Yeah that's what I think. It's not the exact amount from this year. The slotting rules they put in place are dumb even though I love the early signing period since so many of the players were losing development time.

All logic says Appel still has to sign, but reports say he's not likely to. Gut feeling tells me he will, but only a few hours left to find out.

Right. But the league didn't target the Pirates like your post said. Appel slipped in the draft due to his money demands. I'm sure Boras made those demands quite clear. Pirates should have passed on him like other teams did if they weren't ready to pay him his quote.

They need to ******* give Appel his money, they won't get a better player in next year's horrid draft.

Of course they didn't all get together and say they must stop teams like the Pirates from ever getting above .500 or anything. But it's pretty clear who the rule hurts.
And the Pirates shouldnt have passed on him. He was the best player available. Who says they are not ready to pay his quote? It's this terrible rule by the MLB preventing them from meeting his price. There shouldn't be a penalty for giving a player what the team, agent, and player all think is the fair value. It's a bad rule.
Once again, in a league with no salary cap, why in the hell should rookie salaries be capped, effectively hurting small market teams that can only afford to build through the draft?
And before you come back with I'm just bitter he's not going to sign, I still think he might. And if he doesn't I won't be terribly mad, they'll be in a strong position to draft players next year, and they already have one of the top farm systems built.
It's a terrible rule. If they put a cap on the league then I'd be ok with it, much like football. You can't let inflated rookie demands take an ever increasing percentage of the cap. But since there's no cap in baseball, there shouldn't be one on the rookies.

Thats what he's banking on really. But with no other option but to sign next year I don't see how he won't be worried about getting low balled and having to accept it. Or getting injured. Or just having a bad year.
Crazy risk to go back. But if he thinks 3.8 isn't enough and he can make more, go for it. It's just garbage that the Pirates would be so heavily punished for giving him what almost everyone agrees he's worth.

Pirates have signed other players and now apparently only have 3.0 left to offer. So getting a deal done appears to be lost.
Appel is taking a huge risk here. If he wants more than the Pirates 3.8 it's pretty clear they would offer and more than the Astros would have offered, he's gonna have to hope he has a good enough year and stats healthy enough to go number 1 and no get low balled knowing he has no other options.
I don't get the logic, but if he thinks he can earn more by going back, good luck to him. I'd have taken the sure money, easily.

I don't hope he gets injured, but I hope he has a very average senior season and he doesn't come close to being in the situation to get 4 million again.

I guess the writing was on the wall when he turned down 6 million from his hometown team and refused to make a statement when he got drafted by the Pirates. Fugg him.

The worst possible outcome for the Pirates would have been over paying and losing a pick next year.
Stupid risk. Doubt it works out for him. I'll definitely bet he never tops the 6 mil he could have had from the Astros and I'm willing to bet he doesn't get anything significantly more than 3.8. Certainly not enough more to make it worth the risk of having a bad year or getting hurt.
Fugg him is right.
Let's get back to real things. Like the Pirates series win streak. Beat the Brewers in their house of horrors again.
