Please Help (Redshirt vs Grayshirt)
My little brother signed a scholarship to Louisiana-Monroe in February. He was supposed to start school in June and redshirt his first year of school. However, we found out yesterday that he has a torn ACL. Now the coaching staff is saying they think it would be best to grayshirt him this year and have him enroll in January. I'm not too familiar with the grayshirt process and everything that I've found so far is very vague in how it all works with the scholarship. What do you all know about grayshirting and how injuries affect scholarships? What would you recommend if it were your family going through it? And please share if you know of any other website or forum that could be helpful for me to visit and get some more information. I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible before I suggest what I think he should do. Thanks

Greyshirt isn't always a bad option if they stay true to their word. Its likely that he would start school in January and then redshirt the next season. Thats a year and a half of school in before he starts his 4 years of play. By the time he is a senior he could very well be on his way to his masters. Obviously its a little bit of a bummer he wont be able to rehab with their doctors for the fall, but that might be a sacrifice you make.

See...that's what I'm talking about. Do schools keep their word when it comes to greyshirts? That's something I'm trying to find out.

If your brother was going to a school like Alabama, Florida, or other big time schools, the answer is no. If they find a better player, they'll cut you loose. But at UL-Monroe, they are more likely to keep their word.

My high school teammate was a pretty big recruit at Oregon and he had to take the greyshirt route because of a shoulder injury. It worked out great for him, he has no regrets.

I think as far as knowing whether the school will stay true to their word is entirely dependent on the coach (obviously). Hopefully your brother got to know the staff well enough to know whether he can trust them on this.

Does your brother have any other options, anyway? His best shot is probably just to grayshirt and rehab to get back to full strength as quickly as possible.
