Damn, as someone who has only started following in the last couple of years, that Miami team is ridiculous good. I mean they seriously have a team that could win a superbowl there. They have an all pro secondary, a bunch of very good linebackers and given Wilfork is there, they could easily pick a 3-4 if they wanted. Scary good.

USC has an offense that could score on any team in the NFL, but defensively they arent as good.

That Miami team makes you say WOW!

im sure i missed some but damn thats alot of pros on 1 team
Ya, but 9 of them are freshmen and last I looked only 1 RB can carry a ball. I think USC wins in a walk, their 2004 team was the greastest offensive machine ever in college football and their defense was good enough to hold Miami's offense in check. You still need a great QB to beat great teams and Miami's QB is not in Leinart's class.

I was actually just going to point that out. I count ten freshmen and five sophomores on that team. Unless I am overlooking someone, of all those freshmen, only Sean Taylor received significant playing time. He wasn't even a starter. If I remember correctly, Daryl Jones was Miami's #1 receiver going into the year. Guys like Frank Gore and Kellen Winslow really didn't contribute all that much. Sure, it is an impressive roster, but about half of those guys didn't see the field until 2002 or 2003. With that being said, I think Miami had just enough to get by USC.

You're acting like Dorsey didn't go to two Heisman ceremonies. He may not be much in the pros but he certainly got the job done when he was in Miami. UM's offensive line was dominant, add in Johnson, Shockey, Portis and Dorsey and that is a scary offense. The defense was just as stacked.

Dorsey was one of the best college QBs ever. I'am going to take it that you haven't followed college football very long since you made that statement.

Reggie/Lendale would not have been able to go anywhere or juked anyone with that defence. Ed Reed, Vilma and DJ..... on top of that look how many 1st day picks they had amongst the Dline... good luck
Miami would have shut down the run game of USC and then just pounded the ball behind that amazing Oline. USC did not have the defence to even come close to beating a team of Miami's calibre.

The only team In the last 15 years that think that could give the 01 Canes a run for their money would be the 95' huskers.

Leinart goes down as one of the greatest college QB's ever too, his record is near identical to Dorsey.

Miami's defense was ridiculously good, but USC's defense was also deceptively good that year.

The matchup comes down to coaching imo. I think that's where Norm Chow may be able to find something somewhere.

Talentwise, Miami easily. But in an actual game with the coaching staffs, I am inclined to give USC a slight edge.

i dont know how usc's defense was able to stop so many teams, their corners, scott ware and justin wyatt sucked.

Too much is often made of who made it in the pros and what not. Certainly, that helps, but we are comparing the collegiate teams. For me, it would've come down to the lines. As good as Shaun Cody and Mike Patterson were, I think Romberg, Bibla and company would've controlled them well enough, and McKinnie was a dominant tackle. In short, I think Dorsey would've been protected. That USC DL had spurts, but it wasn't a dominant unit. For a collegiate unit, that Miami group was very, very good, and consistent as well. I think they would've opened holes for Clinton Portis, and don't forget about Najeh Davenport, who would've been a load to handle. The USC secondary wasn't too great either. Who do they double up - Shockey or Andre Johnson?

Defensively, that Canes unit was real good. It's been 6 years now, and people might forget. But with Williams/McDougle coming off the edges, and William Joseph (NFL flop, but real good that year inside for them), they could cause trouble, along with Wilfork. The USC OL was good ... but could they handle that type of talent? I'm not sure they faced any unit that good all year long. The linebackers of Miami were athletic, fast, and dominant, with DJ and Jonathan Vilma. That secondary was special. Rumph was a NFL bust, but playing off of Buchanon and Reed, he was good. And the other two were real good collegians.

It would've been a great game. It's easy to look at Ken Dorsey and say "Matt Leinart vs. Ken Dorsey ... ", but let's not forget what a good collegiate QB Ken Dorsey was, able to utilize all his weapons. I just don't think the USC defense would be able to do enough to stop the Miami offense consistently, whereas the Miami defense was big, fast, and strong, and I think they would've neutralized the USC squad just enough. If I had to pick a score, I would've guessed (sure ... I know this is shooting myself in the foot and inviting people to blast me) - 27-20, Canes.

looking at the USC made me wonder, where is TOm "The Bomb" Malone now? I remember he almost declared early after they won the NC.

Ouch That U team is filthy. I'd pay good money to see that matchup, and I'd think Miami would win about 31-30

Pete Carroll,Norm Chow,Lane Kiffin,Steve Sarkisian > Miami coaching staff.

The talent is greater at Miami but SC's coaching staff would limit the gap.

Would LIMIT that gap.
Starting teams from wiki
QB Ken Dorsey
FB Najeh Davenport
HB Clinton Portis
TE Jeremy Shockey
SE Andre Johnson
FL Kevin Beard
LT Bryant McKinnie
LG Sherko Haji-Rasouli
C Brett Romberg
RG Martin Bibla
RT Joaquin Gonzalez

RE Jerome McDougle
DT Matt Walters
DT William Joseph
LE Andrew Williams
WLB D.J. Williams
MLB Jonathan Vilma
SLB Chris Campbell
RCB Mike Rumph
FS James Lewis
SS Ed Reed
LCB Phillip Buchanon

K Todd Sievers
P Freddie Capshaw
KR Andre Johnson
KR Frank Gore
PR Phillip Buchanon

Special teams damn.

First Team All-Americans
Phillip Buchanon, PR
Joaquin Gonzalez, RT
Bryant McKinnie, LT (consensus)
Ed Reed, SS (consensus)
Jeremy Shockey, TE
Todd Sievers, K

All-Conference Selections (First Team)
Martin Bibla, LG
Phillip Buchanon, CB
Freddie Capshaw, P
Ken Dorsey, QB
Joaquin Gonzalez, RT
Jerome McDougle, DE
Bryant McKinnie, LT
Clinton Portis, RB
Ed Reed, SS
Brett Romberg, C
Jeremy Shockey, TE
Todd Sievers, K
Jonathan Vilma, MLB

I think the offensive line would have made USC look silly. The defense would have made a key play or two to LIMIT the coaching. Special teams, edge Canes.

Vote - Canes

<+BOE> Scott, with Burfict's character concerns (whether legit or not) you think Pioli would draft him. :D
<+ScottWright> Why not. Baldwin does need a sparring partner...

Can't deny the Canadian connection on the Miami line with Haji-Rasouli & Romberg. Canucks love to hit and know how to block :D
