The whole "Enlightenment" movement was basically just a plagiarized version of earlier theorists and contemporary social debates that were going on at the time. I can't think of a damn original thing that Voltaire ever said.

The concept of the enlightenment is pretty ridiculous anyway. Considering that the timespan has been described anywhere from 100 to 170 years, it isn't as if advancement wasn't to be expected. Some really good ideas were put forth during this time and perhaps the most overtly honest looks at government by people who had been historically ruled by Monarchist governments took place during that period, but we've managed to sift out the crap from that century or so and now just focus on a handful of thinkers who were actually productive.

Everyone was just cracked out on huge caffeine doses and felt self-important for a while.

Well, I do agree there. It's at least a highly subjective abstraction.

I think that people acquire too much useless stuff at the behest of 'common sense', which isn't common sense for them.

But at the same time, at what line do you stop helping yourself and help the common good. I don't think people have internally defined what that line is, and thus are always helping themselves to seconds, thirds, and fourths, when if they learned who they are they'd be happy with firsts. This all assuming you don't eat like italians on a sunday, which, first course is a very little dish, and second course is too, and so is third course, fourth course, fifth course, sixth seventh and eight course, nineth course tends to be a bit larger, and tenth course... by then you're too full for dessert.

If you knew how many "teachable moment" lectures I have given that have started out with that concept, it would make your head spin.

I agree with this for the most part, but I think that some people are not afraid.. But rather they're too apathetic. They'd rather let someone else tell them what to be than do it themselves.

and hence i look at the american style government and say apathy is systemic in people not taking charge of their own pursuit of life, liberty, and property.

to quote Kierkegaard again...

"people are absurd. they don't use the liberties they have and they demand those they don't have. they have the freedom of thought, but they demand the freedom of speech."

it's possible that i can rack up the apathy to a general desensitation of feeling or caring in what happens in the world due to the way the media portrays some of it, and people have lapsed in judgement to not use their free thought to make opinions. the spoonfed nature of the way we do business with everything is kinda sickening, especially as i've been abroad, the way business is done here in RSA is done with more vitality and more inspection than it is at home.

When it stops being about a paycheck, a means to an end, and instead just focusing on the end and doing the best you can, integrity improves.

All i can think about though is Enron.

I took Intro to Logic instead of a regular math class. It was awful. I hated it.

Logic is pretty important for Linguistics, so I'll be taking that most definitely.
