Default The Sweet Life with Zack Martin

-Started three straight years with no injuries
-Two time team captain at Notre Dame
-Fluid as hell in both the run and passing game
-Versatile enough to play tackle and guard

It's hard not to love the pick. Have a look at the game film to see how he plays.

Rams tried to trade up for him.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post...down-on-o-line

Quote:
After using the No. 2 overall pick on Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson, the Rams were surprised to see a few of their favorite targets tumble down the board to their second pick at No. 13. Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald was ultimately too much value for the Rams to pass up but had he been gone, the Rams would have gone the way of San Francisco circa 2010 and doubled down on offensive linemen.

The target was Notre Dame's Zack Martin, a player the Rams had been eyeing as a possible pick for some time. Even after passing on Martin, though, the Rams almost made the boldest of moves to add him to the haul that already included Robinson and Donald.

“We actually made an effort just a few minutes ago to go back up to try to get Martin but we were unsuccessful,” Fisher said.

After the Rams took Donald, Chicago drafted Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller and Pittsburgh grabbed Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier. The Rams commenced conversations with Baltimore at No. 17 about moving up for Martin.

That would have meant a move from the second round at No. 44 overall and probably cost the Rams a boatload of picks or, perhaps, a first-round pick in 2015.

"It would’ve been pricey but worth it," Fisher said. "It was a good pick for the Cowboys.”

Another neat comment.

Zack Martin an Olin Kreutz-type leader

Quote:
IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys loved everything about Zack Martin, which is why they made him the 16th pick in the NFL draft's first round on Thursday.

The Notre Dame offensive lineman started 52 games, including 50 at left tackle. He will play guard for the Cowboys in 2014 with the possibility of moving to tackle in the future. He was a two-year captain. He was even the MVP of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.

ESPN’s Notre Dame blogger Matt Fortuna offers up this post about Martin:
Perhaps no greater compliment has been paid to Zack Martin than these words from Notre Dame offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, formerly of the Chicago Bears:

"The best leader I've ever been around is Olin Kreutz from the Bears, and Zack's in that category. Zack's in that conversation. Zack brings it every day."

Hiestand said that before Martin's senior season and pre-draft workouts, which have only strengthened his status among pro teams looking for strong play up front. "Sure thing" has been a phrased often used lately to describe Martin, and his college career reflects that: He won the Irish's top offensive lineman award four straight years. He was a two-time captain. He set the school record for starts, with 52 in a row. At 6-foot-4, 308 pounds, he could play inside, but NFL teams drafting him so high would probably be wise to play him at his natural position.

His synergy with fellow linemen — especially on combo blocks — was impressive throughout 2013, especially considering he was one of only two Irish linemen to start all 13 games. What's more impressive is the fact that his quarterback, the non-mobile Tommy Rees, was sacked just eight times in 2013. Or the fact that Notre Dame was the only team in 2013 to hold prized prospect Aaron Donald without a tackle for loss.

People around the program loved to talk about Martin's dependability, and how that belied just how good of a player he was. The past four months have allowed the rest of the football world to see that for themselves.
Olin Kreutz (Hawaii boy) is my freaking hero so if Martin is anything like him we indeed got ourselves a player.

What we have are 3 pro bowlers on our offensive line right now basically.
And Martin is the real deal, believe it. My favorite Olineman in the draft.

The #1 guard prospect plus a top 4 or 5 Tackle in this draft.

Analysis:

Four-year starter at left tackle. Two-year captain who projects inside at guard. Plays in a three point stance along with a two point preset stance. Gets a good two arm extension in pass protection. Cuts off the inside go. Good awareness on blitz pickups. Works to sustain and finish his blocks. Effective as a pass protector and run blocker. Knee bender who plays with flat feet. Plays with balance and body control. Can pivot, turn, and run. Effective use of hands to lock up the pass rusher’s breast plate. Concentrates and focuses on his job. Good reactions. Gets depth in pass protection. Smooth feet to mirror and slide. Smart and instinctive player who can sit down and anchor a bull rush. A four-for-one player. Ourlads' Scouting Services.

Martin plays really well with his hands establishing inside position on the defender. He is a SMART player able to get off original block and look for more. He changes directions really well for his size. Establishes a good base and reset. Shows great vision picking up delayed blitz'. Doesn't seem easily fooled by stunts and twists. He understands the importance of hands placement, is always inside. In the run game he pulls well, has good speed and vision. In the strait forward run game he turns into a mauler. Finishes the play. Is good at multiple pass blocking techniques, hits the bull rush with strength, moves the speed rush with quick feet and hands. Ehren Nockels, Ourlads' Draft Analyst

Fifth year senior that has been the top offensive lineman on the ND roster for a few years now. He has started every game of his career, mainly at left tackle. Because of his size and style of play, I think Martin will make the move to guard at the next level, where he projects to be a very good player. Mechanically, Martin is very sound and consistent with his form and approach. Excellent knee bender that shows flexibility from his ankles all the way up through his shoulders. Very good athlete in space that is balanced, maintaining power and strength. Martin has all the tools and skills you want in an offensive lineman. I think he’ll be a starter within a year or two, and a very good one at that. Expect to hear his name called as soon as the second round. Dave Syvertsen, Ourlads' Draft Analyst
DRAFT NOTES: Set school record with 50th consecutive start for Irish, has been named Notre Dame’s Offensive Lineman of Year four straight years
------------------------------------------------------------------------
That stuff about being a starter in a yr or two and their 2nd round projection
We know he starts from day one.

I like how this pick is sort of the revenge for the Donald pick. It's pretty ironic considering that Donald got held without a sack or tackle for loss against Notre Dame, and I can't find that full game on YouTube. I'm gonna miss the Punch and Pie War Wagon, but the Sweet Life isn't a bad consolation to have.

Punch and pie war wagon went on to st louis, but I like that they wanted him too. Our Martin pick also messed up miami, they were lovin' him and had to take James
Pryor also caused a ruckus, the cards moved, the eagles reached, pack settled for dix, those two caused quite a ruckus there when they went off the board.

Pretty sure Baltimore was interested in Martin too. The DC Ravens fans in the chatroom were.

Both of my ravens buddies were HIGHLY upset with us grabbing Martin.

One of whom is among my favorite people to talk sports with and is LOATHE to ever give the boys credit.

High praise :)

LL posted this in the main thread, so I just had to post it here.

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/10/zack...rookie-of-year

It's insane how good Martin is so early. Being next to Frederick helps, but the guy doesn't even look like a rookie at all. Same thing with Frederick too. The dude has only been around a year, and he's beasting along with the new guy.
