Glad we got Franklin taken care of. He was pretty good last season. I just hope it wasn't a fluke and can repeat his success. He's kind of small for a nose tackle in a 3-4 defense.

What Blindsite said, plus this: The draft pick value (ie "2 first round picks") is mostly a suggestion. It's a starting point for valuation but rarely does a team actually get 2 firsts. Generally, a team will get 2 picks but it's usually along the lines of a 1st & 2nd or 1st and 3rd. There is nothing in the CBA or frachise tag definition that mandates it MUST be 2 1sts.

Is Gostkowski a UFA? If yes, I can see the Pats franchising him if we give Wilfork a long-term deal.

No. He doesn't have 6 years so he'll be RFA. Give him the high tender and take the picks if someone wants to part with draft choices for a kicker.

And it's 2 franchise tags because of the uncapped year. So get ready to see Mankins & Wilfork tagged.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, Mankins only has 5 years. I'm not sure what that does to his status as a FA.

We have to keep Mankins, he's probably the best overall player in the team.

I don't think there are 2 franchise tags, there's the franchise and the transition just like every year.

Maybe that's the confusion - both can be used. Was it one or the other in previous years or could both be used? It's tough to be sure since the transition tag is never used.

I'm fairly sure that you could use both if you were so inclined. But the problem is that the entire salary would then be guaranteed, not many teams can tie up that much cap space in 2 players. The franchise is the average of the top 5 players at a given position, the transition is the top 10 and both have the right of first refusal built in.

I hope we can lock Sharper up to a 2 or 3 year deal rather than tagging him.

Have a front loaded contract because the uncapped year would really help him stay on with us.

It was a mistake, but not an accident. Yeah they used the transition tag on him to try to pinch a few pennies, but they broke the bank on Shaun Alexander.

Superb GMing.

It's the average of the top highest 5 paid or it's 10% on top of what a player made the previous year, which is why Pep's figure was so high last year.

I just found this also. The amounts of what a franchise or transistion tag would be for this upcoming year.

CORNERBACK: $9.566 million (franchise), $8.056 million (transition)
DEFENSIVE END: $12.398m, $10.193m
DEFENSIVE TACKLE: $7.003m, $6.353m
LINEBACKER: $9.680m, $8.373m
OFFENSIVE LINE: $10.731m, $9.142m
PUNTER/KICKER: $2.814m, $2.629m
QUARTERBACK: $16.405m, $14.546m
RUNNING BACK: $8.156m, $7.151m
SAFETY: $6.455m, $6.011m
TIGHT END: $5.908m, $5.248m
WIDE RECEIVER: $9.521m, $8.651m

The franchise tag is an average of the top five salaries at a position for the 2009 season. (Or, in the case of "exclusive" franchise tags, the average of the top five salaries as of a TBD date this coming April.) The transition tag is an average of the top 10.

I don't like how offensive line and linebacker are grouped together as one. Or maybe I just feel like complaining today.

Sorry for so many posts from doing a little research teams don't have 2 franchise tags. It looks like teams can use both the franchise and transition tags. I always thought they could use both anyway.

I really doubt that many teams are going to willfully apply the transition tag without some additional assurances from the league that they are protected from "poison pill" clauses. A few might get used on some lesser players, but that's about it.

I think he means how they group outside linebackers with inside and offensive tackles with centers. Since between schemes theres are 4 different linebacker positions and, if you put left tackle on a different level than right tackle, four significantly line positions as well.

Bingo, what he said ^^^.

I think its silly that if you want to franchise a center you have to pay him the average of the top 5 LT's.... that makes no sense to me.

Raiders expected to tag UFA Seymour

To give up a first round pick for him and then have to tag him the next year looks all kinds of bad.
