At this point, don't Browns fans wish Romeo Crennel just knew Anderson was going to be the starter from day 1 of that season, instead of starting Charlie Frye and drafting Brady Quinn? You might have made the play offs if Anderson could salvage a win where Frye couldn't, and you would have saved a draft pick and used it on something else instead of QB.
instead of now, where you have a perpetual QB battle that will likely take another QB being brought in to solve?
|
That's an interesting thought. I do think that if the team committed to Anderson at that point in his career and got him in on more film study before throwing him to the wolves he might've been smarter with the ball with a better grasp of how to beat NFL defenses.

By a QBs fifth season, including third as a starting quarterback, you generally know what type of player he is and what he could realistically improve to become better, with Derek Anderson that's a big armed QB who moves around well and likes to throw deep, he also likes to throw into double coverage and bad spots, he doesn't command his offense very well before the play and he's shown that he will kill drives for you.
Brady Quinn on the otherhand is just entering his third season after redshirting, practically, his first season and suffering injury in his second season, so he's still in a very malleable stage of his development. Also if you look at his play he clearly gets it before the play and understand the game, but once the ball is snaps his feet get happy and he basically panics. Now a good coach should be able to get a guy to calm down and just relax once the play has started. If a coach did that I think Quinn could be a successful starting quarterback, and fixing that problem at this stage in Quinn's development seems more plausible to me than improving Anderson's understanding of running an offense eliminating his dumb throws at this stage in his development.
As for my VY comparison that had a lot more to do with the merit of their pro-bowl births than a straight comparison of playing styles or performance. Unless you're point was simply to illustrate that Anderson had better states thus a better case than VY in which case I won't disagree since I think neither one deserved their spots in the Probowl.

Derek Anderson's pro bowl was merited, the Browns had one of the better offenses in the league and he was at the helm of it. Plus, who else would've taken his spot?

I think this QB competition is good for Anderson bad for Quinn.
Why?
If it hasn't sunk in for Anderson he will have learned that he needs to protect the ball, if he doesn't he's going to get pulled. Last year it wasn't so much his turnovers that plagued him, it was his inaccuracy, dropped passes, and pressure from defense. This year I am hoping he can avoid throwing it into double/triple coverage and just do the smart thing and get rid of the ball because he knows he can get pulled if he turns the ball over.
Quinn on the other hand finally had the starting job and obviously panicked when he had it. For someone like him I expect it probably crushed his ego, but I don't know what really happened. I honestly can tell you that if Quinn came back in and lit it up I would be very happy about it and I wouldn't mind taking the heat saying I'm wrong, hes a browns player and i want him to do well. I just don't think its going to happen, with the Browns or any other team, until he straightens out his accuracy and starts playing with some confidence.

Honestly I don't remember who elseshould have had that spot, but Anderson preyed on a weak schedule, started really hot because Braylon and KWII were coming down with a lot bad passes early and finished the season very mediocrely.

The problem is if anderson shows no signs of improvement you've already messed with Quinn a lot and I think even if you go back to him there's a good chance he'll be screwed up and you won't gain anything creating a situation where you have two ****** quarterbacks like Washington had under Spurrier.
Exactly, Quinn needs to have his confidence rebuilt, but you don't do that by making him play with one eye on the field and one over his shoulder, you don't do that by yanking him the moment he takes a risk and gets burned, you do that by letting him work through his struggles.

Ya it was a weak schedule but that's besides the point because it's not really taken into consideration when people vote or the players are picked.

anyone who wants to say all of that was andersons fault didnt watch the game and just looked at the box score, by the end of the game there were
2 drops by stuckey
2 drops by harrison
2 drops by massaquoi
1 drop by royal (30 yards about could have went for a td)
Those are the ones i can remember, I think harrison may have dropped one more... Some of them weren't perfect passes but they definitely should have been caught.

you can't expect these guys to catch passes when they're thrown that hard unless it's steve heiden who has the world's softest hands... these guys don't get paid enough to have to try to catch balls that aren't lobbed
