the issue tears me, since the mayas are one of my favourite societies in history, but I really can't get behind the idea that the world is just going to end for no obvious reason.
Damn you mayans, damn you and your brilliance.

That's why you know that eventually humans will spread across the universe. There will be people in our generation that try to change the world, the carnage of that event will tamper any concerns over over-population as the conflict will drive us further. As long as science doesn't get too bogged down in bureaucracy we'll keep spreading and expanding.

The best way for the world to end would be by a Apocalyptic Alien Mayan Man bear pig with Aids and a megaman blaster that shoots nukes and jumps out of a volcano!!! FTW

If I could pick, I'd go with our sun dying. How cool would it be to have a nebula or red giant as our light source?
However if we did create a black hole, that **** would be awesome. I love the idea of dying in absolute chaos.

Just to make myself feel old, I remember seeing that movie when it first came out. It was at a drive in movie theater.

the flu? I think an epidemic would be unlikely but not out of the question... more likely a genetically bottle-necking event in which the species is stronger as a result.

If a particularly strong species comes around and antivirals don't work (which is why we really should be worrying), there's not a lot we can do. With populations as they are today and almost 100 years of viral evolution, the 1918 epidemic would be miniscule in comparison (assuming that we couldn't mobilize fast enough to shut down borders).
Genetics don't really have a huge part to play in it. It's one virus strain. Some people would survive, but they wouldn't really be stronger in any ongoing way.

if there was a pandemic that killed as many as you think, yes, the gene pool would improve because those who have evolved enough that they are more immune than others will only (albeit slowly) improve the overall immunity of our species. Think about it this way, there are actually people in Africa immune to the HIV. How insane is that?

You and your 'science'. pfft, get this nonsense out of here!
It's a shame that more people don't realize the real threat of the manbearpig. Even gingers (as Tackle said) may pose a larger risk than this flu you speak of.

This assumes that ManBearPig isn't actually the name of a virus that Al Gore is secretly developing to spite the world.

Immunity to one strain of one virus is just that. If the virus kills everyone is can survive in, the virus is dead from that point on anyway. If a very similar strain shows up that's just as powerful, sure those people would be in better shape, but strains aren't normally that closely related and only one thing would have to mutate for that immunity to change.
Immunity isn't some broad-spectrum thing that sizes up the "strength" of a person's resistance to "disease". It's a highly particular thing that only applies to one strain of billions.
