He's got a ton of trade value and is close to ready for the big leagues but is blocked there. The more time he plays in Petco, the less valuable becomes.
If Alonso could play LF, the Reds wouldnt have traded him in the first place. There's no way either of them could play decent OF in Petco.

Rizzo might be a better hitter right now but I think Alonso could be something truly special in the long run. I haven't seen a Reds hitter like that at such a young age ever and I've probably seen at least 60-65% of their games over the past decade or so and been a fan my whole life. Reminds me of Votto in that respect except Joey was a bit older when he was brought up. Usually that type of patience and eye is something young hitters struggle mightily to ascertain. He's already got it and he's definitely got some power there too. Really small sample size seeing him last year but I was soo impressed with the number of pitches he was willing to take. Simply incredible IMO.

You are overrating Alonso so goddamn much. He might be an above average hitter, but he's certainly not going to be a "special" hitter.

Volquez in that park, with another year post-surgery, should be poised for a comeback.

I don't know about the World Series, but you gotta like their chances at the division. The Cardinals are still legit; but the Brewers are going to be hurting, the Cubs are rebuilding, and the Pirates are the Pirates.

I want to see the Pirates show some balls and go for it. If only they had some more excitement, whether it was a bid on Darvish or anything to help them build on their first half of last season. Its not like Pittsburgh fans won't show up. They just need a reason.

Loving this deal for the Reds. They gave up some good prospects but, with the exception of Boxberger, all of them were blocked.
Votto is ahead of Alonso at first, and Alonso is all types of awful in the outfield. Alsonso is also 24 years old and lacks significant upside at the plate. He'll be good, but not great offensively.
Grandal has big potential at the plate, but he sucks defensively and is blocked by the awesome Devin Mesoraco. He was never going to play for the Reds.
Volquez is ******* terrible. He has zero control and his stuff is nothing wonderful either. He was going to be a relief pitcher for the Reds.
Boxberger has potential, but he's still just a relief pitcher. Best case scenario, he's a good closer. That's not something that will keep me from acquiring a potential ace.
Though Latos has some question marks, he's already been successful and is really young. His stuff is good enough to be a No. 1 starter, and the Reds really needed to upgrade along the rotation.

Latos ERA will jump up to 4s since he doesn't get to pitch in Petco now, but still glad to get him out of the division. Volquez certainly benefits the most from this trade will put up solid to good numbers in SD just in time for a contract

Sigh, once again he is the exact same away from Petco that he is inside Petco. Petco did not really benefit him much at all.

Look at Latos's home-road splits. He's basically been just as good on the road. Add in the fact that he isn't a fly-ball pitcher, and it makes no difference.

You obviously didn't do a good job of making your point, or this wouldn't still be a topic of discussion.

I am guessing they did this for an upgrade over Gerrardo Parra, but Kubel? Dude can hit, but he can't field, he can't throw, and worst of all he can't stay healthy.

I would have just stuck with Parra. I don't like the Kubel move at all.
