Bah...........Meso > Grandal so it's not much of a loss there, Edinson has issues to say the least, and Boxy is a reliever. It's a better deal than I thought for the Pads though.

Thanks a lot Reds. What, you couldn't throw in Joey Votto as well?

Getting Grandal in that trade is a good score, and I think they were saying Alonso was gonna play one of the corner outfield spots for the Reds this year, werent they? Either way hes an impact bat.

In 1990, two years after becoming the first player to hit 40 home-runs and steal 40 bases in the same season, all while batting .307, driving in 124 runs and scoring 120 himself, Jose Canseco signed a $23.5 million - 5 year contract, the largest ever for a baseball player at the time. Today the Colorado Rockies signed Micheal Cuddyer for 30 million over 3 years. Cuddyer has never batted over .284, never hit more than 33 HR's in a season, and his best R/RBI year was in 2006 with Minnesota, when he had 102 and 109 respectively.

Pretty much anything is better than average, runs, and RBIs. And no Jon Heyman, I don't use VORP whatsoever.

When they stop keeping score in that stat I'll stop using it.

Crazy trade. Im most upset about losing Boxberger.
Wont miss Alonso. Loved his bat but watching him play left....ugh.
Grandal will be blocked by Mesoraco.
Volquez...good riddance.
I like the move. It is a win now move.
We have Votto for 3 years. Trying to win with him.

Why not just use wins. That's what really matters. No, make that titles. I don't care about silly numbers when comparing people, show me the rings, *****.

That's just silly. It's nearly comparable to what the Tigers gave the Marlins for Cabrera and Dontrelle (just without 4 throw-in prospects).
|
Any deal for for Gio, IMO, would have to start with a Turner/Castellanos type of core. Preferably the hitter would be the higher rated player, but either works. From there, the A's should look to get at least two more prospects in the B- range--1more hitter and a reliever or lower value starter. To compensate for the quantity of players, I would expect the A's to throw in a major league reliever--anyone not named Bailey would be fine.
This is the type of package that should be expected for a young, cost-controlled lefty who is just beginning to tap into his potential and was an All-Star last year. Bailey should be held out of the Gio trade unless the other team wants to give up 3 top 50 prospects to go along with 3 more B-range prospects in a 6 or 7 prospect package.
I don't think Beane should require Smyly in a Gio-only trade is Castellanos and Turner are both involved.

Wow we gave up a lot to get Latos but I like that we went ahead and made a deal for a guy who could be the ace of our staff for the next four years or so.
I think the Pads will really like Yonder Alonso especially if he's going to be your everyday first baseman. He is the most patient hitter I have ever seen at such a young age and I suspect he'll thrive, even in that cavernous ballpark. Got a lot of potential in Grandal and Boxberger too and if Edinson Volquez can return to form even just a little bit he should do well in that park.
What are everyone's thoughts on Latos btw? I don't think I've ever actually seen him pitch but I hear good things. Do you think he benefited a lot from Petco or is he just that good? Will he be able to pitch in the launching pad they call GABP?

This will just never, ever happen. Gio isn't that good. The Tigers are NOT trading Turner and Castellanos for Gio.

I thought he implied Turner or Nicky C, not both, plus some B- type prospects. But I could be wrong.......either way, Gio is really not that good.

Oh. Well, the point I'm making is that all the reports said Beane demanded both of them. That's just not happening.

Alonso will probably play Left for the Pads unless Rizzo is good enough at other positions. Rizzo is a better hitter than Alonso, but they will want both of them in the lineup.
Latos is the real deal, never gotten great run support so he should do well with some better sticks in Cincy.

They probably trade Rizzo in my opinion. LH pull hitter that just gets killed due to PETCO.
Latos is really talented. Has had health issues though. Also known to be a bit of a douchebag.

I hope they do. Rizzo is one of my favorite prospects ever. It would suck to see him play in PETCO for his entire career.

I mean, he wont be in San Diego his entire career...he will leave the Padres for a good pay day eventually.
