Default "Best Overall Prospect"

Well for the second time in four years the Lions have landed the "Best overall prospect in the draft" at the #2 position.

Calvin Johnson has obviously proven he was worthy of the tag, as soon as the Lions have a coherent overall offense he will explode (could be this year depending on the OL play).

Suh has a track record of recent DT busts to overcome but at this point he looks like a humongous stud.

What other recent years has there been a consensus "BOP" and how did they pan out?

2010: Suh
2009: Unclear - probably was no consensus BOP
2008: Jake Long or Chris Long? Jury's still out somewhat on both
2007: CJ - mentioned
2006: Probably was Reggie Bush - minor success

What other years and prospects are worth mentioning?

Stafford was a pretty clear number 1 last year.

How is the jury still out on Jake Long? The guys a pro bowler and a top 6 OT in the league.

Last year it was Crabtree. For me at least.

Dude was injured, had no workout #s, put up a diva show, and was still picked top 10.

I hate what the perception of Reggie Bush has become. You can look at stats or Pierre Thomas or whatever, but the bottom line is that you don't draft a guy so that he goes out and enjoys individual success. You draft players to build a team that can contend for a championship. Reggie Bush's presence on the Saints was one of many factors that helped that team win it all.

The pick of Bush helped the team win it's first Super Bowl. The #2 pick there was a MAJOR success.

Crabtree was not the best prospect, he was no physical specimen, he came from a spread offense, there were alot of question marks.

Im pretty sure as a prospect Mario Williams fit the bill of being a physical specimen and produced, he had great potential, it was just that reggie bush was one of the best college players ever.

Is the jury still out on Chris Long?

Hindsight being 20-20, he's not a top-20 pick imo.

The only two I see up for consideration for last year are Aaron Curry and Stafford, and I would give Stafford a decent advantage. I think the Lions have gotten the best player in 3 of the last 4 drafts (and got a horrible right tackle in the other).

I had Matthew Stafford rated #1 pretty comfortably last year. I'd agree with Brodeur that the Lions have nabbed the #1 overall prospect in 3 of the past 4 drafts.

Jake Long was easily 2008's best prospect.

2006 - Reggie Bush
2007 - Calvin Johnson
2008 - Jake Long
2009 - Matthew Stafford
2010 - Sam Bradford

- That's the top player on my boards those years. Suh may be the consensus top player to the fans but I'm not sure that was the case for most teams. I know Bradford was the top player on a few boards and I'd imagine that some teams (with certain schemes) had Gerald McCoy up there as well.

I wasn't even sure Long and Stafford were the best at their position much less the best in the class. I don't think either of those years had a consensus #1.

2010: Suh/I'm actually rooting for him and the Lions

2009: Aaron Curry/B.J. Raji: Too early to make judgments

2008: Jake Long/Glenn Dorsey: Long is a stud, wish Dorsey weren't in a 34.

2007: Calvin Johnson/Joe Thomas/LaRon Landry/Adrian Peterson/Patrick Willis. All 5 were elite can't miss prospects for their positions. Peterson, Willis, Thomas, and Megatron are all All pro level players. Landry was great his first year but has sucked since then. Moving to SS though could turn his career around.

2006: Reggie Bush/D'Brickashaw/VD: Bush is a bust based on where he was picked and the expectations. Still a pretty good football player. Brick is a pretty good LT but not all pro level overall. VD started off looking like a bust but now IMO is the top TE in the game.

2005: Braylon Edwards/Cedric Benson: Didn't have any of the QB's on my top 10 draft board. Braylon was my #1 overall prospect but he has been relatively disappointing and underachieving. I overlooked just how bad his inconsistent hands were. Benson has been all over the place up and down but is back up again, although he's a bust for the Bears.

2004: Gallery/Fitz/STRIP/KII: Gallery was a massive bust as a RT. During the process the closest I've heard analysts calling someone a sure fire hall of famer before he even stepped on the field. Has rejuvenated his career though by sliding in. Fitz is one of the top 2 wideouts in the game. Sean Taylor had some rough early experiences but in his final season was an absolute monster on a whole different level. KII has massively underachieved with his skills and athleticism. I was almost sure in Gibbs first draft he would take Winslow to be his revolutionized H-back.

2003: Charles Rogers/Andre Johnson/Dewayne Robertson: Can you guess which name doesn't belong in the group of epic busts?

2002: David Carr/Julius Peppers: Peppers has made a perennial pro bowl career, David Carr is David Carr.

2001: Michael Vick: Disappointment even at his height. At his height he was the most exciting player in the NFL but never was one of the top effective QB's in the league. David Terrell was my #3 overall prospect. Also was big on Koren Robinson and Dan Morgan.

2000: Courtney Brown/LaVar/Peter Warrick: 2 massive busts, LaVar was really good for a couple of years.

The Patriots could say the same things about Kevin Faulk (actually he helped them win four Super Bowls) and he doesn't have a $50 million dollar contract and he wasn't the 2nd overall pick, next coming of Gale Sayers.

Stafford was a far better prospect than Sanchez, there is no debate in that. And BJ Raji Strip, seriously?

I didn't have Eli in my top 5 prospects. I felt he just went #1 because of the position he plays. I thought that Gallery, Sean Taylor, K2, Fitz, Roy Williams, and maybe even Deangelo Hall were superior prospects.

2010 - Ndamukong Suh
2009 - Matt Stafford
2008 - Jake Long
2007 - Calvin Johnson
2006 - Mario Williams (I've been consistent on this since the combine of that year)
2005 - Demarcus Ware (many thought he would go top-5, he fell because of his school not because of his talent)
2004 - Sean Taylor
2003 - Andre Johnson
2002 - Julius Peppers
2001 - Michael Vick
2000 - Lavar Arrington

People were over evaluating Ngata too much and drinking the Bunkley cool aid because of the combine. Of course the Ravens end up scooping him up after other teams were dumb. Just like how Terrell Suggs, Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Todd Heap, and Michael Oher dropped to them. Hah I was so sure Dez would drop to them and we'd have another moment, but Dallas did a little steal on them.

of course 3 of my favorite players in the last 10 years are ravens...ngata, oher and rice...some of my favorite prospects ever and they are ravens. oher was my number one tackle last year and it wasnt even close, biggest victim of over analysis ive ever seen. so of course he falls into the ravens lap
