Default Surprise programs for the 2009 season.

The first four are programs I think are talented and could surprise some people this year if they play up to their talent. Feel free to add any teams as you see fit.

A very talented and underrated program, their offense is very individual and explosive. Leading the way is the duel threat Kapernick who continues to improve year after year. They have found a very solid running back in Taua and have a talented tough offensive line behind Bender and Durham. The receivers will have to grow though, but the running game has always made them go. The defense has some real stars as well, Basped is a flat out talent at rush end and Johnson at linebacker is about as fast as they come. In the secondary they are long and rangy, leading the way with Thompson and Amaya.
QB Kaepernick
RB Taua
WR Wellington
TE V. Green
OL Bender, Durham
DL Basped, Moch
LB J. Johnson
CB A. Thompson
S Amaya

After a down year Illinois should be back if they can get their running game going, look for Dufrene to do that. Williams improved a lot last year and if he takes yet another step watch out. They have very talented receivers with one of the best in the country in Benn. Fayson, Cumberland and Duvalt are all quite talented but just need to prove it on the field. The offensive line will have to prove themselves however. On defense they have solid players on the line with Pilcher and Brent. At linebacker another star is in the waiting with Wilson, he will carry that group. The secondary took a hit but has experienced players returning to help in Hicks and the hard hitting Hardeman.
QB I. Williams, McGee
RB Dufrene, Ford
WR Benn, Cumberland, Fayson, Duvalt
TE Hoomanawanui
OL
DL Pilcher, A. James, Brent
LB M. Wilson
CB Hicks
S Hardeman

A very tough physical football team, Best will be even better this season and could be one of the best in the nation, backing him up is Vereen who will keep him fresh. At receiver they have the big physical Boateng to make plays and Tucker has speed to get deep. Riley is a little question but at least has experience and the offensive line will be sound like usual. On defense they have star ends with Alualu and Jordan, those two really are hard to block. Then there is Mohamed backing them up and making all the tackles. The middle of the defense is the question with the safeties but the corners are as good as any and Thompson is a flat out star there. They will surprise some people this season, too much talent not too.
QB Riley
RB J. Best, Vereen
WR Boateng, Tucker, M. Jones
TE
OL Schwartz
DL Alualu, C. Jordan
LB Mohamed
CB S. Thompson, Hagan
S

When is the year South Carolina will make it, well they have little to no expectations this year. If they find a running game though watch out, because Garcia can throw the ball and make plays down the field. The receivers have to grow but Barnes does have a lot of talent and so does the tight end Saunders. The offensive line will have to be strong again but they have some good experience there. On defense their front four is strong, the two defensive tackles Peppers and Ajiboye are very good and defensive end Matthews is a potential star. Then you have Norwood coming back who is as good as any defensive player in the SEC. The secondary will be a question mark but they have talent coming in and Culliver will cover up a lot of mistakes. If they fill in a few pieces and the offense because a real threat and catches up to the defense, they will be a good team.
QB Garcia
RB
WR Barnes, Lecorn, M. Brown
TE Saunders
OL J. King, Eckerson
DL Matthews, Peppers, Ajiboye, Geathers
LB Norwood, Paulk
CB Auguste
S Culliver, D. Stewart

These two rosters are not so much surprise teams, but comeback teams after somewhat down years. Very talented rosters with extremely talented offensive players.

Little surprise to most, Notre Dame will be a very good team next season. The offensive is explosive and very deep. The receiver core is as strong as any and Clausen will continue to improve off of his solid sophomore year. They even have a decent little stable of running backs with a very experienced offensive line leading the way. On defense the line and linebackers will need to improve but they have good players coming in. The defensive backfield is surprisingly solid with potential stars in the waiting with Blanton and Smith, plus veterans in McNeil and McCarthy. Notre Dame will be back potentially in a very big way this season.
QB Clausen
RB Allen, Hughes, Aldridge
WR Floyd, Tate, Kamara
TE Rudolph, Ragone
OL Young, Olsen, Duncan
DL
LB B. Smith
CB McNeil, Blanton, Walls
S H. Smith, McCarthy, S. Brown

They are a very dangerous offense with most of their key weapons returning. Kansas has a big physical offensive line, leading the way are Spikes and Hatch at tackle. The receiving core return two thousand yard receivers in Meier and Briscoe, Wilson is not far behind them. Reesing is the ultimate field general and should do more of the same this year. The defense has some players that will hold it up, especially in the secondary with Harris and Stuckey. Kansas is here to stay.
QB Reesing
RB Sharp
WR Meier, Briscoe, Wilson
TE
OL Spikes, Hatch
DL Onyegbule, Blakesley, Wheeler
LB
CB C. Harris, Thornton
S Stuckey

South Carolina is almost a sure bet to be worse than last year. But I agree that "their" year is long overdue...just not this year.

I got to go with Cal... mostly because I grew up a Golden Bears fan.

Oh, and don't count my alma mater out this year, I am hoping we do well. At least they goddamn better if they ever want to see a dime of my money again.

It all is about the quarterback position and if they can actually have a running game or not. Maddox and Baker have done nothing yet, but this Giles kid coming it is supposed fast and good. Garcia if he is improved and they can run the ball they will be good, the offense has to get better. On defense they got supposedly talented safeties that could really help out. But yeah who knows, if they cannot run the ball and Garcia is still average than yeah they could be worse than last year.

They're one of the most inexperienced teams in college football. History indicates they have an 82% chance of having the same or worse record as last year. Same thing goes for Navy and Missouri.

Watching a reply of a Cal game on ESPNU, they are going to be even better than I thought. Very deep and talented football team who have a very effective 3/4 defense with two outstanding corners.

Oregon has another power RB on their roster with Blount to add to their long list.

SMU looks to do a big turnaround under June Jones.

Baylor has surprisingly recruited some A-list players lately, & the Bears & Penn St. both have the 2 biggest QBs in Div. 1 since Jared "Pillsbury Throwboy" Lorenzen.

Oklahoma St. has collected a talent pkg. with Dez Bryant that will throw scares into Texas & the Sooners.

Jahvid Best is called the Beast at Berkeley & looks to be a Ladanian Tomlinson clone, Cal has as Oz noted another contender under Tedford, maybe their best team since Rodgers was at QB.

The fastest-rising program in the nation, Ole Miss, got Greg Hardy back for the season today, the guy is one of if not the best DE in the nation & survived a fiery car crash, how scary is that? The Rebels are now the 3rd team in the SEC West to be top 10-ranked (per Athlon anyway).

I predict Rick Neuheisel will save his job by upsetting SC.
