Michigan State wide receiver Fred Smith has been reinstated to the football team after serving four days in jail for his role in a November residence hall assault.

Coach Mark Dantonio said Tuesday that Smith, a redshirt sophomore, is practicing with the team during spring workouts. Smith pleaded guilty Feb. 11 to conspiracy to commit assault and battery.
You stay classy, Dantonio.

Dantonio also said Tuesday that nose tackle Oren Wilson is still in the process of transferring schools. Wilson's lawyer told reporters last month at Wilson's sentencing that his client still hoped to return to Michigan State and would contact Dantonio. But Dantonio ruled out a return.

West Virginia University officials confirmed on Tuesday that NCAA investigators have recently interviewed university officials about potential rules violations involving the Mountaineers' football program.

West Virginia officials wouldn't comment on the specifics of the allegations, but a source close to the situation said the allegations center on former Mountaineers coach and current Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez.

...

The report said Rodriguez tracked neither what his staff was doing nor whether his players were following NCAA rules, particularly those limiting the time spent on practice and football-related activities.
Yeah, important stuff.

According to the NCAA, excessive practice time = bad. Multiple players heading to jail during the off-season = not bad.

Gophers FS Kim Royston broke two bones in his leg at practice yesterday. With SS Kyle Theret currently suspended for getting a DUI, this leaves zero returning starters from the defense currently practicing.

Can anyone confirm that Duron Carter might be out at OSU? I read it on Penn State's premium board and his father said he wasn't mature enough to go there.

We need him, but not this year at the very least. But as far as I know, he's still here, trying to get his grades back up.

i heard that those rumors were false. But he still is not practicing yet this spring b/c of grade from the winter quarter. he shaved his dreadlocks and is supposedly getting focused on getting back on track....though his twitter feed would make you think otherwise.

I'm really excited to watch Ohio State's offense this year, it should be explosive.

I'm just throwing this out there now, bit Posey is severely underrated on the national stage. I've been watching OSU for a long time now, and Posey is every bit as good as fast and agile as Santonio Holmes, but has the height and size of Robiskie. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves due to Julio and Aj, but he had over 800 yards receiving last year despite the fact that Pryor was extremely limited in the passing game.

Another eye to keep out for is Jake Stoneburner. I've been hesitant to pimp him because OSU hasn't used tight ends much since 2004, but if we use him, mark my words, he'll be a Kellen Winslow clone, or perhaps a Travis Beckup type (except bigger). Not the best blocker in the world, but he's every bit of 6'5 250 with 4.6 speed to go with his size. He's been the story of spring camp, so I would find it hard to believe he won't be used.

In terms of defense, well, everyone already knows our defense is going to be dominant, and most know who the stars will be. My biggest concern is with our defensive backfield, although that's only because our linebackers and d-line are so solid.

If Pryor plays half as good as he did in the Rose Bowl last year, I see no reason we won't be heading to the national championship. Call me cocky or having high expectations, but the last time I said this at the start of a season was the year we had Troy Smith and played Florida in the NC game (which we lost of course).

Tate Forcier apparently came in to Michigan at 167 pounds and is apparently up to 197. Sweet.

Word has it Vlad Emilien and Cam Gordon are both destroying everything in sight in practice. Michigan...with good safeties? I think the world would explode.

yeah, apparently Stoneburner has been the offensive star of spring practice so far. Defensively Cameron Heyward is impossible to block one on one. Impossible they say.

I've heard Carter isn't playing because of his grades. Hopefully he'll get those up and get back to playing football.

I'm pretty excited about the team this year. I am worried about what the secondary will look like. Losing Coleman left a huge hole at safety.

The offense will look to be great. Pryor played amazing in the Rose bowl and I think that has raised peoples expectations for him.

Its a relativly easy schedule too, no reason they shouldn't run the table.

How so? Which guy/guys that are in this draft or the last draft were way off from Michigan? In other words, which guys have actually had their height and weight recorded at the Senior Bowl/combine/pro day that are way different and not just an eyeball test saying they look lighter/shorter than listed?

I'm just talking about Forcier. They made it an emphasis to loudly announce how much he weighed every week.....and the measurements were clearly bogus. my right arm weighs more than he does, but I'm supposed to believe he weighs almost 200? suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure.

I don't necessarily disagree, but until any actual "official" weight numbers come out, there's really no proof that it's a bogus weight. Plenty of people didn't think Mike Hart would come in at 5'9" either.

That said, I highly doubt Forcier is actually 6'1" either, so..................

He can get up to 250 and Adrian Clayborn will still break him in half.

I don't know, but if he's even at 185, that's not too bad.

Taylor Lewan is supposedly at 285 and running a 4.89. Lies.

Forcier is noticeably bigger than he was last year. Is he 197? I don't know, but he's not 165 anymore either.

I was just going to say maybe I should stop picking favorites before they see the field after the Carter thing and I was going to reference my like for Saine, Stoneburner, and Heyward, but now all three might be amazing!

Wasn't Ballard one of the stars of spring practice last year? I'll believe OSU throws to the TE when I see it.

i don't remember Ballard ever being the star of spring practice. I know Stoneburner looked good last year as the #2 tight end but he never got looks in the fall or in the spring game. I think Pryor's development and throwing to the TEs/RBs go hand in hand. Pryor threw pretty much only to Posey and Sanzenbacher last year. I don't think they trusted Pryor to throw over the middle of the field last year and now they're moving more towards that way with a stud in the slot like Stoneburner who isn't gonna block anyway.
