be a need in 2010, but it's a future need. Then again, if you need a corner from the draft, you get him a year early rather than a year late or even the year of. Then you have to factor in that our FO doesn't believe in high picks for Corners due to their reliance on the pass rush. But if the Corner is the BPA at 10 (Jenkins) do we go for a CB??

I could see us picking a CB from anywhere from pick 10 to Round 5. Brown and Orakpo will probably be gone before we pick so id prefer picking up Jenkins at 10 and looking at a pass rusher later on- Barwin/Sintim at 43, Sidbury at 74, etc.

After his Pro Day performance I am all for taking Maybin at 10. He just keeps putting on more and more weight and could realistically be up to 260+ without losing any speed by the time the regular season rolls around.

YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!

I'm so happy. What a great day. Work was great. My classic SNES game was shipped that I won off ebay and best of all, that overrated overpaid piece of crap Jonas Jennings is GONE!!!

I'm so happy, I could cry but I wont. LOL.

However, $10.5m for Smith who has basically been Jennings for the last two years??? UGH. Crappy signing in my opinion. I can see adding him for depth but no way in hell would I have given him that much money. More like half for two years.

Draft wise, I have eliminated Everette Brown from my list in regards to the 10th overall draft pick. Looking at Parys Haralson, he had 8 sacks in 16 games but he only started 10 of them which means he averaged just under a sack per game per start. Thinking about it, I would rather see him and Lawson start at OLB with Willis and Spikes at ILB.

With CB Donald Strickland signing with the Jets, Spencer coming off that injury, Hudson being average at best and Harris getting older, I have gone back to what my original pick was at the beginning. - CB Malcolm Jenkins.

Really changing up your thoughts on that one lol :D

I'm with you though. I think there may be a greater need for a first day pick than OT now. The Smith signing doesn't make our tackles dominant, but I think it does make us deep.

I really like Gerald Cadogan,T.J. Lang, Fenuki Tupou and Joel Bell in the third or fourth rounds.

I also think WR is a first day need, but I think that's just cause I don't like the Jones signing...

I believe the contract is more incentive laden than Jennings' was. I think the front office learned to protect itself more.

On top of that.Smith has played in 17 games in the last two years, Jennings has played 24 in 4 years... Not even close dude, Smith is an upgrade.

On top of all that, Smith was a pro bowl caliber players. Jennings was questionably overrated on the free agent market. There is a good chance Smith is underrated, as long as he can stay healthy.

Smith is definitely an upgrade but if we pass on a potential starting RT at 10 and Smith (who'll be 31 when the season starts) gets injured, we're screwed.

I disagree. It wouldn't be ideal, but Snyder and a third or fourth round draft pick (Cadogan, Tupou or Lang) would provide adequate depth IMO.

We will still add a tackle on the first day it just may not be in the first round anymore it just depends on who falls.
