I agree with everything said here, but I think Batman Begins is better (certainly not by much, and pretty much splitting hairs) for the exact same reasons.

I prefer Begins slightly to The Dark Knight, mainly due to backstory and a much better performance from Bale (Who was really bad at times in The Dark Knight, and I hate to say that since he's probably my favorite actor going). What The Dark Knight has that virtually no other film can even come close to matching is one of the greatest villains ever created and performed. I love Jack Nicholson as much as the next guy, but his version and Burton' version is amateur compared to the Ledger / Nolan character. I can't even look at Batman and help but laugh after seeing Ledger' performance. The franchise has been done right for the first time and every aspect of the new Batman films are vastly better than anything done prior to it. I've always thought that if Batman Begins had the kind of villain The Dark Knight had, then it would be one of the best movies ever made. I liked Neeson a lot, as always, but nothing compares to the Joker, and more specifically, Heath Ledger' joker. One of the greatest acting performances ever, and without that performance, the film suffers immensely. I thought Harvey Dent was kind of ********. That standoff at the end was rushed, uninspired and lacking any creative writing that could be seen as suspenseful (When virtually the entire movie before that is and works on every level of creativity and complexity). The ending, maybe aside from the final 30 seconds, is a major disappointment. The hype around that movie was insane and maybe my expectations were too high, but any time Ledger isn't on screen, it's just not the same and the movie doesn't work nearly as well.

I think a great (my opinion the greatest) villain can "make a movie," but he alone can't make it the best movie ever made, unless he's in every scene. I do think Ledger made that movie great, just not the greatest movie of all-time great. Not even close. Top 10 of the year, but barely. Is it overrated? Yeah. Do I care? No. There's good reason for it to have such a huge, massive following. I will watch The Dark Knight many times in the future... mostly because of Ledger.

I don't think I saw it mentioned, but my personal favourite from the 2000's is EuroTrip.

I think the next Batman movie will be more centered on Batman and hopefully that includes the bat cave. *crosses fingers*

My main disappointment with TDK was obviously Two-Face dying, but the next movie was supposed to have the Joker as the main villain again so I can kind of give Nolan a pass on that. He didn't know what would happen to Ledger and I'm sure if he had the opportunity to change that ending he would.

Actually, in the original ending of TDK, Two Face didnt die. That part of the ending was re-shot after Ledger's death because Nolan wasnt sure if he would do a 3rd film, so he didnt want to leave anything unresolved. Originally, Two Face was supposed to escape and the Joker is captured, and the 3rd film was supposed to be about the Joker's trial with Two Face as the main villain. Since that film couldnt be made without Ledger, the ending was re-shot and the Two Face dying was added.

I find it funny that a year ago Memento was rated the #7 movie of all-time and now it's the #10 movie of the 2000's.
