Teams will never learn.
Only prime Mariano Rivera was worth that money.

Great... There goes the use of my Papelbon jersey.
Kinda sad to see him go. Was my favorite player on the team until his antics got out of hand.

So I guess that means the Madson deal reported earlier never got completed.

Is there such a thing as non-prime Mo Rivera?

Twins reach deal with Jamey Carroll for 2 years, $7 million...
That said, I didn't expect anything less for Papelbon, considering last year's Soriano deal

I don't think any closer is worth that kind of money. It's the most overrated position in sports. If your team is going through a losing streak, a closer is completely irrelevant because very few teams use them in non-save opportunities.

Wow that Papelbon deal is crazy. I know his HR/9 is low but that FB% might yield a good amount of HR's in that park.

Should have just given Madson that 4/44 contract. Ah well, now the Phillies will only have two of the worst deals in baseball.

Yeah they should have. I guess it's good for the Mets but we're not going to contend until at least 2015 so it really doesn't matter.

Let's not go that far my friend. Any team that isn't in the AL East can turn it around quick enough.

Not when you have the Wilpons as owners. Our young SP quad will make their mark in 2013 and 2014.
I just read Barajas is the highest paid player on the Pirates at $4 million. That's just sad.

For Brodeur and Xio:
Quote:
Lynn Henning of the Detroit News reports that the Tigers have "strong interest" in Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes.
Add another team to the list, which includes no fewer than at least a half dozen that have interest in the talented Cuban. Cespedes, 26, is expected to command a deal in the $20-30 million range and probably will need little to no time in the minor leagues before being ready for a starting job in the outfield.

Paying Barajas $4 million is always preferable to $125 million over the next five years to a rapidly declining, bad defensive first baseman with a torn Achilles.

Carroll is boring, but a decent signing. Our middle infield positions are cursed though so he'll end up hitting .220/.290/.310.

Why pay JJ Hardy $7 million a year, when you can pay Jamey Carroll and Tsuyoshi Nishioka $6.5 million a year?

Or 7 million injury prone guy who can't field. I like Barajas over Doumit. I'll miss Doumit's bat, but he's never in the lineup for me to get excited over it.

Pirates are looking at Ramon Santiago for their SS vacancy. If it's not a lot of money, I'll take it. He plays good defense.

He plays good defense ... at second base. He's no stud at short.
Also, he's not an every day player. Enjoy.

He's below average at short, and he's really not good enough of a hitter to make up for it. He had a decent little run at the end of the season, but Ramon should not be a full time starter.

The SS market is ridiculously bad (as usual). You've got Reyes who should get 9 figures but comes with huge injury risk. Then there's Rollins who is regressing, getting old and will cost a lot. After those two there is really nothing else but league average or below. I guess Barmes would be the best remaining guy. Ughhh.

Makes Detroit's signing of Peralta (2 years/12 million) last offseason look brilliant.
